Flemish artist Gustave van de Woestyne, Carte’s Neo-Realist paintings of farmers and miners are dark and expressive. He employs the figure symbolically, both highlighting the struggles of the working class and conveying fantastical narratives. Born on December 8, 1886 in Mons, Belgium, Carte apprenticed to the studio of painter Frantz Depooter for 14 years, and received his formal training at the Academy of Mons and Brussels.
