“The fact that Clay is such a broken and pitiful man in addition to being an odious piece of shit is actually a brilliant choice by the writers, because it cements how thoroughly vile and unpleasant Clay really is: You don't even get the visceral pleasure of hating him, the cathartic satisfaction that comes with watching some asshole get humiliated and taken down a peg, because he's already humiliated. He's already defeated and broken. He's been that way since before we ever met him, long before the show started following his life. He's pitiful, a wretched and worthless loser in every sense of the word, but he's also too awful to sympathize with and relate to.
You see this shell of a man, this childish and self-destructive asshole who is the ultimate cause of all his problems, and you don't even feel anger or righteous indignation towards him. He's not worth that level of passion and consideration. Instead he just makes you feel sick and a little sad, like watching the bloated corpse of a dead rat rotting inside of a dumpster or a puddle of filth congealing in some grimy gutter. What's the point of hating that filth? What good does it do to trash what is already trash and can't be anything else? That's what Clay is, ultimately. He despises himself more than any of us ever could, because he knows exactly what he is but is too weak and self-absorbed to change for the better.
That fact is what makes him so thoroughly repugnant as a villain, what sets him apart from other antagonists that we love to hate. He makes hating him a chore, a burden, a pointless and unfulfilling waste of emotional labor. Clay truly is fucking awful, because knowing how awful he is does nothing to bring about any good or overcome any evil. He denies us even the simple pleasure of witnessing justice.
This show should never have been cancelled.”
