Working again with clay in the open studio today, I became interested in tearing, cutting and piercing. After experimenting with some textural approaches I became curious to try the marbling ink which someone else in the room was using. I attempted to dip the clay pieces, but didn’t have much success, so ended up playing with the paper towel instead…
Made these three clay pieces this afternoon in open studio. I was enjoying the process and tactile nature of the materials, and feel that they are quite fleshly and erotic... The sexuality of creative expression.
On my second day at my new placement I went to explore the art therapy room, and made this piece. I was concerned that the facilities did not seem to include provision for a wide range of 2 and 3 d materials. I was originally thinking of making something with clay, but the bucket was full of dried out and discarded pieces from some time ago. There did not seem to be any fresh supplies. The paper was all of a similar type and colour, and there were few other materials for collage or mixed media work. I managed to find a few pieces of tissue paper, glue, paint, and wax crayons, as well as some masking tape and paint rollers. I felt that this piece shows me attempting to create a frame, though it seems rather weak and disconnected. I have used several layers of paper which suggests to me the multiple layers of experience and understanding I am having to make sense of. I have made some holes in the tissue to see the base or foundations and to test that they are firm and solid, and finally put my own hand in to delve and then to make an impression.
After a hectic week, which saw me flying to New York to my father's deathbed, I welcomed the opportunity to create something in the open studio. This hanging and rotating paper Sculpture suggests birth and death, attachments and connection, and being in suspense.
First exercise back at uni with a huge group of art therapy trainees, we were asked to choose a photo or postcard of those available, and make a piece of art based on it. I was drawn to the image of the bicycle which reminded me of my Santiago pilgrimage many years ago, and the associated number 51 suggesting that I was entering my 51st year. The idea of life as a journey, and the cyclical nature of years passing felt relevant to me on the first day of term which was also my 50th birthday. The piece I made was a circular wheel like object criss-crossed with strings like a spiders web or dream catcher. A paper tape is interwoven which suggested to me a rambling circuitous path which I felt my life has taken.
Cleared my desk and stuck something together today. The first thing I've made for a few weeks. Two pieces of green tissue paper are pressed together containing paint, plaster strips and metal flakes. The top surface is also painted. Hidden wounds and joys perhaps mostly contained within the framework of the organism... The thin matrix of tissue however allows them to mostly be seen. The shape of this complex content gives rise to the final outline of the image itself.....
Visit to the garden at Hatfield House we were struck by the window in a hedge. Seeing and being seen...

Ceramic money box based on a Mexican one that used to hang in my bedroom as a child. I found it frightening and used to cover it up at night to avoid seeing the creepy shadows which it cast on the wall
Working on an object based on childhood recollections...
Hand Bindings: made these in the open studio as a response to feeling emotionally fragile somewhat wounded. They were wrapped in plaster gauze and then cut open so that I could regain the use of my hands. The resulting negative shape is like a seed pod or sloughed off snake skin.
Work from the penultimate training group today. Created a den or safe space with connected tissue paper people inside. It's a little regressive. Like a childhood den supported by chairs, also looks a little like a coffin which suggests the imminent ending of the group.... A kind of death.
Window dressings in the breeze
this installation was made in the training group after the discussion about members leaving, and how to process this. I felt compelled to use the exterior and interior spaces for this piece, and also wanted to incorporate the breeze which caused the paper tentacles to come to life.
