I couldn’t help it. It just popped in there. The 80s saw an influx of science-based comedies such as Weird Science, Real Genius, and Short Circuit in so small part due to the advancement in special effects post-Star Wars. But 1984s Ghostbusters reigns supreme in the supernatural comedy category, IMHO. It treats its paranormal “science," if you want to call it that, seriously, allowing the creative minds of Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, and Ivan Reitman to get super-creative with their story-telling prowess, basing their comedy chops off of mythological and somewhat horrific supernatural events. But really, when I first watched this film I was scared out of my wits, most memorably when Sigourney Weaver’s Dana Barrett (the second Weaver film on my list) gets possessed by the Sumerian demon, Zuul. Needless to say, I didn’t close my eyes during the second viewing. Or the 300th (I’m not counting, but really, I have seen this movie way too many times). With Aykroyd sputtering lines about “full-torso apparitions” like it’s nobody’s business, can you imagine anyone other than him, or anyone else, playing any role in this movie? NO! Sorry Eddie Murphy (who was originally slated to play Zeddmore). And yes, Bill Murray is a blast, but so are Ramis (RIP), Rick Moranis (God, he’s so good in this), Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton. Everyone in this film is having fun and it shows. And with classic special effects, authentic scares, and an endless supply of quotes and one-liners, I will watch this film another 300 times if given the chance - just more sporadically over the next few decades. And stop ripping on 1989s GBs 2 and 2016s GBs: Answer the Call!!! No, they’re not the original, but they ain’t bad either. Really people, lighten up a little. #top10 #top10films #ghostbusters #danaykroyd #haroldramis #ivanreitman #billmurrayforpresident #sigourneyweaver #rickmoranis
