Old vs. New| Wrath vs. Mercy
Something else I’ve been working on is the characteristics of God we see in the Old Testament vs. what we see in the New Testament. Many Christians have struggles with this, myself included.
It is hard see how God can be so vengeful in the old testament but claim to live by love and mercy in the new testament. Here is what I have determined for myself after a bit of research, prayer, and thought.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8
That sentiment is repeated over and over through out the bible. God never changes.. the God that we know in the old testament is the same God today. So how to we come to terms with the fact that God struck down entire kingdoms and punished his own sons and daughters?
First, God has always given us a choice. He gave the Israelites plenty of rules to follow (trust me I just finished reading all the fun stuff) and yet they still chose to disobey him. He also always gave warning to the enemy during their journey to Canaan. Many times in the bible the word “wrath” is seen. What we don’t see today is that the words translated from Hebrew to “wrath” actually mean something quite different. In many instances the Hebrew counterparts mean worried, sorrow, or passion. God has always had us in his heart. He has our best interest at hand and always has. Though we may not agree with it, the reason he did those things in the old testament was to protect us from sin.
Still, as humans we may not fully understand his sense of justice but we cannot. We are sinners. He is the only one that has the power to judge. In Job we learn a lot about God’s justice never being black and white.
As far as the New Testament goes.. Jesus came down to show us the other side. He says, “if you have seen me, you have seen my father.” John 14:9
Jesus came down to reveal the full character of God. He reveals the Mercy that the Lord has for us. God sent down his only son so that we may have salvation. He saw that the world will never be perfect, we were born into sin, and that wasn’t good enough for him. He wanted to give us a LIFETIME of chances. So that we can mess up and sin again and again yet he constantly forgives us. He gives us 80+ years to straighten up and give him our heart. That is pretty damn loving if you ask me.
There you have it. A little insight for today. It’s tough to come to terms with the fact that we have no control over God. He is who He is and just as he loves us for who we are we have to accept it. I post this because for a long time I was ignoring it but I realized that if I want to further my relationship with the Father I need to fully understand the entire journey of His relationship with us.
Again, thanks for listening. I invite messages/comments to discuss this further! I’d love to hear any opinions/insight.
Thanks,
Jess
