i see a lot of fondness in feminist spaces for women-lead period pieces and while i get their role in women’s lit and the formative media a lot of young girls end up consuming i also can’t help but feel a little alienated, like i’m missing something, wondering if there are any other former little girls out there who see the 45th adaptation of a pretty white woman in a bustle exploring the new estate grounds and all they can think is, “i cannot relate to this any fucking less and, mom, if i could go back in time and change one thing it would be having less shame in my interests as a teenager because you deserved to suffer through a lot more dragonball episodes played in the living room”

for a lot of people who get really into those it’s hard not to feel like they’re a “safe” way to feel pro-woman but without actually having to let go any of their fixations on an almost exclusively cishet & white worldview…I know that’s not the case for everyone but they still make my eyes glaze over all the same. 

like, my mom watched the A&E Pride & Prejudice miniseries literally every single weekend for the majority of my teenaged life and a good chunk of my childhood, but she could not sit through one episode of my favorite things without picking it apart and making a big deal about how much she did not want to watch it. I hate how much of my life I wasted assuming she was right and that was normal and I was just weird for not liking that kinda shit like every other girl in my world. God damn
