it’s the only voice she hears : the one calls & screams. it laughs. it takes over logic & reason ; it takes away her voice, her canary cry. she says to stop. they don’t ( i have nothing ). their voice lies & says that she’s worthless & unloved, so she stops. she quits & wonders how bad it could be to just … stop. to give in & never again breathe. it’s been twenty - three days since then, curled up on her bed with the duvet over her head & curtains drawn & the drone of the shower water running. she has no voice, only the scribbled notebooks & scratched - up napkins of words failed. but clint texts her today & it dawns on her that he doesn’t know. he knows about her absence of voice, but he doesn’t know. she stares at the text for a long time. 10AM coffee at starbucks. she considers texting him back that she’s sick ( she is ), but instead, her fingers type that she will meet him.
she sits in the furthest corner of the coffee shoppe & without a cup of her favourite : caramel frappuccino. it’s too hard to talk to people. she has no voice & it’s a man at the cash register. he looks like them ― the ones that took her cry. so she keeps her head down & opens candy crush on her phone & waits for clint. hurry.

❛ hey ! there she is ... sorry i’m late, darling. ❜ almost frantically he approaches her to take a seat. as he slings the strap of his worn messenger bag off his shoulder, his hair is caught and ruffled like feathers fitting. this is as put together as he can be at this time of day. when duty calls, he answers, but that doesn’t make it any easier to pull himself out of bed. ❛ got caught up in some stuff. hope i didn’t keep you waiting too long. ❜ it’s strange to talk knowing you won’t get an answer. but he can fix this. he can help. as much as he's able to, at least. it may not be much, but it’s better than nothing. ❛ you want coffee ? i’ll get us some coffee, okay ? it’s on me. ❜ a pause out of habit as he waits for her to speak. before he can make even more of a fool of himself he grabs the pen and notepad he’s brought along with him from his bag and pushes them across the table. ❛ what’s your order ? ❜
