the concomitant takes that ‘children’s’/‘YA’ literature can be used as a rhetorical shorthand for ontologically and inherently 'bad,’ shallow, tedious, intellectually vacuous works & that we shouldn’t expect political complexity or political edge from works aimed at a younger audience work in tandem to create a sterile cultural landscape for young people and deride the suggestion that literature for children can & should be good (whatever 'good’ means).
obvious point about the political imaginaries of children’s literature as easy mechanisms for manufacturing consent for the internal logics of capitalist hegemony and the need for communists to be able to explain and tackle that process rather than shrugging our shoulders about it aside, all of this just seems to hearken back to the difficulty adults have seeing children as people who ought to have access to compelling, challenging, interesting literary works. it’s all well and good for the intellectually precocious among us to have come out the womb reading don quixote but i think it’s boring and unimaginative to write off a format that could well open up children (or adults) for whom classic lit (or even contemporary “adult” lit) is not yet accessible to the kinds of stories they might find engaging because nobody thinks alternative political imaginaries and ethical challenges are worth posing to anyone who can’t parse shakespeare yet.

the sea is the earth’s most haunted environment. the density of ghosts per square metre is unparalleled. every tide is a time machine. every whale song is a spirit box
lets all drill holes in our heads for more room for God
