I feel like one of the things the DL fandom really struggles with is not taking things to the extreme for literally all the characters, but for this example I'll bring up Yui. In the beginning of the fandom, it felt like every single person HATED Yui and there's nothing that could change that then with time the fandom started to become warmer and more sympathetic towards her now the pendulum is now firmly on the other direction where Yui is now completely faultless and can't do anything wrong ever it's so exhausting 😮‍💨

I feel the same! People take everything way too seriously and start discourse over the dumbest things. I remember seeing so much Yui hate in the past, especially on Wattpad, and it honestly sucked because I even got hate for making Yui posts. I’m glad the fandom doesn’t hate her anymore, but it still pisses me off how misunderstood she is because she’s too reduced to just a victim.

Personally, I love Yui because she’s crazy. If she were just a victim, I’d feel bad for her, but I don’t think I’d find her nearly as interesting. I dislike her actions but actually like that they made her toxic because it gives her more complexity and makes her feel like an actual character with flaws instead of just someone who exists to suffer. I obviously don’t agree with everything she does, and I don’t like seeing Ayato or any of the other LIs suffer because of her actions, but I feel like they intentionally wrote her this way to create more balance between the characters. Besides, seeing the heroine become more messed up than the demonic guys is low-key cool writing. Like, I kinda enjoy Dom Mommy Yui and her Boy Toy Ayato sometimes 😭😭

The Ayato discourse is genuinely one of the funniest examples of fandom hypocrisy I've ever seen because some of you will perform Olympic-level mental gymnastics to justify literally anything Yui does and then suddenly become the world's strictest judge the second Ayato does something wrong. Why? Because:

1) Yui is a woman, and a huge chunk of this fandom became performative “girl’s girl”. You’ll bend yourselves into pretzels to defend female characters only because they’re girls or in order for everyone to know how much you “hate men”;

2) Yui is also white and blonde, which gives her an automatic halo of purity in this fandom. Slap that design on a character and suddenly people are projecting every possible Eurocentric ideal of innocence, softness, and eternal victimhood onto them;

3) Ayato is one of the most, if not THE most, fully developed characters in the franchise, with a big amount of material exploring his character and backstory. His story is also shaped by East Asian themes, and that genuinely frustrates some of you because Ayato is loved and hyped by so many people despite not fitting the Western interpretations you keep trying to impose on him. You project Western frameworks onto a character whose story was not written through those frameworks, and then act surprised when people interpret and appreciate him differently from you.

And before somebody starts foaming at the mouth: no, this is not me saying Ayato is a complete saint. The fact that I even have to clarify that every single time proves my point. Because apparently in this fandom, the second someone says “Ayato is an extremely complex character who did bad things but feels guilty, tries to fix his mistakes and is always there to protect and sacrifice himself for others” half of you hear: “Actually Ayato has never done anything wrong and should be canonized as an angel uwuwu”

Let's get the HDB complaint out of the way first.

People complaining that Ayato is toxic in HDB will never not be funny because HDB is literally fanservice built around the fantasy of falling in love with unhinged, attractive and demonic men with trauma. That's the entire premise, since it’s a game for MASOCHISTS. Besides, the HDB versions and timeline were completely erased so they have nothing to do with the main story.

MB is where the double standard becomes genuinely embarrassing.

Because suddenly everyone is very concerned about how Ayato treats Yui while conveniently forgetting that Ayato has a PERSPECTIVE too.

So… Let's reverse their genders.

You're a woman.

You've known some man for ONE MONTH.

And he starts telling you:

“You're so cute. Hurry up and give me pleasure!”

Would you be flattered? Or would you be staring at this man thinking: “Why the fuck have you already reduced me to something that exists for your sexual gratification?”

Because if a woman started treating a man badly after that, especially a man who was less attractive than her, you people would be lining up to defend her, saying things like:

“She doesn't owe him anything.”

“She’s too pretty for him”

“He barely knows her.”

“She has every right to do that.”

“He doesn't see her as a person.”

But when Ayato is the person being reduced to a source of pleasure, suddenly the rules change, huh? Because to some of you, objectification is only morally relevant when the object is female.

And then there’s THIS situation:

Let’s reverse their genders again.

You’re a woman.

You've been abandoned by the people closest to you because of a misunderstanding that was also fuelled by your loverboy.

You open up to this man, and then he exposes your weakness to the ENEMIES, who use that against you. You feel betrayed, you feel abandoned, you become hunted down by clans and organisations, you become completely alone and you end up sui€idal.

If a man did this to a woman, do you genuinely think the internet would be sitting there trying to find excuses for that man? Because that exact scene happened already in a recent movie and a bunch of people still hate on the male character for that.

But when Ayato is the one who suffers due to Yui’s choices we're expected to prioritize Yui's “good” intentions over what actually happened to him.

Why?

Why does Yui's intention automatically matter more than Ayato's experience?

Why don't we apply the exact same grace to Ayato?

Because somehow to you guys, when Yui does something hurtful, her POV matters more than the action. But when Ayato does something hurtful, the action is apparently all that matters??

And THEN there’s the Cordelia situation:

Let’s reverse their gender for the third time.

You’re a woman whose childhood abuser comes back into your life.

Now imagine your man repeatedly forces you to face that person, that person starts making you feel hopeless or like a no-good, while your man’s showing more sympathy toward your abuser than toward YOU, their VICTIM!

This is how the Internet would treat him: toxic boyfriend, red flag, “she deserves better”, “I hope she leaves him”

People would be writing paragraphs about how he’s retraumatizing her and invalidating her feelings.

But when Ayato is put in that situation? Nobody cares because it’s Yui who is toxic 🥰🥰

Ayato gets stripped of trauma, stripped of his perspective, stripped of his feelings, and then everyone acts shocked when he doesn’t respond like a perfectly adjusted person.

You cannot spend hours explaining why Yui’s intentions, circumstances, and emotions matter, and then turn around and reduce Ayato to a cardboard cutout whose only purpose is to be “the toxic guy who’s mean to my fav girl”

And tbh, after they start dating, Yui is objectively the worse partner to Ayato than Ayato is to her. It’s okay to admit that. It’s okay for female character not to be perfect angels. Why do you want female characters to always be victims? Let them be in the wrong too; isn’t that equality? You don’t have to twist yourself into knots trying to justify everything she does to him only because he treated her unfairly IN THE PAST BEFORE DATING + these aren’t even all the moments where Yui does Ayato dirty after they become a couple.

Also, what she does to him in the MB manservant ending, paralyzing him completely, putting him in a vegetative state, and SA-ing him afterwards because he can’t talk hence can’t consent remains the most evil thing a main cast DL character has ever done and if you disagree, you don’t understand the gravity of the situation. Like, even Karlheinz, the DEVIL, got weirded out.

The real SIBLINGS OR DATING?

do you think ayato could still fall in love with yui if they had met as just normal classmates in some high school universe and without all the vampire shenanigans... because if i wanna be realistic here i think her blood was the only reason he got so attached to her (in hdb/mb at least) but then again ayayui also have INSANEEE chemistry in general so idk 😭

I've always felt that realistic human Ayayui wouldn’t be very possible. Ayato’s features are ideal. He's used to random people taking pictures of him in canon, got scouted as an idol purely because of his looks by the president of the same company Kou works for, managed to pull a famous idol, has been confirmed to have 'star quality', and so on. If he were human, he'd still be seen as a celebrity.

And that's exactly why I struggle to buy the idea that he'd somehow end up falling for Yui in a completely normal high school setting. Because Yui would 100% not be the only kind girl he had ever met. Ayato would have girls crushing on him left and right. Some would be pretty, some would be cheeky, some would be popular, some would be helpful, some would be genuinely sweet, and some would be all of the above. The idea that Yui would magically be the only girl capable of caring about him as a person beyond his looks, feels incredibly unlikely.

Without the vampire plot forcing them together, Yui loses the one thing that made her impossible for him to ignore in the first place. In a normal AU, she's not the girl with irresistible blood. She's not the girl living in his house. She's just another classmate.

Realistically speaking, human Ayato might date ordinary people but would most likely end up marrying an idol, an actress, a model, or the daughter of some influencing family. With his looks and charisma, he'd naturally move in higher-profile social circles, and Yui wouldn’t be part of those.

Speaking of the western side, can we talk about the amalgamation of westernisation ayato faces? Like it’s giving the gojo treatment to the point that people treat him like this white guy who only thinks about partying and hanging out when i don’t even remember ayato ever doing anything like that in canon (correct me if im wrong) but yeah it’s just very annoying and i had to get this off my chest

That really pmo because so many people misinterpret Ayato so badly that newer fans start taking those versions as canon. Like, it’s okay to make AUs but don’t treat his AU version as his canon one.

Ayato is not a party guy, and he’s definitely not the type who enjoys hanging out. If anything, Yui fits that role way more. He literally says he doesn’t like leaving the house, and his idea of a perfect date is staying at home. Mind you, YUI is the one who usually invites HIM on dates, not the other way around. On top of that, he’s admitted himself that he has no friends, and the only time he plays basketball is alone at school, at night.

He’s a demon boy from the Demon World. Even when they were living in Romania, he most likely wasn’t even aware of it since he wasn’t allowed to leave the mansion. He barely knows how to use a phone, doesn’t know how purikura works, didn’t even know what fast food was, or that there are stores open all night. Even after moving to Japan, he’d only been there about two years before meeting Yui, and he rarely went out besides school. That’s also why it makes no sense when people act like he’s chronically online or super modern. That’s more in line with Laito, whose hobby IS surfing on the internet. Ayato is basically the opposite, he’s practically offline all the time.

And that’s part of what makes him so charming. He looks like this confident, cool, handsome guy on the surface, but underneath he’s awkward, clueless, and goofy in a way that’s actually really endearing. If you strip that away, you lose a big part of what makes him cute in the first place.

the idea of calling men who use women as a food source and then discard them “lesbian” 💀

and if there’s a desire to portray ayato as a lesbian why not apply that to his mother cordi instead considering he’s her copy-paste—?

No fr, I was wondering the same thing. There are so many cute, beautiful, hot female characters with different styles and personalities out there, so why claim male characters as lesbians? I have ptsd from kpop stantwt when those BG lesbians called male idols lesbian and then got mad when other lesbians or queers in general scolded them for saying that. They even posted male idols on Lesbian Visibility Day in April btw. Even if it’s meant as a joke, it’s one that gets repeated way too often to the point that it feels like not even lesbians take lesbians seriously.

Yes, you can still like male characters as a lesbian, but I believe those lesbians who try to claim male characters as lesbian are those who are too attracted to a male character (whether design or overall vibe) to the point that they have to justify themselves somehow in order not to feel guilty of doing so.

the person you called out on your ig story for calling ayato a he/him lesbian in their tweet was a lesbian that uses any pronouns themselves. in fact i see lesbian dialover yumes call their favorite diaboy a he/him lesbian all the time. so unless you're a lesbian yourself then why exactly did you only find it offensive with ayato.

A lesbian calling a boy a “he/him lesbian” is still wrong, you know? Saying “Ayato looks like a he/him lesbian in the new art” just reinforces the stereotype that lesbians have a specific look. A stereotype that made people bully and mock lesbians. At the end of the day, lesbians are simply women who are attracted to other women… nothing more, nothing less (adding mtf and non-binary people attracted to women). There’s no single way to “look like” a lesbian.

+ regarding pronouns: one lesbian might use he/him, have long hair, and a soft, “clean girl” aesthetic, while another might have short hair and a more tomboyish style and use she/her. Those have no specific look either.

“Lesbian Dialover yume fans call their favorite Diaboy a ‘he/him lesbian’ all the time” DiaBOY?? Lesbian?? That doesn’t make sense. A male character can’t be a lesbian. If people want to headcanon the Diaboys differently, that’s fine. Make them gay, bi, genderbend them and so on but calling the actual version a lesbian just misuses the term. There’s a clear difference between saying a guy with feminine features looks like a girl, and calling him a lesbian. We don’t have to insert men into everything.

Just search Yui Komori esp on TikTok, and 10% is actual content about her, and the other 90% is just trash-talking the Diaboys, glazing her like she’s the greatest heroine ever, and complaining about “hate” that barely even exists anymore. Someone please tell them to shut up

It’s better to avoid fandom stuff on tiktok, since hate speech always gets engagement so people will continue posting that for attention.

I also think a lot of people are stuck in the past, acting like she was universally hated. Like, you saw some people call her “weak”, slut, or make her the bad sister in Wattpad fanfics, and suddenly you act like that’s the worst any character has ever been treated in any fandom. Meanwhile, anti-Diaboys fans go way harder not just at the characters, but at their FANS too. The energy isn’t even comparable. There’s a big difference between saying, “I don’t get how anyone can like Yui when she’s such a useless and dumb damsel in distress,” and straight-up saying, “Anyone who likes the Diaboys is disgusting and supports abuse.”

I’m just tired of people acting like Yui is this soft, shy, innocent, angelic white girl core when that’s really just her aesthetic, not who she actually is. She literally fell for a guy twice just because of his looks and pleasure, and she can be incredibly shallow and hypocritical. She gets jealous over any girl who breathes near her man, and half the time it’s not even her actual man at that point. Her entire world revolves around men. She has no personal goals, no strong likes or dislikes, no ambitions outside of helping men, and most of what she does is centered around a male love interest. She’s the type of heroine written to exist for male characters, the kind designed around male desire.

And there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but people need to stop treating her like some untouchable icon who needs to be “saved” from the story, when in reality she’s exactly where she wants to be because she’s exactly the kind of character she was written to be.

Don’t even get me started on how people glamorize Yui going crazy in some endings and call it a “girlboss” moment. If you actually loved her the way you claim, you wouldn’t be cheering on her mental decay and framing it as something badass. That’s not empowerment btw.

The fanbase who thinks Ayato is narcissistic is simply put dumb because they have no clue what that word means and just assume every character who seems to have an inflated self-esteem must be a narcissist.

There’s a big difference between occasionally displaying narcissistic behavior and actually having a narcissistic personality. In reality, everyone shows some degree of narcissistic traits from time to time, since that’s completely normal. We all seek admiration and validation, we can all be arrogant, and we all have moments where we feel a heightened sense of self-importance.

I’ve said it here too, and I’m saying it again. You can’t cure a person with a narcissistic personality. There is no cure for NPD. A therapist can try to help you but it will never disappear.

I think people also forget that Ayato isn’t human and not even a typical demon. He’s the vampire (and vibora) with the highest status in the demon world, arguably even above Karlheinz himself, given his lineage: his grandfather was the Demon Lord, his mother a reigning empress, and later it’s revealed she’s also Founder and Vibora royalty. Coming from that kind of background, it makes sense that he’d expect to be treated as ultra-royalty because, in terms of hierarchy, that’s exactly what he is. Even Reiji once expressed that he wished he had been Cordelia’s child, specifically because of the prestige attached to her lineage. The running gag isn’t that Ayato acts superior despite being “inferior,” but that no one around him actually respects his status. It’s like in those shows/movies where one character is an A-list celebrity, and the rest of the cast just shrugs and goes, “yeah, whatever, you want a cookie?”

Across the games, he’s consistently portrayed as a kind of anomaly. Not only is he the only character who has found the fig (twice) but he’s also the only one who continues to cherish his life and fight against what he is, which is impossible for a demon and exactly why Karlheinz considers him the ideal Adam. He and Kanato are also the only Sakamakis capable of defeating Karlheinz without dying in any endings. Even characters like Ruki and Cordelia acknowledge that there is something different and special about Ayato. He’s also the only character chosen by the World Tree’s power after death, managing to rewind time while already dead. Beyond that, he’s the one who sacrifices the most for others, even outside his own routes. He’s also made after the beauty standard and a genuinely multitalented individual with clear star quality (confirmed) plus he’s described as “a person who can achieve everything he desires”. So even if he’s insecure, sometimes dorky and a loser, struggles with self-hatred, and makes mistakes, the story still consistently positions him as a genuine hero in many ways because when Ayato Sakamaki locks in he becomes the definition of LOCKING IN. Given everything he goes through and accomplishes, if I were him my ego would be HUGE for real 😭😭

Some people are projecting their Western views too much on a franchise created by a Japanese company. It really reminds me of those artists who redraw Asian characters in a realistic or semi-realistic style and suddenly everything turns into monolids, even when the original design clearly shows double eyelids. And it’s like… do you actually look at the source material? Because there is a difference, and making an Asian character’s features more stereotypical to fit your lens is actually bad.

That’s a big part of why Ayakoushu are seen as the “big three.” Is it really their stories or personalities that make them so loved? It’s pretty obvious their appeal is heavily tied to their visuals. Two tall, blonde white men and the beauty standard asian guy.

So maybe it’s time to stop making posts about how much X hurts Y, because when it comes to shipping, most people don’t really care. The average fan tends to ship based on type, aesthetic, or chemistry rather than the characters’ actions.
