Introduction

Sebmark has slowly made its way into my life and completely captivated me, becoming my favourite ship at the moment. Their story and dynamic is so interesting but not so personal like Brocedes or Lestappen. They weren't childhood anything, they were just two guys whose rivalry was kind of heated. (pun not intended)

DISCLAIMER: This is my opinion only, I'm not claiming anything happened, this is just the rpf interpretation of Sebmark and what I like about them. I also didn't read Mark Webber's book and don't plan on doing that, so I'm not knowledgeable about anything written in there.

I have a lot of thoughts on why I like this ship and I am very excited to share them with you!

Colour: Dark Redbull Blue

I feel like this is pretty self explanatory. The redbull colour pallette is pretty amazing honestly, I really enjoy their older merch with the big logos, that Sebastian Vettel sweater and beanie especially. (Also the white T-shirt with the grey lines and the logo on one shoulder - so fucking good!!!). I feel like they have a pretty complimentary look to eachother too. Like Seb and Mark were always dressed in Redbull stuff but there are a lot of pictures of them wearing different merch that compliments eachother nicely. Also their aesthetic is very complimentary to my eye, dark hair, tall, serious vs blonde, shorter and sunshine. (this is superficially ofc their dynamic is much more interesting to me.) Imo best looking duo on the grid aesthetically, they match but they are different enough in a way that is still matching (they are like cartoon character design to me). Crucially, the predominant colour here is the dark blue of that era of Redbull.

Song I associate them with

I don't actually have a Sebmark song yet, but a special mention, I've seen an edit on tiktok where they are edited to S&M by Rihanna as a pun because their names start with S and M. That was the best thing I've ever seen...the mind you need to think about this 10/10.

Top 3 iconic moments that come to mind

Yes, Multi 21 and Silverstone 2010 and Turkey 2010 and many more, but I want to highlight some other moments that I am fond of.

Sebastian Vettel driving into the back of Mark Webber's car while he was feeling sick and throwing up in his helmet. 10/10 no notes, story of Sebmark right there.

Jumping in the pool together after Mnaco 2012 - Mark doing a flip and then dragging Seb down with him after (If I'm not mistaken there is a video of them taking a bath in the lake? in Canada circa 2010? which is also pretty funny, because it's not a media thing, they just seem to be taking a dip together and talking, probably cooling down after the race? Maybe I'm crazy but tell me if you've also seen the video and know the context)

All the pictures of them doing stuff together, there are at least two different pictures of them looking incredibly drunk at concerts that I've seen and really appreciate. Idk what kind of forced bonding time Redbull was forcing them to do and i don't think it was working but they have a lot of good pictures together.

The Dynamic

Their dynamic is the definition of love-hate relationship. I feel like it probably went a bit beyond being mad at your coworker in real life, I feel like there is a really personal side that you have to put on the table when you are a racing driver and that's why I think they probably had something that went beyond just being normal coworkers (in the sense that they got under eachother's skin a lot more than normal people idk). The constant back and forth, Mark being sidelined and pushing this narrative of being the second driver (he was tho and he cursed that seat forever) while literally being the nr 2 car is so funny for him. And the timing of him basically being by Seb's side while he won his 4 championships and then retiring and Seb not winning anymore is kind of funny as well.

The constant fighting, as seen on broadcast multiple times, while seeming fond of eachother in a non racing context opens the door to so much nuance to explore in fanfiction. Plus, their personalities: Seb is cheerful but ambitious and arrogant while Mark is easily annoyed, dramatic and kind of backstabbing dare I say, while Seb actually seemed to offer him some trust and respect as his teammate (until Multi 22). This dynamic is peak in fanfiction, they are so toxic and obsessed with eachother and I love to read this back and forth while they are being an unreliable narrator to their own experiences because they refuse to aknowledge whatever they are feeling (hate or love or both). I understand that person who is writing the decade long ongoing fanfic about them, I really do, because while we don't really know how their relationship actually was, they do provide a lot of things to go off of, big moments like Silverstone 2010 which were very discussed and small moments where they seem to have fun and joke around (like that tourists in Singapore video). They are just rude to eachother multiple times, which makes for great TV.

Definitely my favourite teammate pairing of all time. They are both iconic, they were both very good in those Adrian Newey rocketships on track and dare I say the most iconic Redbull duo of all time. Even their names are matching, "Vettel and Webber" are you kidding me?

Favourite Tropes

I honestly just love to read different interpretations of their relationship, so "character study" would be the genre of fics I enjoy the most for this pairing. The smut in the Sebmark tag is also excellent, I like the fics that don't fall into the stereotype of strong manly man and blonde german twink and instead actually write the smut with their personalities in mind (the vibes should be rancid and horrible with these two ALWAYS) + bonus i like it when Jenson Button is involved but it's painfully obvious that they just have stuff to deal with about eachother and he's just kind of there 10/10 love it, once again the vibes should be offputting with Sebmark because everything about them is weird!! I didn't even mention the age gap this whole time and that just adds an extra layer of nuance to it.

Conclusion

You should give Sebmark a try if you have not already, it's so much more interesting than it first appears to be. And I love it, it has made it's way into my top F1 ships of all time. There is much to say about them and a lot of different interpretations about their relationship. They are a different brand of toxic than Brocedes.

what do i have TO DO to get more people into the sebmark hype train?!?!?! istg they are EVERYTHING!!

not only we have sebastian vettel winning the 2010 title after not leading it at ANY GIVEN POINT, but he also wins it against his own teammate, who had been in red bull for years at that point. then, he keeps on winning and winning and winning NON FUCKING STOP while webber has to deal with the fact that red bull will never prioritize him.

imagine being mark webber and seeing this german twink who races like the devil possessed him walk into your team, win a grand prix with the car before you can, get updates taken off YOUR car when HE crashes while YOU are leading the championship, and have your entire team seemingly supporting HIM instead of you? (iconic "not bad for a number 2 driver" line comes from there btw, after mark manages to win the race WITHOUT the updates on the car)

all of that without mentioning the 2010 turkish GP (and the "fuck you, im going home" quote from vettel) and, obvi, malaysia 2013 ("multi 21 seb" AND "i dont apologize for winning" r u kidding ME?!?!), both times where shit absolutely hits the fan.

the multi 21 incident is so iconic that its STILL quoted TIL THIS DAY (*cough cough* landoscar cool down room) by the drivers themselves. if brocedes was a friendship falling apart, sebmark was literally WAR inside a team.

there are two points in time where the two are barely capable of looking at each other, while the rest of the years are held with a CLEAR tension that simply never snaps (until 2013 that is). before the 2010 fiasco, tho, they are buying the SAME CAR in different colors, having fun with each other in monaco and having some insane photos taken of them (holding hands on a podium HELLO?!)

then, mark leaves. he is so done with red bull and vettel that he (supposedly) gets an offer from Ferrari and STILL decides to just go to WEC.

and never AGAIN does vettel manages to win a championship.

there are an INFINITE amount of lore connecting these two and I could literally go on for HOURS.

sebmark offers us literally EVERYTHING. we have the whole "i hate you" thing that gets mixed up with jealousy and envy. we have the angst and the constant fights. we have red bull taking sides and making mark's life miserable. we have the wild age gap. we have sebastian vettel at his ABSOLUTE peak of brattiness. we have mark webber, injured, pretending to be okay (2010 im pretty sure) because he already knows red bull just needs ONE reason not to back him in the championship. we have PERFECT tension in the podiums.

they are giving "toxic, can't live without u" relationship and i am here for it. like WDYM vettel NEVER WINS A TITLE AGAIN AFTER MARK LEAVES?!?!?! its fucking insane.

please, all the gax lovers, I KNOW yall would eat sebmark up. TRUST ME. they also have all the toxic vibes, mark being the more centered one while sebastian is just there for the chaos (webber always somehow losing his shit when it comes to HIM and ONLY him), the envy for what the other has conquered, the tension, the media aspect of it (bad mouthing each other publicly), the rumors surrounding them both all the time, the preference from the team principal (horner always loved seb, and we all know toto has it bad for max), the pushing each other out of the track.

please PLEASE PLEASE!! i need more people thinking, talking, reading and writing about them

landoscar - taller, australian, calmer/awkward x smaller, european, loud/crazy : teammates, the austrailain led the driver championship the longest only to end up third to their european teammate with a previous word champ in second

BUT sebmark is literally SO MUCH MORE TOXIC them both of these ships, THEY HAVE AN AGE GAP, seb was a MENCE to mark, but some how they were good at some points and then fighting at others????
