A sea of Hong Kong protesters giving way to an ambulance.
These people are not rioters.
Sometimes crying is the holiest thing you can do. Sometimes it’s sleeping. Or cooking for a friend. Or sending a note in the mail. Or listening to someone share how bad their work day was or about how scary the future seems.
Sometimes sitting in silence - really sitting in that excruciating emotional pain and muttering the words “I don’t understand” and “God, please help me” over and over - sometimes that’s the most intimate and raw and spiritual thing.
Sometimes what we think is the least “holy” is actually so close to the very heart of God.

“I have always been moved by the madness of the sea.”
— José María Heredia, tr. by William Cullen Bryant, from “Ode To Niagara,”
“Does it comfort or terrify you to think that a God who shook the stars into existence like glitter on black paper, who pulled apart the sea and the sky like Velcro on someone’s shoes, that built blood and bone out of dust and ground- does it comfort or terrify you that that God made you? Has mapped out your life like he did the constellations, has already decided on your Promised Land, but probably not told you? Does it comfort or terrify you to think that the whole world is really in his hands?”
— ‘The Whole World, In His Hands,’ - Megan’s Poetry #272
