Folk Names: American Adder’s Tongue, Serpent’s Tongue, Adder’s Mouth, Yellow Snowdrop, Dog’s Tooth Violet

Gender: Feminine

Planet: Moon

Element: Water

Powers: Healing

Magical Uses: Soak some adder’s tongue in cold water and apply it to a wound or bruise (wrap it in a piece of cloth) until the herb grows warm. Next, bury the wet herb in a muddy place. The wound will be cured.

ADAM AND EVE ROOTS (Orchis spp.) Poison

Power: Love, Happiness

Magical Uses: Carry the two roots in a small bag at all times to attract a love. If you wish to be free from amatory competitors, also carry the two roots sewn into a small bag. Given to a couple they ensure continued happiness.

Folk Names: Cape Gum, Egyptian Thorn, Gum Arabic Tree, Kikwata, Mkwatia, Mgunga, Mokala

Gender: Masculine

Planet: Sun

Element: Air

Deities: Osiris, Astarte, Ishtar, Diana, Ra

Powers: Protection, Psychic Powers

Ritual Uses: The wood is used as fuel in sacred fires in India, and is also used in building temples.

Magical Uses: A sprig of the tree placed over the bed wards off evil, as it does when tucked into the turban in Eastern countries. When the wood is burned with sandalwood the psychic powers are stimulated. Acacia is also used in money and love spells, although in the latter case the outcome would be a platonic love.

Honoring the Shades

Ancient Romans observed this day as Feralia, which was the last of three festivals that honored the dead. They took offerings to the tombs and laid them out to appease the spirits. While we are not always able to take offerings to the tombs of our loved ones, we can still honor their spirits, commune with them, and provide offerings to them. 

Begin by creating sacred space around the altar you will be working with. Call the names of the deceased you wish to honor. Take salt, bread, and flowers and place them in an offering bowl on your altar. The salt will keep them from lingering too long, the bread will nourish their soul, and the flowers will show your appreciation for their presence in your life. Invite them to stay for the day within that sacred space, and be open to any messages they may have.

Strength and Courage Spell

Some days you need a boost of strength and courage. That’s okay. We all do from time to time, whether we show it outwardly or not. 

For this spell, gather the following three items: a polished piece of bloodstone, an image of the Strength card from the tarot, and a white candle. Bloodstone vibrates with the energy of courage, which pairs nicely with the type of strength symbolized by the Strength card. We need not always exude brute force to be strong. We can use our will, compassion, and intellect to exert our strength. 

Place the image of the Strength card upon your altar, with the candle and the bloodstone atop it. Light the candle and visualize the bloodstone absorbing both the courageous light of the candle and the strength of the card. Carry the bloodstone with you.

Although it sounds simplistic, we can envision our happiness as a dimmer switch, and we can make the conscious decision to turn it up. 

Close your eyes and see your inner happiness switch. If it’s not all the way up, turn it up and see your world get brighter. Open your eyes and take some steps on the physical plane to turn up your happiness as well: get rid of old clutter, diffuse mood-boosting essential oil, bring in fresh flowers, or donate any decoration in your space that doesn’t lift your spirits.
