FINANCIAL AND PROFESSIONAL PROBABILITIES
“The world is a complicated place” a phrase mentioned by renowned New York Times columnist Paul Krugman when trying to explain the economy, he further noted that trying to describe an economic outlook through numbers and statistics seems far more complicated than it should be. The real analysis lies in social tendency, mainly in access to capital created through job opportunities that create a better quality of life. When analyzing the economic climate, the numbers are daunting, only one percent of the population of the United States of America owns a third of the country’s wealth, inequality became the norm.
French economist Thomas Piketty notes that capital and monetary assets are in complete disproportion to the global economy, he states that “The lack of equality does not create any benefit”, when thinking about this particular characteristic inequality is a constant impediment of success, someone from a third world country would know this all too well. Globalization, a term that seems all too familiar; its main objective is to achieve potential and stabilize the socioeconomic level of the population through interaction. Considering that globalization can have great benefits, as Joseph Stiglitz points out, “has never guaranteed stability”, corruption, abuse of power and mediocre leadership are common denominators within this particular economic model.
On the other hand, it is extremely necessary to point out that while globalization has created countless jobs, it has also contributed to the detriment of culture and traditions, hierarchy and power are imposed by the wealthiest on the rest of the world, “The American Way” is deemed the best possible answer when choosing a course of action. For students in the linguistic fields the English language is a very powerful tool for achieving success, the constant need for people in the field is expanding, from teachers to translators and even interpreters, the need for communication is a common denominator that has created numerous jobs in varied fields.
The prosperity of a country greatly depends on employment, linguistics creates jobs in tourism, education, health and wellness, the judicial and governmental sector, the doors have opened for professional in various languages. From a different perspective it could be seen as a great opportunity to pick and choose the scale employment one decides to reach, the more languages that a professional becomes competent in, the greater the opportunity that is created. The objective is to never forget that constant efficiency is the key to success, linguistics is very demanding simply because people evolve, sometimes they migrate and completely change, so one can never learn the entirety of a particular language.
In conversation with other bilinguals, the same conclusion is made; being competent in two languages seems basic, great but basic, learning a third and sometimes fourth language creates even more opportunities and separates someone from the pack. From a personal point of view, I appreciate the opportunities that being bilingual has created, more so because it levels the playing field especially if you’re a female from what it considered a third world country. Travel has greatly broadened my horizon as well, so much so that I would wholeheartedly consider relocating to another country for an opportunity of study and immerse myself in a language as well as another culture.
The enjoyment of knowledge and achievement is a greater payout than any amount of money, education has become my greatest asset. Linguistics can create a lifelong student in those of us that choose to go into its various fields, it can help us evolve and develop into professionals that are in high demand and create even better opportunities for future students. By becoming highly knowledgeable, experienced and qualified individuals, we ensure ourselves the attainability of a particular quality of our life, because what each of us considers luxury is subjective but a stable job will help us to provide the means for comfort and monetary security.
What I wish to accomplish by writing this is to convey that ultimately the creation of various possibilities gives us a greater chance at success and by personally rejecting conformity we allow ourselves to rise above professionally which could translate to a higher monetary compensation and a deeper respect for professionals in our field.
