Santos and Robby have a very strange dynamic right now that I’m hoping is intentional. For whatever reason (I have concepts of an idea, that’s another day’s post) Robby has extraordinary faith in Santos’ ability to handle herself as a doctor. She’s one of the only staff members he doesn’t tell Dana that he’s worried will crash and burn without him there, he’s been bantering with her more than some of the other characters, and she’s one of the only people who hasn’t made her way onto his shitlist all day.
The problem is that, while she is a good doctor (even McKay considers her to be uniquely skilled at her own niche, sniffing out weird stuff), she’s actively not handling this environment well at all. She’s being actively triggered by Langdon’s presence among the many other interpersonal and personal issues giving her grief right now. She arguably should have been checked for fighting with Langdon in front of a patient (though I do agree with Al Hashimi putting the question onto Langdon given that he’s her superior). Basically she’s actively not well and for some reason Robby’s view of her as a Good Doctor as he describes her to Al Hashimi seems like it’s leading him to disregard anything that doesn’t fit that image. I normally wouldn’t necessarily expect him to notice Santos going through it if he hadn’t been on pretty much every woman in the ER’s ass for the way their mental health and personal decisions were potentially worming their way into the workplace.
So Robby isn’t giving Santos any grief, Santos hasn’t really been exposed to Robby’s, for lack of a better word, temper tantrums all day. She’s got a very idealized view him as “the authority figure who believed me,” regardless of the fact that he’s responsible for maybe what is so triggering for her about Langdon (the fact that he’s another man who didn’t face consequences). I can’t help but imagine that if she had seen or been on the other end of Robby’s hissy fit at Mohan she would have a lot less faith in him and his ability to look out for his subordinates
TLDR… Robby and Santos have this crazy idealized view of each other where everything that doesn’t align with that image (Good Boss and Good Doctor) both falls away but also isn’t really present in their dynamic…. Like Robby genuinely is a good boss to Santos and Santos hasn’t given Robby any insight to how close she is to the proverbial edge

i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors
“red and green are opposites 🥰” cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a child’s finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit
ok i can’t explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like
with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, don’t distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing
is it too much to ask
gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that
cohesive but still contrasting
This kind of talks about color and composition
This is a bit about landscape specifically
Values & composition
Contrast in composition
Balance in colors & values
This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones
Cohesion within compositions/lighting
"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!
This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!
Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process
With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)
thanks this is super helpful! /gen
If you'd like 2 Print books that I absolutely reccomend to every visual artist regardless of Media, Color and Light and Imaginative Realism by James Gurney are basically religious texts for artists, even the 3-D people because his understanding and explanation of how light and form work is that damn good.
If you're wondering about Mr. Gurney's chops:
James Gurney is the Dinotopia Guy (that link includes his Dinotopia books, prints and online classes too)
