The Legend of Korra premiered on this day 6 years ago!
And like the cycle of the seasons, the cycle of the Avatar began anew…
Happy krew-niversary!!
ATLA & LOK OPENING SEQUENCE PARALLELS
Avatar The Last Airbender (February 21, 2005):
My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, a time of peace when the Avatar kept balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked.
Only the Avatar mastered all four elements. Only he could stop the ruthless firebenders. But when the world needed him most, he vanished.
A hundred years have passed and the Fire Nation is nearing victory in the war. Two years ago, my father and the men of my tribe journeyed to the Earth Kingdom to help fight against the Fire Nation, leaving me and my brother to look after our tribe. Some people believe that the Avatar was never reborn into the Air Nomads and that the cycle is broken, but I haven't lost hope. I still believe that somehow the Avatar will return to save the world.
THE LEGEND OF KORRA (April 14, 2012):
Earth... Fire... Air... Water. When I was a boy, my father, Avatar Aang, told me the story of how he and his friends heroically ended the Hundred Year War. Avatar Aang and Firelord Zuko transformed the Fire Nation colonies into the United Republic of Nations, a society where benders and non-benders from all over the world could live and thrive together in peace and harmony. They named the capital of this great land "Republic City". Avatar Aang accomplished many remarkable things in his life, but sadly his time in this world came to an end. And like the cycle of the seasons, the cycle of the Avatar began anew.
Happy 6th Anniversary, The Legend of Korra!
I’m happy to announce that I was able to design the cover for the upcoming Avatar Anthology!
Dark Horse announces new Avatar: The Last Airbender comics
Here is the slipcase and cover art I recently did for a new upcoming Blu-ray release of the complete Avatar: The Last Airbender series. They figured out a way to uprez the footage from the original masters. The Blu-ray will be available exclusively from Best Buy starting May 1st, then available nationally starting June 5th. IGN has some more info at this link:
http://www.ign.com/articles/2018/02/23/avatar-the-last-airbender-complete-series-coming-to-blu-ray-this-summer?watch
It was the 13th anniversary of the premiere earlier this week; the 15th anniversary of when Mike and I created the series is coming up this spring; and it’s the 10th anniversary of the finale later this year.
You can see some process images from these covers over at my new Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/bryankonietzko/
For the first time, Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Complete Series is going to be released on Blu-ray disc in full 1080p HD, coming May 1st, 2018.
This is really exciting news! A few months ago, Nickelodeon finally released ATLA in 1080p digitally, and not only that but it was a true higher definition render of the series than what we had before, not just an upscale. Now, we’ll be able to see that 1080p release in the best quality possible on Blu-ray, which offers much higher bitrate and less compression than digital.
The news comes from this Best Buy product catalog posting, just in time for the ten-year anniversary of the show’s end this July!
Avatar: The Last Airbender first premiered on this day 13 years ago!
Happy birthday Team Avatar, your present is ATLA on Blu-ray for the first time ever! 💎
So this is interesting: Nickelodeon just posted on Monday 12/4 that for the first time ever, all of ATLA has been re-released in full 1080p HD on iTunes. Obviously since it was created in 480p, this means this re-release is some kind of upscaled/remastered version, but this is the first official release of the show in HD ever. Earlier this year you might recall the fanmade project that did the same thing, remastering the series in 1080p. Eager to see for myself Nick’s take on it and if the difference in quality is noticeable.

The pair departed Riot Games to try something new
Aaron Ehasz, former head writer and co-executive producer for Avatar: The Last Airbender, has co-founded Wonderstorm (along with Justin Richmond, Uncharted director), a new videogame & expanded media studio. Giancarlo Volpe, former Avatar: The Last Airbender director, has joined him.
can waterbenders bend oil can earthbenders bend glass can airbenders bend sound can firebenders bend mixtapes
Yes, waterbenders can bend any water based material, as shown when Katara bends ink (Book 3, Chapter 16, “The Southern Raiders”) and soup (Book 3, Chapter 8, “The Runaway”). so as long as the oil is water based (baby oil, cooking oil, etc) then yes. If you’re talking about oil like for a car, then no, they can’t, because it isn’t water based.
Glass is made of sand and earthbenders can bend sand (Book 2, Chapter 10, “The Library”) and furthermore earthbenders can bend the earth particles in metal (Book 2, Chapter 19, “The Guru”) so it stands to reason that they can bend the sand particles in glass. There is a question of whether or not they can still bend it because it is a very purified form of earth and another pure form of earth, platinum, is unbendable (LOK Book 1, Chapter 7, “The Aftermath”). However, when the sand is turned into glass it becomes crystalline (sand is mostly quartz particles after all) and we know earth benders can bend crystals (Book 1 Chapter 5 “The King of Omashu” when Bumi bends the creeping crystal).
Yes, airbenders can bend sound. This is shown when Aang bends sound by using his Appa whistle and extends the range of the sound (Book 2, Chapter 15, “Tales of Ba Sing Se”).
Firebenders can bend heat (Book 3, Chapter 6, “The Avatar and the Firelord”) which leads me to believe that they can not only bend fire mixtapes but can also control how fire a mixtape is by making it hotter.
Damn, pohlarbearpants did the research
I’m sure they were referring to her parenting skills.
This snide little assertion that Ursa is abusive is in the Ursa tag. Because that’s where character hate goes, of course! I’d like to remind everybody that the old website always had massive inaccuracies and inconsistencies with the show’s canon as well as the newer comics canon.
Did the content for the site even come from any of the show writers?
No it did not, and neither did the Avatar Extras, which is why both contradict what the writers and show creators have said, and the material released. Heck, the website even had the wrong map up for a while, if I remember correctly.
I thought Avatar Extras was by Joshua Hamilton?
And Katie Mattila, however they regularly get canon, including previously aired canon wrong and don’t appear to have had oversight from the show creators
One of my favorite things they got wrong in the Avatar Extras was calling Zuko’s ship’s catapult a trebuchet. This is a really minor error, but I’m currently transcribing the DVD commentaries, and in the 1.19 commentary, Mike, Bryan, and Aaron talk about how they deliberately gave Zuko a catapult in contrast to the trebuchets on the newer Fire Nation ships, to show how out of date and substandard Zuko’s equipment was. The amount of thought they put into that minor detail is staggering.
Avatar: The Last Airbender first premiered 12 years ago!
The Boy in the Iceberg and The Avatar Returns kicked off the Avatar franchise on this day 12 years ago: February 21st, 2005. Coincidentally, that’s the same age Aang was– if you ignore the hundred years in the iceberg ;)

ATLA REMASTERING PROJECT IS DONE!
Avatar Remastering Project
Hey guys! Exciting news–the fan-run Avatar Remastering Project is getting closer to completion everyday! This project is upscaling and remastering every single episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender in beautiful HD (1080p vs the original 480p, or 1440x1080 vs 720x480).
This means, for the first time ever, you’ll be able to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender in HD!
Additionally, the interlacing and haloing (glowy white borders around black outlines) have been removed.
The latest update was November 27, 2016 (2 days ago):
We’ve finished upscaling all 61 episodes. This unarguably took the most amount of time (400+ hours) Right now we have to look for visual errors in every episode and correct those scenes. Not sure how long that’s gonna take. After we’re done fixing everything, we’re ready to start uploading.
I’m not affiliated with this project, but I am super excited to be able to watch and edit Avatar in HD for the first time ever! The dedication of the Avatar fandom never ceases to amaze me, and the fact that a fanmade project like this is in the works more than 10 years after the show’s premiere is a real testament to the quality of ATLA.

NICK ANIMATION PODCAST
EPISODE #1: BRYAN KONIETZKO AND MICHAEL DANTE DIMARTINO
Bryan likes to talk. A lot. Not Mike. Luckily for the rest of us, they both like to make cartoons in the exact same way. In the debut episode of the Nickelodeon Animation Podcast, host Hector Navarro talks to the geniuses and best friends behind two of the most awesome cartoons in TV history - Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

Thanks to Mike and Bryan for joining us!
BUSTED. I do talk a lot. We had a great time doing this podcast with Hector, who asked some interesting questions—which is hard to do, considering how much we have talked about this stuff—and that’s coming from a guy who talks a lot! Hope you enjoy.
