A Vision of Fire is a paranormal romance fantasy novel, following two unlikely heroes as they fight against fate. When vampire Danny sleeps with a werewolf to spite the ancient vampire order and homophobes everywhere, they accidentally reveal paranormals to the human public and trigger a prophet’s vision of the future. Unless they can stop it, humans and supernaturals will start a war that will end in apocalypse. Only the rarest creature in the world, the phoenix, may be the key to preventing violence. Which will Danny choose: his new forbidden werewolf lover, or the fate of the world?

A Vision of Fire contains themes that may not be suitable for all audiences. While common sense rating is 16+, reader discretion is advised.

Chapter 25: Brad is Still an Asshole

So here is one of the few chapter that has been completely rewritten for Patreon. That’s right, the free Substack version is almost unrecognizable! Even the chapter title is different!

Even though you’re getting an older version of it, it’s still one of my favorite chapters, because it was another one that only exists because Helio has me in a chokehold. He forced me to give him an entire arc of his own, despite only narrating 3 chapters, so here is the second of those chapters <3

I feel conflicted about it, and heavily debated whether or not the rewrite was important enough to let the free version have it—but I decided against it because the new version just doesn’t flow with the old version. My writing style has changed, and it shows in the Patreon version, and I think it would stand out here.

Don’t worry, though, this version is still important and doesn’t drastically change anything regarding Helio’s arc! In fact, there’s a bit more tension and fight in this one compared to the new one. If you’re curious, you’ll have to look into the Patreon version and decide for yourself which one is superior.

Dad must be drunk again. His jaw is tight; his hands so tense that they shake and veins nearly burst from the skin...

The second was when she said, “You helped a random stranger get her friend back. Let us help you get your friend back.” Now, as the alarm blares and he yanks her up the stairs, he thinks it again. She is the one from the vision.

From the shadows across the street, Lara studies the police station. Officers stand by the entrance. Windows are barred. They’ve even set up a barrier around the front, so civilians can’t get within even fifty feet of it. Just beyond it, there are a few vans with various logos. Squinting through the lamplight, she can make out the nearest one: a local news station. They’re waiting to get the best possible view of the monster when the FBI comes in a few hours to claim Helio. Her stomach twists in knots.

Resting her hands in her lap, she finds her focus drifting over to the vampire. His eyes stare out the window, but Lara realizes he’s not looking at anything in particular. He’s so still, it’s unnatural. He doesn’t fidget, his clothes don’t even move. She can’t even tell if he’s breathing. Do vampires breathe? His eyes remain faraway and still, only his mouth moving. “You’re staring.”

Lara’s body aches as her eyes flutter open and flit around.

She’s in an empty, concrete room. The walls and floor have matching grainy grayness and a single lightbulb hangs from the ceiling, flickering every so often. 

The chair she’s tied to is metal and welded to the floor. Her ankles and wrists are strapped to the arms and legs of the chair with cable ties. The delicate skin there already stings, reddened, and she hasn’t even struggled to break it yet. 

She swallows hard as she studies the room. Barren, with nothing but a rolling table that sits almost within her reach; on it, a bag and what appears to be a syringe.

“Jesus Christ…”

(( Shhh no I didn't take a few weeks off from posting. Here to repay you I'll post a longer snippet than usual. ))

Chapter 16: A Vampire Crashes a Pack Meeting

Danny could have tracked Helio’s scent without a refresher, but he stops by his place anyway.

The police have long gone from Helio’s apartment. Flowers wilt from the drizzling rain on the crumbled pavement. The shattered window remains, the glass cleared from the street but not from the crime scene. A cover was placed to keep the wind and insects out, but the apartment still feels too cold.

In the wall beside the window, Danny studies a deep, round dent. It’s far too large to have been created by a human.

As if summoned by the cracked drywall, he catches a whiff of the asshole, Brad. The signature werewolf rotten egg smell mixed with cheap cologne and burgers and beer.

More gashes streak through a wall nearer to the entrance, four long claws. A drawer, torn from the nearby dresser, lies on the ground, and shattered glass speckles the carpet below the busted window, some smeared with dried blood.

Helio’s: the scent of sulfur and rainforest.
