If you want to see how someone really feels about women, have them play Monster Hunter World and see how they react to the Handler.
That sounds like a joke but I’m dead serious. It’s a bit of a tell about how they feel about a woman not being “conventionally attractive” (which is horse shit but okay), and how they feel about them not being perfect (screwing up from time to time).
Personally, I adore the Handler. You can really tell she’s fuckin ecstatic to be doing what she does, and literally has only the best intentions for you. She usually runs into things head first and sets up a conflict with a new monster you’ll have to take out either later on a different quest or in that same one. She’s easily excitable and adorable, and I think it’s fantastic that the Handler can get her own clothes through DLC.
Now, let’s talk about how I normally see her portrayed in various MH Rant videos/thumbnails: being injured. I’ve seen multiple video thumbnails with titles like “Why the Handler sucks” or “The Handler is the worst part of MHW” and they more often than not have a thumbnail of her being physically hurt.
So, really it’s just par for the course for “Gamers” being introduced to a female character that isn’t the most perfect, beautiful bundle of tits that isn’t just a background character as far as I’m concerned.
Speaking from personal experience now, I was playing with… eh, we’ll call him an acquaintance. While playing and fuckin around in Astera, just making sure all my shits upgraded and things of that nature, I mentioned something about the Handler. I don’t even remember what, I just know I brought her up, and not even a second later he’s already called her a “stupid cunt bitch” and is continuing on about it. The whole time I’m mostly just frozen, not even touching the controller anymore, wondering where this shit is coming from. After he’s done saying she’s useless and an idiot and so on, I mention that my guild card’s message is “If you make fun of the Handler, I’ll be forced to tear out your entire spine.” Even after I say that and tell him that the Handler is just quirky and is used to further the plot in most cases, he launches into another tangent as if I hadn’t said anything, even trying to get me to change my mind.
Another instance of me and a different ‘acquaintance’ ran along the same exact lines, calling her names, saying she’s useless (even though it literally tells you to your face that she’s the one who gathers all your quests and rifles through all the bullshit so you don’t have to) and just generally being pretty horrible about it.
All about a character who’s just a ball of fuckin sunshine who couldn’t be happier to be your friend in the New World.
I just really don’t understand the pure vitriol some people who throw at the Handler. She’s just your friend and basically your Secretary who gets excited about food and monsters in general. Not to mention the fact that I’ve seen mods that “”””improve”””” the Handler by making her more attractive, but honestly that happens with every game with a woman in it (sadly).
I’ve just made it a bit of a life lesson to ask how dudes feel about the Handler and characters like her from now on. I generally don’t feel welcome talking to people who say she should die, purely because she just fucking exists.
