There is something to be said about the shear level of contempt Sokka shows toward Wan Shi Tong, not even pretending to take his condition seriously, and instantly turning to pillaging whatever he wanted from the library the moment Wan Shi Tong leaves.
And, honestly, I think we're witnessing signs of a deep character flaw in Sokka. Sokka's initial contempt for the Kyoshi Warriors is of course worth a mention, but I'm really thinking of the Day of Black Sun. Sokka's plan failed because he had so much contempt for the Fire Nation that he couldn't imagine they would actually prepare for the possibility of invasion. Sokka lost and Azula won because he didn't take his enemies seriously and she did.
Azula, no matter how superior and confident she tried to project herself as, always took her enemies and the threat they posed seriously, and that's why she was such a dangerous antagonist.
“Ursa loved Azula, she just couldn’t show it because of Ozai/the palace/the abuse/the circumstances” only works as an argument if, once those external factors disappear, she actually starts acting like a loving mother who wants her daughter back.
But that never happens.
Ursa being “powerless” during Azula’s childhood is one thing. Fine. The comics bend over backwards to excuse her back then.
But what’s her excuse now?
She’s the mother of the Fire Lord. Her son is best friends with a literal demi-god. Before that, Zuko spent a year obsessively searching for Ursa, even before asking Ozai for help, and willingly abandoned his political duties to do it. If Ursa truly wanted Azula found, she had every resource imaginable to make it happen.
Instead? She seems perfectly comfortable living her peaceful luxurious new life while Azula disappears off to the woods, unwell and alone.
And every time Azula comes up, Ursa immediately reaches for excuses. The academy corrupted her. Ozai ruined her. Anything to avoid the more uncomfortable question: why doesn’t she actually want her back?
The comics unintentionally make this painfully obvious. Ursa loves Zuko instinctively, actively and relentlessly. With Azula, it’s guilt management at best.
Flip the situation for a sec. If Azula were Fire Lord, Ozai gone, and Zuko mentally unwell and missing, does anyone seriously think Ursa would just shrug and move on with Azula & her new family? Of course not. She’d push heaven and earth to find him. Because she loves him.
That’s the whole point. The contrast already answers the question for you.
A) sends you right back into the worst prison for mafia criminals you just escaped from, but even worse than before (enjoy being unconscious and tied up in your one room swimming pool for the next 10 years)
B) freezes you with flames burning so hot they turned into ice (< this isn't how the zero point breakthrough is explained in canon but it's the more dramatic explanation), fully knowing you were already frozen by similar ones for 8 years until, like, a month prior
C) burns you fucking alive and also undoes the last 10 years of your existence across all existing timelines. also he won't think anything about it afterwards ever (?????? like. it's not that he didn't deserve it, to be clear, but damn. 😭😭😭 middle schoolers when you just want to take over the world(s) for a bit, smdh 🙄)
D) is willing to become the boss of the most powerful mafia family in the world with a bloodstained history if it means getting the opportunity to get his hands on you and kill you beat the shit out of you. but you're lucky he likes you so you could stay on very thin ice long enough for both of you to clear things up
E) gangs up against you with all the current and future strongest people in the world, and then punches you so hard he makes you see the light of doing the right thing despite your centuries years old deep rooted hatred which singlehandedly kept you alive as an undead person
also reminder he did all that while he was only 14 years old. this is all things he did in less than a year.
this is tsuna's resume during the course of less than a year of proper mafia business.
so, you know. the next time he goes "i just want my friends and i to be safe and happy and live in peace. 🥺🥺🥺 please don't make me fight you to make it happen? 👉🏽👈🏽🥺👉🏽👈🏽🥺👉🏽👈🏽🥺"
#found this post again and... #did everyone remember that time before tsuna fight the moscas in future arc and he's like #“i'm glad there's no one inside the huge robot because that means i can do my worst” while having the cutest smile on his face #my dude... #tsuna really is scary once he understand his own power
via @ladsofsorrow24
i did not, in fact, remember that, but THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME. 😭 god, tsuna's just so normal. he's so, so normal. he doesn't even know what violence is or means, trust
Verde would never force Skull to help him with experiments. He doesn't have to. All he has to do is say Reborn would never be able to handle testing x experiment, and Skull puffs his chest out and volunteers.
hello!! just dropping by to say 'a new decima' is a fic i hold dearly; i was reminded of this because of some hard life happenings recently, but rereading it again made me smile. I love the way you wrote Sakura and how she interacts with the world around her, and her successes and failures made me feel better. thank you so much for creating it!
Hi!! So glad to hear that and I hope everything gets easier for you.
It's wild as a concept for me to hear that someone else use it as a comfort fic. When I wrote it, I was exploring the concept of stagnating as a person and isolation and being emotionally vulnerable and all that. I wish I could say I have a million chapters drafted but I don't. I do have all the thoughts and ideas put into it, if you'd like me to post it.
Though I haven't written anything in over a year, I haven't given up on this story. In fact, a few weeks ago, I was smashing my head together trying to understand what the end result of the next chapter is.
Thank you for your kind words!! I appreciate them <3
This blog really is only for me (to show my love for characters), inspiration and writing references. So I reblog mostly to put neat interpretations or headcanons that could be canon, and is within the characterisation I want to portray in my fics.
I'm not against interaction. I just don't usually cause I have nothing to say and there is no traffic on this blog.
Had some thoughts about Iroh and Azula earlier. I'm sure we all remember this scene, right?
Now, this post isn't about how Iroh was wrong for giving her that look and being suspicious and on edge around her when he hasn't seen Azula for 3 years. He actually was right to be suspicious, precisely BECAUSE of that fact. They had no contact for 3 years, and suddenly she shows up out of the blue. That would make anyone rightfully suspicious. But again, that's not what this post is about. This is about the fact that the last time Iroh saw Azula, Ozai had burned Zuko's face. Showing Iroh that he wasn't above harming his children if it suited him. Azula was alone with Ozai for 3 years. Who knows what happened to her during that time frame. And yet, Iroh shows no concern for her well being whatsoever. Doesn't ask how she's been doing all this time or anything like that. Just greets her with disdain. Like. That's just seriously chilling and fucked up. And I didn't even notice this until now. And for someone like Iroh's character, and the way how he is with Zuko? All caring and loving? That just...does not make sense as a writing choice. At all.
Why I think his relationship with Azula, or rather lack there of, is portrayed this way, is because the writers were so focused on making Azula into this badass villain who could even make Iroh of all people be on his guard around her, that they forgot that she was also his niece. Someone who was also in desperate need of help, just like Zuko was. Someone who needed love just like Zuko did. And yet we never see Iroh even attempt to extend that to her at all. The fact that even Aaron Ehasz came out and admitted that the way they wrote Iroh when it came to Azula didn't match how the portrayed his character overall further proves this theory.
I think Mai might have some serious resentment toward Ty Lee post-war
So the war ends, Zuko becomes Firelord with Mai as his girlfriend/future Firelady, Zuko's trying to completely change the direction of the country as a rookie untested Firelord, Mai has to help in all that, the Maiko relationship probably is still pretty volatile, Azula is imprisoned, depressed, and mentally ill and definitely not around to ease the burden for Mai, and Ty Lee's reaction to all of this is to run off to the Earth Kingdom to "have fun"? To abandon Mai, Zuko, the Fire Nation, even Azula in their hour of need? To leave Mai with the responsibility for everything? Just like Ty Lee abandoned Mai, Azula, and her own family to run off to the circus all those years ago? Something Mai never could do?
It really seems to me like Mai might have some cause for resentment toward Ty Lee.
We need more fics where one of Ty Lee's biggest problems with Azula is that she feels Azula favored Mai over her
Sure, Azula was a bad friend who treated Ty Lee like a soldier. Sure, Azula used fear to control Ty Lee at least once. Sure, Azula was controlling. Sure, Azula imprisoned Ty Lee. All of this is ground that has been covered before.
But there is one thing that's probably never been dealt with: Azula treated Mai as her equal way more than she treated Ty Lee. Azula largely let Mai get away with whatever she wanted. Mai benefited from Azula's friendship way more than Ty Lee ever did.
Ty Lee probably has some resentment over this. Maybe a lot. At "The Beach," the person Ty Lee was the most angry at wasn't Azula or Zuko, it was Mai. Ty Lee can excuse Azula treating her like a soldier as simply something royalty does, but she can't excuse Azula favoring Mai that way.
I would love it if this was actually something that was one of the biggest obstacles for reconciliation post-war, if this was something Azula and Ty Lee actually had to deal with.
Why Sasagawa Ryohei is considered the 'weakest' of the Vongola Decimo Guardians || A META ANALYSIS
===Spoiler Warning to the Manga of KHR.===This is the only warning you'll be getting.
First, a clarification because this came out of nowhere -- Yes, Ryohei is considered the 'weakest' of the Guardians by both Dino and Reborn, at the start of the Varia arc. This is backed by him being ranked the 5th Strongest in Namimori Middle, preceding Kusakabe (Hibari's 2nd-in-command). It is only after training with Colonello that he gains a semblance of power reliable enough to protect the familiga, besides just being 'really good at punching'. Simply put, at the level required in the series, Ryohei's set of skills - that being a really good boxer - isn't enough to qualify for a powerful guardian.
In that regard, he's even outdone by Lambo, at 5-years old, thanks to his arsenal and 10-year jump potential. How is that possible?
-- To tackle this question, we need to consider what makes a character 'strong' in Katekyo Hitman Reborn. Simple physical strength is of course a factor, but it's hardly the only one; in fact, it's one of the least accounted-for factors. This is backed by the Maximum Cannon being literally the strongest one-hit move among the Decimo Guardians, probably outdoing even Tsuna's 20% X-Burner. So, we have a character who's physically capable of outputting more raw power than his boss in one hit, yet he's still considered the weakest. This is because, the conclusion I have arrived at is: In KHR, a character's 'power' isn't dictated by their strength, but by their effectiveness.
For a simple example -- I-Pin's Mahjong Mega Bomb is possibly the one single strongest nuke in the show. But it takes it 10 whole counts until it blasts off, in which I-Pin is stationary. Is this effective? Not at all. As displayed numerous times throughout the daily life arc, it's perfectly plausible to avoid and nullify all damage from the blast by stepping out of range in time, or just throwing I-Pin away. Sure, it's a gag move, but it exists and we must take it into account.
By contrast, we have the Levi Volta. I'm going to be honest, this is one of the least interesting moves in the series to me. It's never even used again after Hayato dispatches Levi. However, we can't ignore its effectiveness. Levi Volta is a sure-hit lightning strike condensed into one spot. Unless you're someone like Hayato who just so happens to have a way to counter, or Lambo who's got immunity, this is a clearcut one-shot. It's even been said that Levi himself isn't impressive, but this move alone is what put him in the Varia Officers rank. Let me repeat that: This move, alone, made him a Varia Officer. This is how effective the Levi Volta is in what it does, without getting into more specifics.
In short, a character's power is dictated by their techniques' effectiveness and skill, as shown in two examples. This is why Hibari for that matter, who's simply strong, hardy and great at fighting, is as stupidly powerful as he is: he's simply that effective. Notice that Hibari does not have nuke-level attacks, or even building-level attacks. All he has is two Tonfa, and his skill brought him to the same level as Dino -- who also doesn't have big bombastic moves.
Back to the subject at hand -- what about Ryohei makes him 'less effective' than the rest of the Guardians?
Not to throw shade at Ryohei at all; despite being labeled the weakest, that becomes arguable once he learns to utilize the Maximum Cannon (and subsequent moves). But, he's still considered on the weaker side, and consistently doesn't win in his fights despite great showcase of strength. Ryohei's boxing skill is also immensely good; blocking isn't a big thing in boxing, fighters mostly using dodging to nullify attacks and open their opponents. In that sense, Ryohei managed to dodge a majority of the damage Koyo attempted to land, while still getting deliberately grazed to charge his Sunlight Bangle. This takes inhuman amount of skill, which Ryohei is able to showcase, albeit with a Cambio Forma. Safe to say, he's easily one of the world's greatest boxers-- in sheer skill alone. He's also the well-reliable Sun Guardian, as shown 10-years later.
But Boxing in general is not a great choice for martial arts. While popular, it is subpar, as judged by several real-life martial arts experts. Him sticking to Boxing exclusively makes him incredibly good at what he does, but limits him in that sense too. Moreover, there is one common denominator for many characters in the series -- and that's, the use of Weapons.
Reborn is the most classic hitman in the series, modeled after the stereotype of Italian mafia. Therefore, he's a weapons expert. But it doesn't stop there: Gokudera using dynamite, Yamamoto learning swordsmanship, Hibari's tonfa -- even Tsuna uses a weapon: while the gloves by themselves aren't 'weapons', the ability they bestow definitely is. How do you expect to throw hands with a guy that shoots fire??
In the weapons department, Ryohei only has his fists. And that already places him at a disadvantageous point. While he's on-paper extremely skilled at what he does, his skill level is compromised by virtue of lack of weapon in the series.
To make a quick run-down of the other pure-martial artists in the series for comparison (almost all of which Ryohei outdoes), we have:
I-Pin and Fon, who use Gyoza Kenpo, a form of martial arts incorporating garlic to disrupt the enemy's nerves.
Joshima Ken, while not a 'martial artist', he is equipped with his fangs to grant him animal abilities and traits.
Lancia, who has a giant steel ball.
Lussuria, who not only has insanely quick movement, but also a metal knee - which by itself is a weapon.
Zakuro, technically, who just becomes a T-Rex and attacks with heat and Storm Flames anyway.
All of these guys have something extra going on for them besides just raw power. Ryohei doesn't have that. Ryohei relies solely on his skills as a boxer, and the principle taught to him by Colonello, to channel the power of his cells. Maximum Cannon is essentially a technique, but it's still just raw strength -- and, it's not even that reliable; requiring a very long recharge time to even utilize at maximum strength. His fighting style subtly changes to suit the Sun Flames' attributes eventually, but in the end it's still a principle that actively requires Ryohei risk himself, oftentimes gravely.
The other reason I feel that is relevant, is the author's emphasis on the Sun Flame being 'not as strong' as the rest of the flames. At least, not by itself.
The maximum healing capacity of the Sun Flames is demonstrated in Daisy, which can regenerate instantly like a lizard. I personally was amazed that this is what they pulled, only to later have my impression thwarted in accounts of the other Millefiore Guardians having even more extreme applications to their Flames. Basically, Daisy is presented to us as the first opponent fought against, because - to be inferred narratively - they are the weakest of the Six Funeral Wreaths. And it just so happens that Ryohei also has this flame, albeit with a different, much more self-destructive tendency. It's worth noting, in terms of effectiveness - Daisy outclasses Ryohei by a landslide, too (in my personal analysis, Daisy is the epitome of Sun Flames effectiveness).
Sun Flames, either through its healing properties, attribution to Irie Shoichi or Gokudera's use, is narratively told to be 'the support flame'. Which means, it's hard-pressed to find any attacks that encompass pure Sun Flame energy. In fact -- Ryohei is literally the only character in the series to even do that.
Ryohei definitely received the short end of the stick, but by no means is he actually 'weak'. As a potential Hitman he's definitely the least efficient among the Guardians, that's for sure. But that's mostly because of the series' focus and variety in its power system.
That said -- KHR is a series with normal humans. Remember that there's not a single person in all of KHR (except Daisy and his stupid hacks) that can tank a Maximum Cannon. So in terms of raw physicality, Ryohei is at the top of the series' list. Does that help him in fights? ...Unfortunately, not so much.
I find it interesting that the strongest Guardian, is actually the weakest; as 'power' is established to be 'effectiveness', and not strength.
That is all for this analysis,
You're all incredible.
Especially if you actually read all of that like, holy shit.
It's just occurred to me that lambo probably thinks reborn is actually two years old.
I can't imagine anyone has actually sat him down and explained to him that reborn is actually an adult who just so happens to look like a child and the details of the arcobaleno curse, and even if they did, he wouldn't have internalised something like that and adjusted his behaviour accordingly. He's five. All he's seeing is a two year old getting respect and being treated like an 'equal' because he's so strong and capable even when he's tiny and younger than him.
That'd explain so much about him... He thinks he can do all those things too because he's bigger and older, he just needs to prove himself, and he doesn't understand why reborn can go where he pleases and do what he wants and he can't so he runs away to follow him. He's probably mimicking what he sees of Reborn's behaviours too, with no context or (any real) self control (the aggression, the nicknames, the weapon pulling, the superiority) in pursuit of whatever makes him worthy of good treatment respect. And given what we know of his home life... Yeah, I can see a little kid being so frustrated with the unfairness of it and so desperate for attention that he does something extreme.
And that's not even touching on the fact that he activated his flames as a 5yo MAX. No wonder he ran away and is so obsessed with reborn and his perceived freedom.
Like, it's funny if lambo goes through the whole show fully believing reborn is two years old and no one realises to correct him on it, but at the same time that's so incorrect and so unfair to him.
She can, she just thinks she's unlovable and therefore there's no way for her to keep people around her except through fear. But deep down, she knows a difference between fear and love and wishes she could could use the latter, which is why this subject keeps triggering her so much.
In general, when people first meet Zuko and Azula, they like Zuko much better. They project whatever they want to see onto him, while Azula is a lot off-putting, to say the least.
But over the long term, they generally find themselves liking Azula much better. Why? They find that Zuko is willing to betray and screw them over at the slightest opportunity for no reason whatsoever, while Azula behaves consistently and rationally, actually does what she's supposed to, and, surprisingly, mostly remains true to her word. Not to mention they find her "off-putting" nature is a side effect of her being awesome, capable, and a girl.
The only real exceptions to this trend are Iroh and Ursa, who among other things are massive misogynists who are eternally pissed about Azula overshadowing their golden boy. Essentially everyone else went through the cycle of liking Zuko and disliking Azula, before realizing that Zuko is a loser and Azula is awesome.
The only thing different about Mai is she finds Zuko being a pathetic loser kind of attractive.
The best way of quantifying the difference in motivation between Zuko and Azula
If Zuko was offered a gift-wrapped opportunity to conquer an important Earth Kingdom fortress for the Fire Nation, requiring only some inconvenience and personal risk on his part, he'd only do it if he thought doing it might impress his father and help Zuko regain favor with him.
If Azula was offered a gift-wrapped opportunity to conquer an important Earth Kingdom fortress for the Fire Nation, requiring only some inconvenience and personal risk on her part, she'd do it in an instant even if she thought Ozai wouldn't be the slightest bit impressed by it.
It's not that Zuko isn't an imperialist to the bone too, it's that it doesn't matter to him at all whether the Fire Nation wins the war. The Fire Nation and the rest of the world could burn for all he cares, as long as he gets his destiny, his throne, and his father's approval.
And it's not that Azula doesn't want to desperately earn and retain her father's approval, it's just that she also cares very deeply about whether the Fire Nation wins the war. Her duty, as princess, is to lead the Fire Nation to victory, and she intends to do her duty.
Why a lot of people ideas or fanfictions end up with her living a simple life
I saw a lot of people into this idea
For me i don't like it, azula is an Ambitious person like zuko she will always strive for more, she doesn't need to lose her ambitions to be redeemed, she can just find Another way to make her dreams and desires come true
Azula wants to be loved but also she want to be remebered and have a good impact on the world
I beleive azula having no ambitions will strip her a lot of her personality and will make her character arc Unfinished
I have more to say but i don't want to talk to much
I understand your point, but part of the issue is that getting as far she can from her awful, toxic family would objectively be great for her. Another thing to keep in mind is that "ambition" doesn't necessarily need to mean political power. It could mean Azula being the very best blacksmith she could be, the very best artist she could be, the wealthiest merchant she could be, etc.
