The Tantrum

My two-year old son threw a full-blown tantrum tonight. He kicked, he punched, he cried…. and cried… and cried… and annoyed me.. and tried me…and just kicked me straight in my mommy balls full of guilt. I knew why he was acting this way. A little man full of big feelings. Tired. Confused. Wanting. He needed this outburst. It’s what his little body and mind knew to do to deal with his frustrations. I got it but why did I find myself blaming myself for him acting this way? Like it was my fault when it isn’t. Because, really, It’s not a fault to have tantrum. It’s not a fault to set down rules, limits, or boundaries but I just felt that way. Like it’s bad and that makes me bad. This feeling, I realize, is what makes a ton of parents feel like failures. I have to remind myself that this parent-child relationship will constantly present battles between the mind and heart which also cements this one-of-a-kind special bond. There is no “way-you-should-do-it” Just “how-you’re-going-to-do-it” See, the crazy thing is that I know this child of mine is already a great little boy and I know I am giving myself a hard time for this one trying time. In short, parenting is hard and regardless of what you choose to do, you’re doing a great job just by trying. 👍🏼
