what white people need to understand is that making characters of color require actual thought and effort. its not enough to have a diverse cast if the characters you make have no real connection to their culture and ESPECIALLY if these characters fall into harmful stereotypes. when you make a character of color you need to examine how writing that character can potentially fall into harmful stereotypes, and how to change the story/aspects of the character accordingly. you need to LEARN from people of color and listen to us. you need to seek out resources and information so to avoid racism, not wait for someone to point out when ur being racist and act only then. and even after that, if you made a character a POC without thought into their background and cultures, and how their lives are affected by being a POC, then thats very lazy representation at best.
