In the late 60s, the Floyd tasked technical engineer Bernard Speight at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios with building the Azimuth Co-ordinator. This rudimentary, but revolutionary, bit of equipment, with Bakelite knobs and a collection of rheostat pan-pots, was operated during concerts by Richard Wright. As he operated the joysticks, the source of the sound moved from speaker to speaker around the auditorium. The first model was stolen, but here's a picture of the replacement:
