He rocked in his chair for a moment, then asked, “Has anyone been kind and tender to you, Adam?”
Adam choked, a sob escaping his shaking breath. He shook his head slowly. “I don’t think so,” he said. Then, considering it, he added, “I don’t let them.” He shut his eyes for a moment, biting his cheek and sitting in silence. Leo watched him from a distance and allowed the silence to stretch on until he spoke again. When he did he looked suddenly up into Leo’s eyes, and his face glowed with such softness, such passion, a look which was so foreign he hardly seemed the same man as before. “I’m not like you. I wish I was. But I’m not. I don’t know if it’s in me… or if it’s what happened to me… But I can’t find the good thing that you found. And I wish I could.”
