For those curious, the "Leizi is trans" idea comes from this scene, where Leizi startles at being questioned on her gender (and only on being questioned on her gender) during a perfunctory questioning. It's a very particularly written scene that feels like it has little reason to be written like that.
After seeing this, I was like "huh, okay" and read back over all the Leizi content we'd gotten so far, and found that her module is written weird:
In younger years, was Lei Fa assiduously studied, scriptures and records committed to heart.
Then when called, bolts did not heed; when beckoned, bolts did not come.
In teenage years, progress was devoted day and night, and began awareness words lay outside of lines, within speech laid invisible speech.
A hand waved for arcs to spark, crackling to the ears.
At twenty and two, once daily, were chanted mnemonic and creed to satisfaction.
Lightning could be drawn, thunder could be righted.
Approaching thirty, the Way was nature, essences mighty yet held concealed.
Dispelled was malice and rid was evil, unpardoned were the guilty.
Spake the teacher: "Satisfactory."
Thereupon was granted a fine pair of crystals, with limpid lightning filled, in pallid thunder coated, as though the sense it would shatter and roar.
Spake the teacher: "As Minister of the Central Judicial Office, this ceremony is held. Now I grant thee these crystals, and thou shalt name them."
Young and ambitious were thoughts, diligent in studied creed, only wishing to command the five thunders, to cower the wicked.
Yet sensed was the realm's boundlessness, the night endless still, levin rolling, a need to notice all the world's difficulties.
Thus she replied: "All the Thunderlight."
This is a remarkable amount of effort put into not including any pronouns (not even I/me, which would be the logical choice based on the mandarin chinese original text) up until the very end, where Leizi has reached her idealized form. Which could mean nothing, of course, but I'm like, huh.
These things, combined with the fact that she has a much smaller chest than nearly every other adult woman in the cast and exclusively wears high-collared shirts or chokers makes me feel like. Maybe I'm onto something here? I have no idea! But I'm choosing to believe this is the intended read until otherwise contradicted.
