can i rant about stolen throne for a bit... but shh.. we must go under the cut... because SA mention trigger warning... and spoilers... for this 15+ year old book i guess...
i've read the book like a year ago and i'm still haunted by how much the entirety of chapter 8 pissed me off. for context - that's the one where rowan gets slapped and groped while pretending to be a commoner (and it's pretty much implied that much worse would go down if no one stepped in), all of which is being witnessed by loghain <- a character we are constantly reminded has trauma from being forced to watch his mother getting raped by orlesians.
now, i'm not saying i want loghain and rowan to sit down and have a therapy talk about their burdens. i'm also just as tired of women being used as nothing but stepping stones for male characters development as the next guy (which is something this book might as well be a tutorial for), but i feel like it's even worse that what follows instead is a scene where rowan puts on a dress with the intention of presenting herself to maric, only to get rejected by... hearing him being "preoccupied" with someone else. and loghain, i guess upon seeing her in a dress for the first time, suddenly feels his cold and distant demeanour melt and simply must confess his undying love to her in this completely appropriate moment.
i think part of me is just upset cuz i genuinely believe that loghain and rowan have potential, platonic or romantic. i think there's genuine understanding for them to find in that short amount of time they get, yet nearly every romance scene feels like i suddenly don't know either of those characters and it's very hard to blame anything other than gaiders inability to write women. i feel like i can think of a billion other ways that scene could've gone. if they talked about literally anything else. if there was even the slightest acknowledgment. if it was exaggerated enough to make it really obvious that this is so insanely tone-deaf for all the reasons the original scene fails to acknowledge.
rowan gets slapped, groped, rejected, rejected, rejected, forced into being with maric and then killed off by a mystery illness so that maric can get just suicidal enough for the events of calling to happen.
i think the reasons i'm even bringing loghain into any of this is because this missed opportunity to me really solidifies the fact that gaider only uses sexual assault as a way to make his fantasy "darker" and convince himself that he's not writing your typical escapist fairytale. if rowan did not get groped, little would change. if loghains mother was simply killed instead of also raped, little would change. their traumas are never addressed in any meaningful way because they serve as nothing more than shock value.
which i know is no news. but. idk. its just marinating in my head on this warm saturday afternoon. i mourn the version of stolen throne that exists in my brain. where it's like. yk.... good. if you need unnecessary SA to make your fantasy dark, you're probably just not very good at writing dark fantasy.

as tempting it is to argue about how biased people are against sebastian, i do think the much more tragic takeaway from the discourse surrounding the fight polls is that everyone apparently forgot about that beautifully awkward scene where sebastian vael knocks a guy into next week. on screen. over the top punch sound effect and screen shake included.

why did it only occur to me now that starkhavens heraldry and sebastians helmet in the concept art are both supposed to be. like. a sea serpent sort of thing... i mean i had my suspicions with the heraldry but never considered the helmet is probably supposed to be the silly little things sea serpents are often depicted with on the side of their heads yk. whatever u call them.
like of course. of course... we're doing sea creature... for starkhaven.. because... the river.. and the uhh... scotland of it all... of course. or course. of course. im stupid. of course.
