“All of us…"Â
Pattie spoke, her voice no longer whiny, but stern. There were no tears when she spoke, though the muscles of her face became more rigid. Her body, however, relaxed at the feeling of his arms enclosing around her body, keeping her warm even with the cold wind that was blowing that night. "He’s not my father… I suppose that was evident enough for you to figure it out by yourself… Only the two younger are his own, David and Boo. I suppose he fancied mummy, but he hated the already-made family he’d have to take with her. She’s not safe from him either, actually… She just prefers to pretend he’s a good man because he saved her from being a single, 30 year old mother.”
“You don’t have to live this way.” George narrowed his brow, but otherwise remained perfectly still. “No one should.... and you least of all...”Â
SIlence fell, and for a long moment, George questioned himself and his own thoughts, but did not find them to be worth censoring any longer.Â
“We could leave.” He stated bluntly, finally releasing the girl and holding her just far enough away to read her expression. A gust of wind took up the length of Pattie’s hair and tossed it across his vision. Her lips had twisted into an unreadable curve. “What will happen to you if you stay?”
