So this is a random semi-unrelated topic, but you mentioned a history degree when talking about the sun warriors, but this kinda makes me want to ask another question about the early cultures.

What do the air nomads mainly eat? Like I know that in the avatar wan episodes they were shown eating fruit but a person can’t survive off just fruit, so do they have like beans/lentils? Maybe things like tofu?

In my interpretation within Hanami, the Air Nomads began agricultural development after they left the Lion Turtles—so they absolutely have vegetables, fruits, and are beginning to create various dishes and cooking for themselves.

I like to think they even have bread and rice and other things to eat :)

Hey just wanted to ask something regarding time in Avatar Hanami's time-line. You guys have made the Sun Warriors a thing in your series which is cool en all, but doesn't it feel a little too soon for them to already exist? I ask, partly, because we basically never saw them be anywhere close to a thing when Wan was still alive, and personally I think they would only begin to exist as a group after decades, if not a little more than a century, of small fire people village to village in-fighting. I'd venture that they'd begin to exist after like the 3rd or 4th Avatar since, to my admittedly limited knowledge, it takes a while for a culture like that to exist.

Still cool to see them here tho, just thought I'd ought to ask. Can't wait to see more from you guys.

No, it’s not too soon. Not only are the Sun Warriors said to be one of the earliest civilizations in Avatar, they’re also the first firebenders (to learn from the dragons).

As an Indigenous person, and the Sun Warriors being based on multiple Indigenous groups—we are some of the first people to ever exist within many nations. I wanted the same to hold true to the Sun Warriors. Avatar’s lore got very askew in the Legend of Korra regarding the origin of the nations—and personally, in real history—Indigenous people have lived and existed for thousands of years.

I also have a history degree and I’ve studied ancient civilizations—specifically Indigenous history. So saying it’s “too early” for something is not a plausible explanation because people exist and thrived for thousands of years, even to now like ruins in Mesopotamia or ancient China—so no, it’s not too early.

Plus, the real history of human civilizations began around 10,000 years ago. It fits the timeline for not only our real history but also avatar history.

What will be Hanami easiest and most difficult element to master? By "difficult" I don't just mean learning how to control the element but also if there'll be any mental obstacles she'll have to overcome, like how Aang had to overcome his fear of firebending?

This is going to sound very contradictory, but her hardest element to master is air—her birth element.

I know that sounds weird but HEAR ME OUT! Hanami is raised in a somewhat rigid and structured tribe. It's not saying all Air Nomads at this time are like this, but this is very, very early on in the Avatar timeline, so many Air Nomads are searching and learning the different ways of connecting to the world spiritually, which will transform into the culture we see in Aang and Korra's lifetimes.

All societies/groups/communities start somewhere, their roots have to grow to become what we know of it down the line. So Hanami's tribe/community is exploring more of the detachment/structural side of spirituality and enlightenment, like kind of what we see with the Air Nomad council in the Southern Air Temple during Aang's lifetime.

Again though, because of this structure Hanami has grown up with, it doesn't allow her early on to realize that air is the element of freedom. Hanami is extremely hard on herself, especially when it comes to her place in her tribe and her bending. So, personally, I think her relationship with her birth element is a really great arc we get to explore, since it seems most Avatars that come long after her are comfortable in their element (pun intended).

We saw how Wan learned about the element of fire, so I think it was a great arc we carry into Hanami as she discovers the true aspects of the element of air.

is avatar: new beginnings more like legend of korra in that it mostly explores self contained stories for each book or is it more like the last airbender in that it is about one grand story that each books builds upon?

I like to think it's a bit of both? We have several overarching plots that extend throughout the series in a build up, but each book has its own plotlines and story arcs that tie into the main story.

I lean more toward saying it's more like AtLA, but there are elements we incorporated that is reminiscent of Korra as well!

I mean... Hanami is literally the Avatar after Wan, so it'd be a crime if Vaatu isn't mentioned.

So found out that Ai Guo and other relatives of main characters got updates based on your art updates recently. Any turn around art of them?

We keep most of our concept art to our group for the time being. Especially of characters like Aiguo and a few other characters who do not appear until later on in the story. Mostly because we are changing/updating a lot of Book 2 and Book 3 at the moment, so it's better to not post them until we know for a fact that the character's designs are solidified.

Plus... most of the turnaround designs are rough sketches at the moment.

How easy/hard is it to anger hanami?

It's... actually pretty easy. She's got a fairly short temper, believe it or not. I mean... she's got an Aries Rising and Mars so...

anon's other question: is there a discord channel for the project??

There's a team discord channel, we do not have one open to fans. I know a few projects had attempted to do that in the past, and it got very chaotic very quickly, so we just keep our team one.

Also, to answer your second question: the Swamp Tribes are founded after the Southern Water Tribe is, or around that time, and it is canon that the Northern Tribe was the first one to be formed. Hanami's era is far too soon for the Swamp Tribes to develop.

As for the Sandbenders, they're out there! The Sand Tribes do exist during Hanami's time, but we don't have enough time or story space to fit in every single culture that appeared in the shows. We reference them if we can, but the route Hanami's story goes introduces new cultures that we made to bring in more nuance and diversity.

We also have a very specific way of travel that Hanami takes during our comic, so it's hard to make plot adjustments to fit in every single culture while we try to focus on the ones we already have established for her story.

if your characters had voices, what would they be??

(please pick native ppl only! representation matters!!)

I've done this off and on in the past, but I have a list for you! And most definitely, I make sure I source the voices and their ethnic backgrounds accordingly if I can! As an Indigenous person myself, I like to find proper representation for our characters!

Hanami - Brianne Tju: She has a very young and energetic voice that I think can portray the different nuances of Hanami's character!

Kenai - Lane Factor (Reservation Dogs): He has a very steady and calming voice that I picture Kenai having, though I think it'd be fun to see how he could bring out that nervousness to the character as well.

Nekhii - Lance Lim: I'll be honest, Nekhii's voice is a little tricky to match up to how I think he sounds, but Lance had the closest voice that has that hint of youth but is deep enough to fit Nekhii's calm/level-headed side.

Da Xia - Terry Hu: Terry is a fantastic actor and they really fit the energy and confidence I imagine Da to have. They both have that embrace of individuality and speak a lot for non-binary people.

Homura - Erana James: Erana is a Māori actress and she has that very deep and somewhat monotone voice I envision Homura to have. Homura is not a hot-head as many fans think of her to be, but she's actually very quiet and has a deeper somewhat monotoned voice.

Nukilik - D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai: D'Pharaoh was the first person who popped into my head for Nukilik. I don't know if it's a vibe or what, but he just has that slow and steady voice I think Nukilik has.

Yes, we are still going. I have made a few updates to the Instagram and here off and on.

I need to put emphasis on the fact that we are adults and we have lives outside of the comic. I can only speak for myself, but I know I have had to move states on top of resettling in a place I'm not super familiar with and have to reestablish my life presently. I know a couple of our team members are also taking personal breaks for mental health and life reasons.

I also want to put emphasis on the fact that just because one project is no longer running, that does not speak for other projects. I know we've been very slow the last 8 months here, but life has been increasingly hard (our team's age range is from mid twenties to early thirties). We have real lives.

If the project were to ever be stopped or "shut down" I would post about it. If there's no post, there's no shut down.
