This is an Azula/atla blog (obviously), although I post and reblog other things too. I've been playing the Legend of Heroes series lately, so I may make posts about that soon. Just had a thought about this line. After Azula says this, Zuko doesn't say anything to try and deny it. Which is what you would expect him to do since what she's saying is technically an insult to his favorite person in the world. The fact that he says nothing says one of two things:

Zuko himself thinks that Azula is a monster, and thus sees nothing wrong with what she just said.

He doesn't say anything because from what he can remember about Ursa and Azula before their mother disappeared, they never had a positive interaction between each other, and that Ursa always treated Azula differently. So regardless of whether or not Ursa actually said that to Azula, her actions towards her made that way of thinking perfectly clear.

Also worth noting that absolutely nothing in canon says that Azula's way of thinking about her mother is wrong. I know that people like to use the mirror scene as proof, but here's the thing about that: it's a hallucination of Ursa. An image from Azula's mind, that is saying things that Azula wants to hear in that moment, things that she wishes her mother had said to her back when she was a child. Positive reinforcement that she always gave to Zuko no matter what he did. Particularly the "I love you, Azula. I do" part. Because out of everything else, Azula desperately wanted her mother to love her. And she never felt that she did.

King Alfred the Great’s lost remains 'found under car park', TV show researchers say

The long-lost remains of King Alfred the Great have been found buried under a car park, investigators claim.

Alfred died in 899, and his bones were repeatedly moved. He was buried in Winchester Cathedral until 1110, when his remains were moved to Winchester's Hyde Abbey, where they were interred before the high altar between the bodies of his wife and son. The abbey was demolished after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539, and the place was left in ruins. In 1866, during construction of a workhouse on the site, the English antiquarian John Mellor excavated the area, found what he thought were Alfred's bones and had them reburied at nearby St. Bartholemew’s Church. But in 2013, when archaeologists exhumed and carbon-dated the bones from St. Bartholomew’s churchyard, they proved to date from over 200 years after Alfred’s death - sparking Graham's interest and search. He said: "Whoever’s bones they were, they weren’t Alfred’s. So, I decided to discover what happened to them. "The quest has taken me 13 years.”

not seeing a lot of people on here talking about ICE murdering another man yesterday. His name was Lorenzo Salgado Arajou. He was a Mexican man living in Huston Texas. He was killed at age 52 and lived the past 35 years here in the USA, and was in the process of obtaining a work permit. He was shot and killed during a traffic stop that ICE claims was part of a targeted operation, and claimed he was “weaponizing his vehicle”- the same claim ICE agents made when they shot and murdered Renee Good.

During the stop, Lorenzo had 3 coworkers with him in his truck who have all been taken into ICE custody.

His family described Lorenzo as a hardworking family man who didn’t deserve to be killed. All he wanted was to provide for his wife and see his sons become great people. His eldest son recognized his father by his cries and pleas when trying to identify who the victim was.

The Salgado Araujo family has set up a gofundme to help with funeral and legal costs, and to help keep their family supported since Lorenzo was the sole provider.

I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT AZULA AND URSA I CAN’T FIND THE ANSWER TO?

AT WHAT POINT DID AZULA KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT WHY HER MOTHER LEFT?

There has been so much discourse about what affect Ursa had on Azula, and a lot of it boils down to two very different scenes:

I have read so many theories about how Azula gets from her mindset in The Beach to the one she seems to have in the finale, and I have my own theory about what changed in between:

Did Azula learn the truth about her mother’s banishment too?

We know Zuko was in the dark about exactly what happened when Ursa disappeared. I think that he always had some hope that she was still alive, but probably thought it was more likely she was dead. At least that’s how I interpret this dream:

But what did Azula think? I always had the impression that Azula didn’t think Ursa was dead, but that she simply left. Just took off like any deadbeat parent would, because she was tired of the family. And that Azula's belief that her mother didn’t love her was informed by the belief she had left them of her own free will.

Analyzing all of Azula’s scenes more closely . . . I still kind of get that impression, but I have to admit there’s no actual evidence to back it up. At most, I can say that Azula never says or does anything to suggest she thinks her mom died, in my opinion.

And my theory about Azula’s seeming change in attitude, is that it would make sense if she had recently found out that her mother had been forced to leave.

If I could pick one conversation scene to add to the show, it would be what Ozai and Azula said to each other right after the Day of Black Sun invasion? How did Azula react to the news that Zuko had gone completely rogue and vowed to join the Avatar? And what did Ozai do to Azula, to punish her for lying about the Avatar’s death? I just can’t imagine him ever letting that slide.

It’s easy to imagine Azula reporting after the battle to say there’d been a “shocking surprise,” and the Avatar had miraculously turned up alive with the invasion force. Zuko must have been a fraud this whole time! Only for Ozai to reveal what Zuko had already ratted them both out. Or, if he really wanted to mentally punish her, I could see Ozai pretending to be surprised by the news; only to make some off-hand and vaguely threatening comments that implied Zuko might have told him the truth already, just to make Azula scared and uncertain. Definitely something his trifling ass would do.

But getting back on topic, I think there is a very good chance that at about this time in the show, Ozai might have also told Azula the truth about why Ursa was gone. That they had both killed Azulon and he’d banished her on pain of death. With Zuko now on the Avatar’s side, there is an almost certain chance that Azula will be going after him eventually; Ozai would have to consider the possibility that Zuko might tell her what he’d learned if he had a chance. Better that Azula hear his version of events first, so he can gauge her reaction and make sure it won’t be a problem.

If Azula didn’t already know the truth, then it could hit her already fragile psyche like an angry Komodo rhino. And it might recontextualize a lot of the things she thought were true about her mother.

I feel like Azula has a kind of fatalistic view of relationships; that people tend to fail you if you let them. And I feel like after Ursa “ran out” on the family, Azula probably tried to compartmentalize her grief by telling herself that it was inevitable. That her mother hated her, so their relationship was always going to end badly; it couldn’t have gone any other way.

But if she were to learn the truth, that her mother had been forced to leave, well that might cause her to realize that things didn’t have to end as badly as they had between her and Ursa. They could have gone another way.

And realizing that might actually have hurt even more!

So, that’s my two cents on the Azula-Ursa discourse. Can anyone think of any actual evidence for how much of the truth Azula knew, and at what point she knew it? I’m sincerely asking because I couldn’t find anything!

I don't want to dismiss your theory, as it is interesting and has good writing potential, but I think it is more simple than that.

When Azula "sees" her mom it's a hallucination, it's what she wants to hear. At the same time, Azula rejects it, she believes she is a monster, unlovable. She believes her mom sees her as a monster, so the hallucination is a torture, just lying about love - just like Ozai did earlier in the finale.

Azula doesn't believe people love her, or at least, that their love in conditional. Look at her relationships. Iroh shown to be negative towards her, Zuko shown to be hostile towards her and resents her "stealing" of his rightful place. Mai and Ty Lee, the only friends we know of, betray her when someone else holds more value for them. This one reenforces her conditional views of love: if I had been more valuable they would've loved me more so I need to be more perfect. Ozai is an obviously conditional father.

Ursa is only ever shown with Azula in negative contexts; harsh punishment contrasted with the lighter ones given to Zuko, her mom literally talking behind her back, sharing the news of cousin's death and her uncle's refusal to punish the city for it.

So while Azula may have learned of her mom's leaving and it may have had an impact what the show shows us is that isn't the cause of her issues. I don't think the truth would've fixed her relationship with her mother because it's shown only to be negative. Zuko gets positive punishment, explains why he is wrong by Ursa, Azula gets a stern talking too. Ursa questions what is wrong with her while she is in earshot.

This is easily one of the worst relationships shown for Azula. Her friends like her to some extent as shown various times throughout the show, they just like one another and Zuko more. Iroh doesn't like her and thinks she should go down, in addition to the implied view that she should be more "princess" like (the doll), but even then there is an honesty there, we know the two don't see eye-to-eye. She doesn't expect it from him. Ozai may have been a false love and he revealed this with his phoenix king actions but even that gave more positive feelings to Azula than Ursa did.

So we all like to joke about Zuko’s propensity for jumping off of tall things to land on things or people that are clearly too far away and how he obviously has no sense of self-preservation but has anyone considered the far more likely explanation that our boy just has little to no depth perception?

Do you think Azula haters think Zuko and Iroh have “more of a right to be evil” because of their backstories then Azula who they can’t empathize with.

Nope, it's as simple as "half of them haven't rewatched the show in years" and the other half just have stan-mind of "I like this character therefore they're good, I don't like that character therefore they're bad."

They're attached to Iroh and Zuko, so they don't even notice that Zuko played as big a role as Azula in supporting war, genocide and imperialism, and that Iroh's actions were worse than both of them combined on the simple basis of "he had more time to be awful." They're not attached to Azula, so they don't notice she has quite a bit of tragedy to her character, just like them.

Also Azula and Zuko are a clear case of "same writting, different font" so it always amuses and perplexes me to see how bizarre the discourse around them is.
