Open Starter. Farmer’s Market.

Her gaze is dropped for only an instant, hands working to carefully undo the paper wrapped pristinely around the fresh bouquet, the first set of flowers having already been collected by strangers milling along in the steady flow of foot traffic. It’s only when green orbs raise th  at she realizes her daughter had moved ahead without warning, tugging on the coat of whoever caught her attention first and handing them the flower with a bashful laugh before tearing back her way, practically suctioning herself to her mother’s side and drawing a laugh from Nesrin’s own stained lips. “Sorry.” She calls, a hand waved apologetically before falling into the curls that resembled her own with a comforting touch. “That was meant to come with a happy holiday but I fear we’re still working on our social interactions.” 

                              for someone that was a horrifically bad cook  ( and had a tendency to consume junk food over anything else )  it was definitely surprising to see the brunette roaming the aisles of the farmer’s market mid-afternoon. but to be fair, her fridge was empty and with the two days off she had, ayda figured it was perhaps an opportunity to visit the location she used to work at as a teenager  ( her late grandmother made her )  and see whenever or not she could perhaps get something to eat  ( that wasn’t an apple ) but it was then that she was approached by a small creature, initially startled a little by the little’s girl presence, and even more so when she handed her a flower.  ❝ um, i... thank you? ❝  it wasn’t that she disliked children, but she certainly had no idea how to act around them. as the girl ran off, ayda followed the direction until her celadon colored orbs landed on a familiar face. ❝ it’s fine, ❝ she was quick to announce, shaking her head before motioning down to the child hiding behind her. ❝ i forgot you had a kid, ❝

Lucy and Ayda weren’t exactly good influences on each other, though it wasn’t all bad either. They supported one another, that was the best way to put it, though that support wasn’t always for positive endeavours. Lucy however was filled with pride as she watched Ayda take down the rather cocky gentleman. “It’s coming, don’t you fret,” she joked, in all honesty though Lucy had never seen herself as a married woman, no matter who she ended up with. She took a sip of her own drink as she eyes surveyed the scene, weighing up Ayda’s statement, “ooh yes, let’s get drunk,” she said, raising her glass, “I don’t remember the last time I got properly drunk.”

                               in truth, ayda had enough of good influences in her life that tried setting her on the rightful passage, starting from the earliest days when she first came to bradford and had to obey her grandmother’s rules to this very day. in a way, it was refreshing  ( to her )  to have someone like lucy around, the type of friend who wouldn’t scold her for smoking like a chimney or drinking like sailor ( or getting into fights ) on saturday nights. ❝ i’m not a fan of big rocks, just to let you know― i prefer somethin’ simple, lowkey, ❝ the brunette mused, plump lips puckered up slightly in amusement as she fanned the fifty bucks at her face. despite all the joking about it, ayda never considered marriage to be her thing, not because she didn’t want to get married  ( there’s a part of her that maybe, once thought about it )  but the whole idea of a someone actually being loyal and worthy of her hand? yeah, she could bet her life on that never happening. men, as she came to know from the earliest times of her life, were only good for one thing― and marriage wasn’t one of them. ❝ you don’t? then let’s change that, ❝  the brunette was quick to vouch for a good time that would undoubtedly end up at her place with the world’s most greasiest tacos or chili hotdogs they could find at 4am.

“It’s a concert. Why wouldn’t he just get a beer like a normal fucking person,” Angel directs her question to Ayda, knowing full well the man and his mixed drink are still within earshot. Parked behind the bar, she keeps her fellow bartender company and extends a helping hand when she can. Even though she is offering her limited services and volunteering her time, the same rules still apply. Just because she’s at a different venue doesn’t mean she’s miraculously a good bartender. She’s just as shitty at making drinks at The Phoenix as she is at Restricted Access. “To be fair,” Angel starts, pushing her hair back before leaning against the counter. A teasing grin crosses her face. “I’m really only here to see if there’s anybody in the band worth going home with,” She admits with a shrug, joking unless she sees someone she likes.

                              ❝ because men are a disappointment and we’re better off without them? ❝ the brunette bartender flipped a dishtowel around her shoulder in the most elegant way ever, the sound of the fabric hitting her bare skin coming right on point as she made that observation. naturally, with a smile on her face. if there was one thing ayda loved about her job, it was conversations at the bar like these. the fact the man in question was sitting right there?  she certainly hadn’t cared. in all fairness, despite her lack of bartending skills, ayda genuinely liked having angel behind the counter every once in a while for nothing than a good banter, just like the one happening right now. ❝ and speaking of beer, ❝  she then used perhaps the oldest trick in the book and popped the bottle cap on the edge of the countertop, before handing it over to her friend. her celadon colored hues than moved over to some kind of indie band on the stage that had a gig that night, up until then not even noticing them which explained a small look of interest.  ❝ maybe the drummer, after like... two beers? the rest would take far too much time, ❝  ayda chuckled, leaning against the back counter as well to take a sip of her own beer.

With how drunk some of the southsiders were that night, it wouldn’t have been a surprise to Esmeray in the least if they’d been willing to up the bets that she’d thrown out there. A hundred bucks had been waved off as if it were a nothing bet, a statistic that she was happy to bank for future betting fun. “You know, I think they’d probably have gone for it. Their pride wouldn’t have let them turn the offer down,” she snorted. There was something satisfying about seeing their egos get burst as they lost, shoving the money in her direction with a grumble about how Ayda had just gotten lucky and next time they wouldn’t go easy on her. “Could turn into a real side hustle for you if you wanted it to.” It wasn’t as if there was a shortage of big-headed drunkards around, so the possibilities were truly endless. Giving a grateful nod in Ayda’s direction, Es pocketed the cash, the feeling of the hundred bucks more of a relief than she’d expected it to be. “At least let me buy you a drink as a thanks? Dinner even? Dessert?”

                               ❝ why i am not surprised, ❝ the brunette commented with a roll of her celadon hues, soon enough finding an empty bar stool to lean against so she could  ( peacefully )  drink her beer.  ❝ that’s why i also think you could’ve gotten far more than a hundred bucks, ❝ with a nod of her head, ayda’s attention was stolen for just a moment as another group of men now circled the pool table, the suggestion es made rolling in her mind for a couple of moments. ❝ if stevie ever found out i’m doin’ that shit in her bar she’d have a field day, ❝ she commented, plump lips puckering up at the sole idea of her boss actually learning about the scam she’d pull on her paying customers. but then again... the rebellious side of ayda...  ❝ but there’s always other bars, ❝ a flicker of mischievousness flashed in her eyes as she returned her gaze on es, who soon enough began suggesting options to repay her. not that ayda was in any need of a help  ( despite her fridge being empty )  but the thought of getting her hands on that greasy taco from a mexican food truck down the street... ❝ i could let you buy me dinner, ❝  ayda then pondered playfully, index finger tapping on her chin as if she hadn’t already set her mind on it. ❝ but don’t think that’s enough to get me into bed, i ain’t that easy, ❝ she continued in a playful mood, index finger now pointing at her friend.  ❝ it takes four tacos, ❝

It wasn’t unusual for Grayson ever since he was a kid to stir in bed. Unable to fall asleep many a night, he would often read or color under the covers with a flashlight until he eventually passed out. His mother often found him the next morning with a pencil in hand and drool pooling at the edge of his mouth. Even now, he used the fire escape in the middle of the night, to draw or clear his head, usually with a blanket and some freshly made hot chocolate. What he was expecting was someone else to be out here at one in the morning. It threw him for a loop as he thought it was his space for solace, but now a visitor too perhaps sought the same thing. “Uh, hey. Don’t mean to interrupt, but are you gonna be here long?”

                          ever since moving into her apartment building two years ago, ayda considered the fire escape to be her little private space whenever she couldn’t sleep at night  ( which was often ) .  sure, her apartment had a small balcony that she could’ve used instead, but in her defense anyone on the damn street could’ve seen her up there if they just bothered to glance up. yet the fire escape?  it was located on the other side, the one facing just a ton of brick walls, and away from prying eyes. the brunette wasn’t paying much attention to the time she spent sitting on the stairs, a lit cigarette between her slender fingers as she stared up at the stars above her head. more often than not when she finished a night shift at the phoenix, she couldn’t sleep well before 3am, no matter how much she tried. expect herself, she only knew one person ( aka neighbor )  that occupied the fire escape, until she heard an unfamiliar tone speak. tilting her head to a side, her dark chocolate hues landed on the tall male, brow knitting together slightly in the process. ❝ i didn’t know i was on the clock, ❝ she commented, tone dripping with a hint of annoyance before she looked away.  ❝ i didn’t know anyone else knew about this place, ❝  she then admitted just a moment later.

Lucy watched on with glee, this was why she liked spending time with Ayda so much, the girl had the same love for taking down others that Lucy did. Lucy couldn’t resist a bet from a cocky guy, and most of the time she was able to put them in their place, something that filled her with a great sense of achievement, almost as good as watching someone else do it. She grinned mischeviously at the man and his little group, raising her glass to Ayda, she moved over to her, “you are the woman of my dreams,” she joked with a smile handing Ayda her drink.

                           whenever the two of them got together bad decisions were certainly made, and tonight was no exception. with lucy on the sidelines, ayda could’ve conquered the world  ( or so she thought )  which was clear given that extra boost of confidence she had practically radiating off her. once defeating the man in question and while watching him mumble shit down his chin while opening his wallet to give her those well deserved fifty bucks, ayda was on cloud nine. as he left and lucy joined her, she began to chuckle.  ❝ i’m just waitin’ for the ring then, ❝  she joked right back as she took the whiskey that offered, taking a large chug of it to calm down her raging nerves because at this point, she could’ve challenged anyone at the bar.  luckily however, her shift had ended just an hour ago which meant there was no need to care about anything other than getting her own drinks.  ❝ so, i know i said we’re going to have a chill night at the bar,  ❝  it never happens,  ❝ but i’m three tequilas in and i actually do want to get drunk tonight, ❝

Elliot watches with an amused smirk as Ayda smokes the increasingly disgruntled who’d challenged her in the first place. “I think he let you win,” he chimes in with a joking tone, taking a sip of his beer, “who else would lose that badly in ten minutes?” It seems like an unlikely feat, especially since he’s seen this guy play at some other bars in town and he wasn’t nearly this bad. “Probably trying to get on your good side, Ayda.” He doesn’t need to finish his thought, especially as the guy in question glares at him for chiming in at all. It seemed obvious to Elliot he was trying to let Ayda win a bit before attempting to get her home. Except she’d clearly beat him more than “Nothing attractive about losing like a dickhead.” he says flatly, lifting his shoulders in a nonchalant shrug.  

                           hearing a comment coming from an  ( unfortunately )  familiar tone, the brunette was quick to look aside, her voluminous hair tossed to a side as she offered the southsider a glare.  ❝  and who asked for your opinion, dunsmore? ❝ she was quick to snap back, brow raising alongside her temper as she leaned into her pool stick. it seemed like she wasn’t the only one ticked off by a dunsmore considering that her opponent began shooting daggers at him from the moment he opened his mouth.  ❝ i don’t have a good side, ❝  ayda continued, this time turning around to look over at the other male, them now holding eye contact once more.  ❝ and even if i had, this wouldn’t be the way to get on it, ❝  a brow raised at the same time her opponent lifted his hands up in defeat, causing her dark chocolate hues to roll in annoyance.  ❝ pathetic, ❝  she had no problem commenting while taking his fifty bucks the following moment, before he and his buds left the bar.  returning back to the bar where she was supposed to be working behind ( after all, her shift was no where near over ) , she took a long chug of her beer before leaning against the surface, now facing elliot.  ❝ got nothin’ better to do than scare off my potential suitors on a tuesday night? ❝

Es wouldn’t claim that she was struggling, exactly, but money was definitely getting tighter and tighter the longer she went without a genuinely stable source of income. She made enough to sort of survive through the couple of things she was doing online to get paid, but she knew the time was coming close that she needed to figure something out. Hustling people at the local dive bars probably wasn’t quite what she had in mind, but sometimes people made it entirely too easy. She wasn’t good at pool herself, but she knew that Ayda had a pretty incredible knack for it. So, when she saw the woman out there dusting it up with some guy, Es had been more than happy to sit back and start taking bets in Ayda’s favor, throwing down some cash with some other random drunks. As the disgruntled southsider left grumbling, Esmeray swooped in with a bright smile towards Ayda. “I’ve got to take you around to other bars with me, really make this into a side hustle. I just made a hundred bucks betting on you with some drunk guys in the corner, so…thank you,” she chuckled, flashing the cash with a laugh before taking some of it to offer Ayda’s way. “I feel like I owe you, you did all the hard work and I just scammed the drunkest idiots I could find into betting against you.”

                              in truth, nobody had to really persuade ayda to do things like these because in reality, she would’ve done it for free. there was just something about fighting people twice her size and humbling them that left her feeling more victorious than with those fifty bucks she soon had in her hands. but, when es came with an idea for them to combine fun and money on the side, she would’ve been a fool not to agree, especially when she knew the drunks in the bar would certainly fall for it. once the rowdy southsider left with fifty bucks lighter in his wallet, ayda was beaming from ear to ear as es joined her.  ❝ hundred bucks? ❝  her dark chocolate hues shot up wide in surprise, before laughing.  ❝ well, shit. next time let’s make it to five hundred, ❝  despite her  ( quite playful )  tone, there was a big part of her that was actually serious. yet, as soon as her friend started handing her half of the cash, she began shaking her head.  ❝ nah, you don’t owe me a thing. i was doin’ it for fun, you bettin’ is entirely your thing, ❝  and well, the fact that she truly didn’t need the money at all, unlike es, but it wasn’t something she’d ever admit out loud.

     To say she was impressed with Ayda’s gameplay would be an understatement. The winemaker in soul had been in plenty of bars around the world and had been a bystander at many a snooker table, but it had been quite some time since she’d seen a woman corner a so many balls in such a short amount of time. For a moment there a flash of worry crossed Cat’s brow as she took in the brash crowd surrounding and cheering on Ayda’s opponent, knowing there was a chance they could cry out ‘RINGER’. A hand of hers gently wrapped around the brunette’s arm as she taunted a little more, high on her victory and the tequila surging in her veins. The restaurant owner winced slightly as the big man and shaping up to be sore loser tossed back ‘lighter’. His wallet would be getting lighter if he were to payout. The rowdy southsider was quick to point out that the game wasn’t over yet. When he stepped away and toward the edge of the billiard table, Cat took that opportunity to speak personally with Ayda. “When you taunt and talk your shit, please try to remember it’s just us two against all of them…”

                             per usual, ayda had very little  ( or close to none )  worries about the consequences of her actions. with a sharp tongue and a feisty personality that had always gotten her into more trouble than good, one would think she had learned her lesson, but alas... feeling someone’s hand wrap around her arm, her head moved to face her friend, smiling from ear to ear  ( definitely a little buzzed with tequila )  due to her victory. she could’ve already felt those fifty bucks in her tiny hands, and given the stance of the man that challenged her  ( he was practically fuming from across the table )  she was truly having a blast.  hearing her friend’s comment, ayda turned her head to look over at her in surprise, brows going up for a moment.  ❝ and what do you think they’re gonna’ do?  i’ll fight their tall asses if i have to, i don’t give a fuck, ❝  ayda scoffed, leaning against the pool stick she was holding in her free hand.  ❝ don’t worry, okay? i know men like him. he’s all tough when he got his boys and thinks he owns the place... but deep down he’s just a scared little boy who’s daddy’ never complimented his drawings, ❝  a grin reached the brunette’s lips then, which only widened as her opponent seemed to have missed the next hole.

“What makes you think that I’m not letting you win?” Reed smirked back at the woman who had hustled him into thinking he’d easily win this game of pool. He was down with little hope of winning at this point, so he knew he’d have to cut his losses, “obviously, there’s something else going on here,” he reasoned with her, “you know this table like the back of your hand and I am technically new in town.” Twelve years was a long time to be away from the town he grew up in and the only reason he had been in The Phoenix was to drag his drunk mother home before the cops did.

Sighing, he put his hands up in defeat, “okay, we both know that you’re going to get that fifty fair and square. You’re going to shame me in front of everyone in this bar and I’ll take it, but you gotta teach me how exactly you learned how to play pool like that.” So, he let his ego get the best of him, lead him to betting the fifty only to talk to her, but he still wouldn’t let the opportunity go.

                                ❝ please, is that the best excuse you got? ❝ as soon as those words fell from her lips, so did a small scoff. naturally, it was something she expected to hear, considering he had proven to be just like any other man she came in contact with, just further proving her theory about all men being the same. placing her hands on her hips, her chin rose up as she continued, before letting out a chuckle as soon as she realized what he implied went on down.  ❝ oh, so now i’m a cheat? ❝  the brunette shook her head a little in disbelief.  ❝ do you talk to all women like that? or am i just an exception? ❝  now she was definitely teasing him, brows lifting up in sheer playfulness before a grin began to spread across her plump limps once he lifted his hands up in defeat. she got him right where she wanted, and hell, she was feeling victorious about it. ❝ somethin’ tells me it’s not going to be your first embarrassin’ moment in life, so you’ll survive, ❝  she continued, head tilting slightly to a side as she smirked right back at him.  ❝  and why would i want to reveal my secrets to you?  i could just take my fifty and hit the road, ❝

Jaylen felt strange drinking most places. The idea that he could potentially bump into his ex worried him. They were in such an odd spot, and Jaylen was just now feeling like he was really starting to understand and take the reins in regards to his mental health. Sitting at the bar he watched the entire ordeal at the pool tables. He watched as a too-full-of-himself-guy challenged a tiny-but-powerful woman. Drinking his beer, he simply sat off to himself and watched. Jaylen had always been the kind to observe from a distance. He was fairly shy most of the time. He laughed though, hearing her challenge the man she had just whooped in pool. Standing up, he moved towards the crowd, just knowing how some men reacted to defeat. As the crowd slowly dispersed he looked to the girl. “Damn, you kicked his ass… how long have you been playing?”

                              just like she assumed, the man she just beat at his own game was starting to protest, accusing her of cheating. it was perhaps the more common reaction of them all, whenever someone as arrogant as him was humbled by someone that they initially hadn’t seen as a threat. cutting men’s egos with her fingernails was perhaps the most fun activity ayda could do on nights like these, while working a double shift at the phoenix. ❝ i’m all down for round two! ❝  she shouted towards the man in question as his pals were dragging him away, chuckling a little to herself. as the crowd finally dispersed, she turned around only to be met by another male this time, who decided to comment on the whole ordeal.  ❝ i shattered his tiny little ego, which is far better if you ask me, ❝  she was quick to comment back, shoulders coming up for a small shrug.  ❝  since i was 13, that’s when i started bar-hoppin’, ❝

                          it was supposed to be a typical ( uneventful ) night at the phoenix, if it weren’t for the crowd gathered around the small brunette, and twice-her-size southsider playing pool. it was ( obviously ) a mistake to push ayda’s buttons and say she couldn’t take three shots of tequila and play, because if there was something she never backed down from, it was a challenge. and while she did agree to play along and ignore all the cheering that was definitely not for her benefit ( the man had a lot of southside friends ) , it took her exactly 48 seconds to push almost every ball in it’s rightful place, the crowd going silent after realizing she was better than she originally seemed. ❝ looks like i’ll be goin’ home with those fifty bucks after all, ❝  she commented on the bet they made, offering her opponent a smirk as she confidently stood before them. ❝— is your wallet getting heavier now? or do you still want to call it beginner’s luck? ❝
