I approve of this summary
In just a little under 3 days, we’ve already reached the 1,000,000 mark!
There’s very little for me to say other than thank you to all of you. It’s been a blast to see everyone react so overwhelmingly positive to all the work we’ve put into one video for the past two years.
Thank you to all the fan artists, fan theorists, cosplayers, .gif makers, commenters, viewers and everyone in between.
On behalf of me and the team, we hope to deliver more quality content to all of you before too long and sincerely thank all of you very much for being on this journey with us.
I’VE BEEN HELLBENT BABY
I noticed that there was less of a gap between the first video and the second compared to the 2 year gap before hellbent. Was this because the video was longer, or was life getting in the way, or was it the new character models? Also, should we expect a similar gap till the next video? Hellbent was worth the wait and I'm sure the next video will be the same! Great work all around!! ~ A Curious Fan
Is it post mortem already? Here we go then!
We put a lot of focus into improving the overall quality of the video this time around and tried a looooot of new things, things we didn’t even anticipate trying honestly. We knew we wanted to have a proper storyboarding phase and really push the angles of shots especially since from here on out there will be a good deal of conflict and things need to be dynamic.
Unfortunately that meant more backgrounds. I was reeling at the amount of backgrounds in Freaking Out and Hellbent turned out to be DOUBLE that workload. Double the bgs. Double the shots, many with multiple characters. @heilos usually works on additional assets/ shot set up and I on backgrounds. We ended up having to combine workloads to make a proper dent in them because both of us began experiencing periodic burnout and were bottle-necking the production somewhat. Once @mysterybensmysteryblog has shots that boy’s pretty freaking dynamite.
Please note that’s putting things veeery simply. There’s a lot of life nuances that typically get in the way as well, such as freelance, and getting a new job. I had to let the bg artist who’d been helping me since Mystery Skulls: Ghost go which caused me an inexplicable amount of mental turmoil the beginning of this year. While they’re not part of the core group literally everyone on that special thanks list is my hero! They provided just enough to keep me going during a tough time.
My initial goal is usually and will probably continue to be within a year of starting production, so ideally it wont take another 2 years. I will try to do everything I can to prevent this but in the end this IS a passion project and we’d rather release something we feel we can be proud of!
Artsy couldn’t have summed it up better. We won’t go into the super nitty gritty, but there were A LOT of bumps in the road on top of the multiple burn out moments while trying to finish this thing either from events out of our control or from experimenting with tons of new things on the production that we had to learn on the fly/ trial and error.
Artsy was my rock this entire time as we were in work hangouts almost every day talking and working with each other piece by piece on production assignments, be it props, backgrounds, animation set up, tweaking existing animation, critique/feedback on what was turned in ect ect. Our team is only made up of 4-5 main active people, and about 4-5 additional helpers that aren’t always available throughout production due to jobs, life, other projects ect ect., but were extremely helpful when we were able to have them on assignments. We were also so fortunate to have our special guest animator Vivzipop help near the end on one very large shot.
This is first and foremost an incredibly elaborate passion project that comes out of what free time we have. The goal would be to not take another two years while still keeping up quality, but we’ll have to see how things go in taking what we learned on this production and streamlining things to go a bit smoother hopefully.
We decided to post high quality versions of the illustration in commemoration of the million view milestone. we got a few requests to make them wallpapers! thank you guys so much for all your support and we hope you enjoy!
Duet -
Duet is the owner of Tome Tomb, the used book and comic store where Vivi works. Despite a rather deadpan way of speaking, Duet can be quite an enthusiastic conversationalist and is surprisingly easy to get along with. Though Vivi has attempted to learn more about her boss, Duet has remained largely a mystery.
Chloe-
Chloe is Vivi’s coworker at Tome Tomb. A young enthusiast of obscure anime from the 90s, she tends to show up to work in full cosplay. While she claims she is dressing up to advertise for the shop, no one really believes her. She has begged Vivi multiple times to join her paranormal investigations, though Vivi always turned her down due to concerns about her not being old enough. It didn’t help that Chloe’s main interest in joining the group seemed to revolve around “catching me an undead boyfriend”. While she and Vivi get along for the most part, Chloe demonstrates some resentment from time to time.
Pepper Family
So, on our 2 million views mark for Freaking Out, here’s the full version of the Pepper Family Photo as seen on Arthur’s screen.
Mr. And Mrs. Pepper had been known about for a bit, and while their kids had been mentioned before, they were both invisible and nameless.
I may have to make a post later where I work up proper front views of the girls, but I can at the very least name them and show you their original concept art (the designs have changed quite a bit since then).
Refer to @artsyfeathersartsyblog‘s more recent drawing of them to get a better idea of their clothing.
(Based on the top picture)
The one on Lewis’s shoulder = Paprika
The one under the table = Cayenne
The one in the front = Belle
Arthur’s pet hamster - Galahad (While that is his “legal” name, he is more commonly referred to as “Galaham”)
Galahad was born with a condition that left his lower half paralyzed. With Arthur’s mechanical know-how, he built the little guy some fancy new wheels that allowed him to move about to a surprising degree.
Arthur regards him to be his tiny assistant, though his aptitude at mechanics and robotics are questionable (at best). He doesn’t let that get in his way though and will tinker with random objects when no one else is looking.
Whenever something just randomly falls apart at Kingsmens Mechanics, odds are you’ll find Galaham nearby with cheeks stuffed with screws and bolts.
Arthur’s Uncle, Lance - Owner and head mechanic at “Kingsmen Mechanics”
Uncle Lance may seem a bit gruff at first but he can be pretty protective of his nephew and his friends. He doesn’t much understand Arthur’s more… robot-y tinkerings or all this “Paranormal Investigation” stuff his buddies keep going on about, he prefers to not mixed up in all that weird stuff.
Rumor has it that Uncle Lance used to be a Pro-Wrestler when he was younger, though he will furiously deny it. That doesn’t much explain why he’s got that championship belt around his waist though…
