Simon & Izaya speak in Russian.
[[ Does anyone even understand this…? I feel like people pass by these parts of Izaya’s character entirely.
Google exists for reasons people. You can’t just look at a proverb and assume you know what it means, that’s why they’re proverbs.
“You can’t hid an awl in a bag:" You can’t keep somebody down. [ x ]
Don’t misunderstand this. Yes, the closest English translation is ‘murder will out,’ but that’s still not what it means. Proverbs don’t translate correctly into other proverbs usually. If you’ve ever taken a foreign language class, you’ve probably realized this. The source that said that was from Wikipedia a few years back, but it’s been taken down since then, which you can check for here. [ x ]
I haven’t found anywhere else that says that, either.
Also note, that you can’t hide an awl in a bag, and you can’t hide an eel in a sack have two completely different meanings. They are not interchangeable either!
"Don’t talk about ropes in a house where someone hanged himself:” Avoid any subject connected to someone’s misfortune. English equivalent, 'Don’t talk about water in the house of a drowned man.’“ [ x ]
There are three other interpretations I found,
Don’t talk about others problems in their own home.
Beware the beam in your own eye; take care of your own back yard.
Beware of speaking about touchy subjects at inappropriate times/in inappropriate places. [ x ]
It’s origin is Spanish, and was written first in Don Quixote. There are a few earlier accounts of it, but that was the one that quickly became the most popular.
That meaning is interchangeable, and that’s why the second half isn’t usually what I’ve found people didn’t consider when they put up the meaning of it.
Because of all this, there are a couple things they could be saying here, because there are a few combinations of what they might mean. I’ll leave to to fester, and that’s all.
Now that you know a bit more, feel free to let your new knowledge of entomology mess with, support or break some of your head canons. It’s your choice. Mun out. ]]
A Complete Guide To Izaya’s Hideous Jacket Collection
Between the manga, anime, and novels, Izaya wears a myriad of different jackets. However, there is a common furry thread that ties them all shittily together: Each one is horrifyingly bad very stylish, of course, so I decided to document them so we can admire his amazing fashion sense in one place. I have named them all as accurately as possible in accordance with the image they give off.
Pimpin’ Flea Trademark
For reasons that are probably obvious, this sleek, snazzy number never made it to the anime. Appearing most commonly in the novels and pretty often in the manga, too, it’s unclear what happened to this article of clothing that is clearly dear to Izaya’s cold, black heart. But let’s be honest here - odds are that Shizuo probably had something to do with its demise (but only because he was jealous of how cool it looked).
Rating: 10/10. Actually, not gonna lie. I really like this one.
Anime Couture aka “The Classic Asshole”
The most common jacket Izaya is often portrayed in, and the only style we really see him wearing in the anime. It also appears in the novels and manga as well, making it the only one to cross terrible fashion borders in all forms of Durarara. It’s distinguished by its average length to slightly past his bodacious booty, and sports two awful fuzzy cuffs and a nice fluffy ring around the hood. As observed in the pictures above, the fluffiness may vary depending on artist.
Rating: meh/wtf even is this. try harder, Izaya
The Casual Douchebag
Manga only, I believe. This appears to be the jacket Izaya likes to wear when committing even more douchey acts than normal, all while acting like he’s being the most kind and understanding person ever. It’s most memorable appearance took place during a scene where he drugged some suicidal girls and went into a pretentious douchey speech from which his sad, pathetic character never fully recovered from for the rest of the series.
Rating: 100/10 on the douche scale
Cruella DeFlea
This jacket’s unique design seems to be purely focused on the massive, tacky fur collar, and Izaya’s wearing a smile as if proud of the fact he just killed like 10 puppies to make said jacket. It could have been a classy fit, if it were not for the animal cruelty.
Rating: -100/10 (someone call the cops, honestly)
Soft Gay
The slightly less gay, but still fairly homosexual, version of Izaya’s “Anime Couture” model. For whatever reason, it’s practically the same thing, but there’s no fur around the cuffs. It’s preceded only by its weird cousin, a form of Izaya’s jacket that has neither wrist cuffs nor a bottom fur lining, but lining around the hood, which he wears while posing with one hand in his pocket and the other pointing and blaming others for his problems.
Rating: fabulous/ab fab
Before Descent Into Furry Madness
At first glance, Raijin and Middle School aged Izaya appeared to be normal. Do not be lulled into a false sense of security. They were only hiding their inner true desires to burn everyone’s eyes out in Ikebukuro with an obscene amount of fur and poor color choices later on.
Rating: you’re not fooling anyway, Tinyzaya. 0/0
Random Moment of Clarity
Aka “That One Time Izaya wore something appropriate with no fur lining anywhere in sight”. Anime only, and the caption says it all tbh. I’m convinced this was just an off day for him, or a sad attempt to mislead the Drrr universe into thinking he might be a somewhat decent person. Either that, or Shizuo ripped up all his jackets and he was simply mourning his loss before he went on another crazed shopping spree to one up his fashion mistakes in an even more appalling manner.
Rating: you tried/being a reasonable and normal human being
All Hail the Trashlord
Over the series, Izaya’s gratuitous fur addiction and love for all things terrible has only evolved to become worse and more dire over time - until it leads us here, to this…disaster from Sunset. It’s not even a jacket. It’s a fuzzy ass robe because apparently Izaya has moved into Flea royalty now and continues to have no sense of shame. He’s obviously going through some…things.
Rating: 10/10 (surprisingly, it’s still in better taste than most of the others, somehow. you know, with 10 being the rating for how pretentious it is)
Nice list, except Izaya’s jackets aren’t hideous, they’re quite nice, thank you.
Dudes y’all need to know the difference between Anti Villians, Anti Heroes, Villians and Heroes.
Hero is Naruto Uzumaki, who’s just altruistic.
Anti Hero is Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist (2003), who turns to help Ed’s side when she realizes she’s being manipulated by Dante, but only really helps because she wants to become human and find validation in her existence. Or Deadpool could be another great example of an anti hero. Greeling from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood maybe too(at least in the beginning).
Anti Villian is Gin Ichimaru or Itachi, who worked on the bad side for what they saw as a good purpose or reason. Both ironically seemed to recognize that trying to do everything alone was their ultimate downfall.
Villian: That’s uh, Jinnai Yadogiri from Durarara!! Dante(Fullmetal Alchemist 2003), Father(Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood) Or Aizen from Bleach.
There are expection-characters like Izaya Orihara, that will manipulate both sides. He’s not truly on the heros’ sides or the villians’. He’s neither an anti hero nor an anti-villain, he’s just one of those nuetral characters that piss people off from both sides and manages to still care for at least a couple people in his twisted social circle(like Shinra, Namie and arguably Mikage). It’s a very complicated situation...
