How to Write Dialogue for (most) Dream SMP Characters
A few months ago, I remembered seeing a lot of posts giving advice on how to write dialogue for DSMP Characters. And while those posts contained numerous helpful pointers, overall, they fall just short of capturing what it means to write in a character’s Voice.
Unique character Voices, while tricky to get right, are usually achieved by giving each character a distinct set of words to say, in a manner that distinguishes them from the rest of the cast.
With this in mind, I’ve spent the past few days combing through almost Thirty Hours of VOD footage to collect nearly all of the unique words, phrases, and speaking habits of every major and minor character on the Dream SMP (involved in 2+ story arcs.)
Before Reading:
Sentence-Starters are single words or phrases which begin a sentence. (ie. “Y’know, maybe you should try something different.”)
Sentence Paddings are reoccurring words added to the middle of sentences. (ie. “It’s like he just can’t cry.”)
Sentence Endings are single words or phrases which end a sentence. (ie. “There’s no need to fight, I hope.”)
All three of these types can be combined with one another to create more natural-sounding sentences. For instance, if a character has the two Sentence-Starters “Okay” and “So,” they can be used like this; “Okay, so, I’m a bit worried.”
(Note: When certain traits or phrases aren’t obvious with how they should be applied to dialogue, an (ie.) will be added below to illustrate them.)
Wilbur
General Traits:
Repeats himself for emphasis. Sometimes these repetitions will add additional information. More often, this repetition is focused around a specific word with the circumstance of the sentence being changed each time.
ie. “I’m living in an eternal limbo again. I’ve been through limbo, I’m out of limbo, and socially, I’m still in this limbo.”
Highly eloquent in language, bordering on poetic.
Highly introspective; significantly less so after Eret’s betrayal and onward.
Occasionally makes literary analogies and references, sometimes breaking the Fourth Wall to do so.
Curses semi-frequently. Wilbur is the only known character to use the word “cunt,” although rare.
Common Go-To Swears - Fuck, Shit, Prick, Bastard, Hell, Ass (Including all variations and combinations.)
Tends to hum when he thinks to himself.
Stutters most often when offended, shocked, or surprised.
Generally addresses characters semi-formally, often by title or role.
Often slips into long-form monologues when self-reflecting.
Usually defaults to being the head of a conversation; introducing, managing, and elaborating on topics throughout, especially when speaking to three or more people.
Circumstantial Phrases:
You and I, we’re ━ (To connect positively with someone.)
ie. “You and I, we’re used to seeing the good in people.”
I wanna pick your brain / Can I pick your brain? (To ask about someone else.)
Don’t say that, I’ll cry (Affectionate banter, only to Tommy.)
I’m afraid ━ (When hopeless or delivering bad news.)
ie. “I’m afraid there’s no getting out of this now.”
There’s no reason to ━ / There’s no reason for ━ / There’s no need for ━ (When being threatened or breaking up a fight.)
ie. “There’s no need for violence, gentlemen.”

Good art means nothing to me. Good lighting also means nothing to me
I love this text post so I drew it
Let’s fix the mood here’s the art dump my pathfinder party only gets when I finish the rest of the art I want to dump
My observation on asexuality is it’s a minority within the queer umbrella and therefore even your lgbtq peers will regularly find ways to make strange comments, even if they don’t know you belong to those minorities
I think the thing I hate allos doing the most is assuming aspec people have no interest in talking about sex and then actively avoiding the topic with us. Hand in hand with the infantilization in such a performative way. Like they know they’re not doing us favors by assuming right?
I <3 my extremely killable friend Hirose Akio!!!
qifrey!
I get to travel this summer watch me pay $10 for the funniest bit. Expect an update if i go through with jt
I think one of the most dangerous assumptions a creator can make is that an understanding of or friendships with people in minority groups leads to an ability to write them. Noooooo… diverse writing is a completely different skill…. Granted it is not a particularly hard skill do some basic research and listen to the people around you but you can always tell when someone was like ‘well I have trans friends! I know how to portray this character respectfully’
I've never read Homestuck but there's a type of media that I call "a Homestuck" and I think it's a useful categorization. The main criteria are:
long enough that the time investment is a serious barrier to entry
irrevocably changes your personality
brings something genuinely unique to the table. there is no real substitute for reading/playing/watching it in its entirety
Fate/Stay Night is a Homestuck. Worm is a Homestuck. When They Cry is a Homestuck.
Undertale has cultural impact similar to a Homestuck at first glance, but the fact that it's a pretty short and accessible game means that you don't get the particular mix of sunk cost fallacy and an intimate experience with a piece of media that results in you needing to connect with others who have already put in the time investment. You can buy your friends Undertale and expect them to play it if they're not too busy; telling a friend to read Homestuck is giving them a quest that, if accepted, will spark an odyssey. to read someone's Homestuck is an act of love without true equivalent.
JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, especially if you decide to get up to date with the Manga.
When did I start drawing myself as a bitchy Angel and how closely does it correlate with when I stopped being a doormat. The answer is probably hidden in a high school sketchbook
I think ever author has some pitfall that informs you of heir background. Since we’re on Tumblr I raise you Tumblr prose.
My pitfall is in high school I very obviously only read manga for a solid year and it reads in every script I wrote at that time…
The most lovely compliment which I frequently get on my writing (largely for my Pathfinder party rn) is that I have done a good job of characterizing everyone (one of my friends was kind enough I say the way I wrote his character was right out of something he'd write!! Hooray!) and I can't help but feel no matter if it's for PC, NPC or my own characters that I'm able to do that because I've absorbed everyone's documents lmao I never forget a fun fact and it shows
It’s genuinely been a productive 24 hours I think somehow all my friends having Tomodachi life and being busy is somehow helping me get my writing done
