You know what? This price increase really had me thinking about what we’re even paying for with a FIRST membership. Is it worth the price? What are we really getting?

If you go onto rooster teeth and go to Series > FIRST Exclusives, this is the list you get:

That’s 31 shows. Okay, pretty decent. However… 10 of these are post shows, so usually only add 10-20 minutes to their original episode (worth noting that 5 of those post shows are inactive). I’m not sure if that makes FIRST worth it, but at least theres still 21 more exclusive shows to choose from! But wait a second…?

Day 5: 2016 – this series is one season long and very good, but it was also only recently re-added to the site after being broadcasted on a TV network… so it’s not at all fair to say this is a FIRST exclusive.

That’s a total of 14 inactive FIRST exclusives. Added with the Post Shows, that’s 24 FIRST exclusives. I almost counted The Woods as a good FIRST exclusive – but that’s not even exclusive – only the behind the scenes is? I’m unsure why this is even listed in the FIRST series categories… it definitely shouldn’t be so… 25 exclusives (out of a total of 31) that IN MY OPINION aren’t worth the fee.

So what does that leave us?

6 others in the FIRST series: there’s Backwardz Compatible, Crunch Time, Theatre Mode, CRWBY & RWBY Rewind (worth noting they’re only updated during RWBY seasons), and Lazer Team (yeah, obviously inactive but it’s a movie so I’d consider it one of the FIRST perks). 

There’s also RT Docs, which is for some reason not listed anywhere on the series list. The same goes for Achievement Haunter – all except the pilot are exclusive, but the series itself isn’t marked as exclusive? So there’s a very good chance I’m missing a few other FIRST exclusives on this list (as well as extra episodes like behind the scenes of some stuff?). Their websites really weird, man. (EDIT: to add hardcore tabletop, weird place, and arizona circle - which again, isn’t listed in their fucking series list… their website isn’t even organized good)

That’s 5-7 (with docs and haunter) current and active shows, and 5 active post shows. That’s all FIRST gets you content-wise. 

In addition to that - you get access to live streams (which is the best part of first imo), and “ad-free” watching on the site, even though they shove ad reads down your throat at every second… it’s even started in non-podcast shows like AHWU). FIRST also gets you early access to all their content - but only 1-7 days earlier than the public. You also get a small discount at the RT store and discounted shipping prices. And to top it all off - they raised their annual price from 35$ to 60$, without really changing any of the perks or giving us a reason except to “ensure that we can keep making cool stuff for our awesome community“, or as to why now, all of the sudden, they’re almost doubling their prices.

But hey - at least you’ll get a cool star next to your name whenever you comment on their site.

And you know what? I knew there wasn’t that many perks to their content before but I genuinely wanted to support them more directly and was happily giving them my money… but I cannot justify that big of a price jump for honestly such little content that isn’t free for the public. And it’s honestly just such a shame - i spent my teens watching them, and as soon as I got my first min wage job I was so excited to finally be able to support them through FIRST.

And look, I get it - a company grows, they have more employees to pay and more shows to fund and need more money… I get that. But for the overall quantity and quality of their content AND their website itself is not worth 6$ a month.

And I wish I was angry about this, but in all honesty - im just genuinely disappointed in them; their inability to spread the upcoming changes (i only received 2 emails today, one of which was incorrect - i didnt even know matt posted a journal weeks ago.. who even checks that?); and most of all: their lack of response to their community every single time they fuck up.

As someone who was following this story from the beginninig I want to add some things.

1. Matt’s post was made on July 26th. And usually Matt tweets about it. Did he do it this time? No. Actually no one did. Personally I found out about it from reddit.

2. Just a week before on SDCC they said that Haunter and Arizona Circle WON’T be FIRST EXCLUSIVE. Meaming everyone will be able to watch it a week later. (Do you remember how AC was made? From NEW FIRST members. They literally said “we need x amount of new FIRST members, go!”)

3. Following days I was hoping that they’ll mention this on RT Podcast. But when someone in chat asked about it they addressed it by saying that the RT Podcast is not the “customer service podcast”. Sorry, what?

4. When something is happening (for example RTX, sale, new game, ect.) you see banners about it all over the website. You see them tweet about it everyday. They do clips before videos. This situation? NOTHING. And let me add that we’re talking about MONEY. Money that their community pays them. This is not something you can just ignore.

5. Talking about ignoring.When something controversial happens with RT they just IGNORE it. They wait until people will forget about it and then post some apology. I don’t think people will forget about their money. (Especially knowing that a lot of people just like me are students or in school or just don’t have a job.)

6. Looking at the list of perks I was confused. It was nothing new. I was thinking that they would explain what are money for. Maybe it’s to fix website/apps, pay their animators, for new shows…nope. They didn’t say it at all.

7. Talking about website and apps, I want to say that they are trash. App that crashes during live stream 4-7 times, downloads that are barely working, it’s confusing in general. They forgot about xbox app, don’t have ps4 one, People on ipad only can use mobile one. This is not convenient in any way. Website. To find recent videos on main page you have to scroll, because first you see big ass banner for something, then originals, then shop, then live streams and WOW YOU FOUND NEW EPISODES! Playlists suck. Website log me out several times a week. I can’t watch livestream from website because it’s buffering every 5-10 second. Even watching videos, one can be fine, second one crashes or starts buffering. It’s not usable.

8. OP did a good job showing all exclusives. I just want to add that let’s be honest. Most people watch only RT/AH/FH. But they put SO MUCH on their website, that I get lost everytime. Some exclusive stuff didn’t work out for some people. KF videos appear ton website after YT for some reason,just like most of CC’s videos and IG. So this DAY before shit is worthless if you watch something besides RT/AH/FH.

9. Speaking of others. Let’s all remember that SP7 is barely alive, Cow Chop is ending this year. And FIRST never really helped them. So what’ the point of staying? You can support CC just like KF on patreon.

10. International fans and how much RT “loves” us. - RTX. They closed RTX London and RTX Sydney. I know that RTX Austin is the main one, but not many people from around the world can travel so far, it’s very expensive. (Also for me I need  us visa that you can barely get/) But hey, they stream RTX every year, right? NOT THIS YEAR. They didn’t find streaming partner. But they literally cancelled RTX London to make Austin one better tho. So ??? Okay, they said we’ll record some panels. Okay, that’s something. BUT HEY! Almost everything was uploaded MONTH after RTX. And we still don’t know where is Greg’s and Michael’s panel, just fyi. - Stores. Lovely international store. Which are basically dead. Wow, thanks a lot? But you can get all new stuff in US one! Yes, I can! I could actually. Shipping was 10-13$. Now international shipping is 20-23$. And that’s without custom charges for some countries.So I’m not sure that those 5% will help. (Their t-shirt are 25$. And plus 23$ shipping. Seriously?) - Live streams. It’s one of the perks. And it’s a good one. But as international fan, I can only watch Off Topic. Other stuff is in the middle of the night. And a lot of people can understand me.

In conclusion, RT mostly cares about it’s US fan base, Intertnational fans are nothing. That’s a known fact. I just want to say, that the way they addressed this situation is complete shit. Because they didn’t address it at all. Sending 2 emails (because first one was misleading af) is making them look like clowns. And half of the people didn’t get emails at all. (I checked my settings months ago but still don’t get anything from them.) People shouldn’t get email ON THE DAY when you changed prices. Do it a week or few days before, but not after.

I’m glad to see backlash. I watch it’s happening for almost 3 weeks.I want to see RT try and get out of this one. They won’t. They need to talk about it. They need to explain why prices are doubled. Why people are losing grandfathered prices.I understand it’s a business, but they have social media to let people know about changes.

This whole year is a shit show for RT. They did it to themselves. And without explainig yourselves they won’t go far. Already people are cancelling their renewals. It’s just not worth it. When you can watch 80% of their stuff on Youtube it’s not exclusive at all. To be excluse or try and compair yourselves to HBO and Netflix (that they did btw) you need more ONLY exclusice shows, not 2 every 6 months. You need apps, because not everyone use websites. You need quality, which is sometimes there. You can’t call let’s play that I can watch only a day earlier exclusive content. It’s not.

I’m disappointed. Very disappointed. Doing things this way only making people lose trust in them. They always talked about community in such a good way, but for the last year they just don’t care abut community. They really don’t. So good luck to them trying to fix this, I doubt it’ll happen.

P.S. “Gold star by your profile name” is not a perk. This gold star doesn’t do shit for me. So you can take it and shove it up your ass, RT.
