Ecological Empathy - speaking with and encouraging plant life to flourish

Panic inducement - connected to a scream/bleat when in full satyr form, particularly if only heard or the form is partially seen, as it's rather monstrous. The scream itself is what induces panic, as the sound of it causes anxiety and overwhelm or panic attacks if the anxiety is bad enough because it's so sudden/loud. It Triggers something in other people that activates a flight response. It may last as little as a half hour or as long as an hour, possibly more if you've been exposed for an extended amount of time.

NOTE: The depiction of panic comes from the god Pan, who satyr are descendants of. Angelo nods as he listens, taking the carefully passed over shot. He assumed it was so he didn't drop it, but one could never be too careful. Still, he nods in acknowledgement as the man explains, and continues to, watching with sharp eyes as Hercules mimes what he should be doing.

Doing as he's told, Ange tucks the shot between his neck and shoulder, watching how he should set up with his leg. He nods again, coiling up, and 'springing' outward with the energy he'd collected.

It doesn't go far, but it does go, and that's something. Angelo tilts his head, shifting so he doesn't hit the man next to him with a horn, and watches it land.

Herc stepped back to give plenty of space, and then watched - his eyes unable to help critique as he watched Angelo throw. It wasn't perfect - it was a long way from perfect, given that the lad was clearly tall and strong. There was a bit of disconnect between the lower body and the upper, the arm speed could be faster and more fluid, all things that Herc couldn't stop himself from seeing in the movement. But none of that actually mattered right now; it was a good start.

"How'd that feel?" Hercules asked, giving him a second to appreciate the soft thud of shotput on the grass, the satisfaction that came from feeling the sudden release of energy and exhilaration.

"Good?" He asked, looking where it got to. "That's a great starting point you know."

Angelo furrows his brow, tilting his head to think about it, rolling his shoulder out absentmindedly. His gaze lands on the spot where the shot put had landed with a dull, though solid-sounding, thump!

"Good. Kinda weird, but not like 's a bad thing. Jus' like I haven't used th' muscles in a while." Sometimes he missed boxing, missed the exertion. It was why he came to the gym – that and socializing and, like, mental health. Yah know, normal shit.

"Yeah? Well, hey. 'S a start."

Speaking of which -

"Sorry, sorry," he says, when he notices the man jump, tone quieting, almost-but-not-qute softening around the edges from his usual no-nonsense affectation. Then, John shakes his head and grunts, making Ange laugh, a quiet huff of air.

"Why? Day that awful," he asks, shifting to make his crouch more comfortable for a man that was, more or less, pretzling himself into place to talk to his roommate. His hand, still on John's arm, shifts down, fingers curling under his elbow to lift it a little away from his face, head tilting to get a look at him, brow arching.

First things first: every day was awful at InterPride. Not because InterPride was awful (it wasn't) or because his job was hard (it wasn't), but because for most of his life, Johnny had lived under the assumption that he would never have to work. Sure he would do... something. He had a law degree, maybe he'd go freelance... somewhere. Somewhere exotic, or somewhere fun. Somewhere far away from home.

But then Johnny had to get a real job, one that paid the bills. And though the pay was generous, Johnny had a lot of bills. He didn't so much have the money, time or energy to go travel or have fun beyond Swynlake's boundaries.

But lately... Johnny just couldn't quite put his finger on it. Something was off. He hated to say it, but he almost thought he cared, because he could tell something as wrong, and he almost - almost - wanted to fix it. At least so it would stop impacting him, specifically.

"I don't know." He muttered. "'s weird. Just seems like I can't do anything right."

Living with John, one had to realize he was unaccustomed to, well, the lives of regular people. He was born with money, burnt water by just looking at it, and had probably been given the pick of any place he wanted to get his law degree.

Angelo had lived a very, very different life. That didn't mean he liked the man less, or begrudged him his life tantrums every now and again. In fact, he thinks, maybe it just lets him see it from a different side, especially after having known him as long as he has.

I don't know. Just seems like I can't do anything right.

A little furrow appears on between Angelo's eyes before he quickly smoothes it away. Doesn't want John to see it, especially if it meant the man would wallpw worse than he already was.

Instead, Angelo reaches up and tweaks a piece of hair to get his attention, hand dropping to sit, just for a second, on his shoulder a moment later. "Yah can't mumble and be British, Yiannaki mou. Gotta pick," comes the teasing, hoping to at least get the man to sit up. Maybe even if he's lucky to turn and look at him, to be offended.

If he does, it works. And then Angelo can actually figure out what's wrong.

"But I think what I heard was yah think yah dunno, which 's weird 'cause that ain't th' John I know. Did that woman yah work with say some shit again?"

Titan's wet nose was in his ear, and then at his cheek, until the dog could force his snout under Johnny's face, tongue trying to lick his chin even at the strange angle. It was enough, at the very least, for Johnny to shuffle to the side and set a hand out for the dog, ruffling his ears until Angelo called him away.

He could hear the vague sounds of movement in the kitchen, but he didn't know what Angelo had gone in there to do. Johnny hoped he had just decided to leave him to it, let him melt into the sofa cushions until he was a part of the sofa itself. Preferable, really, to going back to work tomorrow.

Johnny assumed the nudging at his arm was Titan, until he heard Angelo's voice much closer than he had expected it to be. He jumped a little, and then shook his head, grunting into the sofa cushion. Y'know, it was actually quite nice here. Warm. Cosy. Maybe he'd stay indefinitely.

"I don't care." Johnny said, and he meant it. "I'm not going in tomorrow, so. Doesn't matter."

"Ok, so you want the shot in your left hand," Hercules explained, passing one over to him carefully - he knew from bitter experience that even the training ones were not fun to be dropped on your toes.

He stepped back then, just a little, and tried to factor it in - how to throw when everything was in the mirror image of how he did it. "So remember, tuck it in between the neck and the shoulder, and get your weight over your left leg. Think of yourself like a spring," Herc explained, settling more and more into his element now.

"What we're aiming for is that one big release of energy. But take your time," Herc added, with a small smile. It maybe wouldn't go right first time, but that was ok.

The offer surprises him, clear on Angelo's face. He grins, wide but slow growing, then nods. "Hell yeah. I'd love tah. Least here I know someone ain't gonna a try an' shove me off," he says, only half joking.

That'd been part of it. The other part had been his injured horn, which had still been healing at the time.

At his comment about being tall, Ange nods. "Sure as shit, but I ain't lookin' up at anyone these days 'less there's a reason. But, ah, well. I've kinda made my peace with hittin' shit an' gettjn' bruised everywhere "

Came with the size, really.

"'M Ange, by th' way," he says, sticking out his hand. "Angelo, technically."

"I'll run interference." He held his board up like it was a weapon, "You know, swat the shovers away. I've got some extra boards in my collection so if you want we can do that some time."

"Nice to meet you Ange," Nate said with a grin and took his hand, giving it a firm shake as a greeting. "If you like being called Ange, I'll call you that. I'm Nate. Technically Nathaniel," He said in his best uppity sort of inflection, "But that seems too stuffy. Guys on the hockey team call me Nosedive though."

The comment makes him laugh, a real one, and grin. That was real, too. He feels more at ease, now, really. Though the man was a virtual stranger, it was...nice to be treated badly. "Sure, man. I'd like that, long as yah ain't afraid I'll break it."

The shake gets returned and it's a decent one, none of that loose wrist bullshit. Angelo likes that, figures that tells him something.

"Well, then yah get tah go by Nate. Nathaniel sounds like a grandpa, no offense. Who d'yah play with? Hockey, I mean? Anyone I know, or jus' school?"

Johnny trudged up the stairs of their apartment building, jangled the key in the lock, and let himself into the apartment. He threw his bag somewhere in the vicinity of the kitchen, not intentionally, that was just where it went. He didn’t care. For all he really cared, it could fly out the window, never to be seen again.

He slumped to the living room, where he threw himself on the sofa, suit and dress shoes still on. He landed face down, nose pressed right into the sofa cushions, and squeezed his eyes shut. Johnny was vaguely aware of Titan by his side, nudging at him, but he didn’t budge.

He’d had a shit day, a shit day that was snowballing into a shit week, and probably a shit month— he was catastrophising. Maybe. Maybe, though, it really was that bad…

Johnny was always vaguely aware of Angelo, who was also now in the living room, and saying something to him. Johnny grunted. Maybe if he tried hard enough, he could melt into the sofa cushions and disappear…

For once, Angelo wasn't out of the flat.

He had the night off from working at Gusteau's, no classes until the following day – afternoon, really – so he was here. He'd been finishing up some course readings from earlier in the week when he hears John come home. Hears Titan, who'd vacilated between living room and Angelo's room (on the bed, which John didn't need to know), trot to see his owner.

When Angelo doesn't immediately hear the other man start making the damn baby voice at the dog, he knows something hadn't gone well.

Sliding off his bed, books and notebook tossed onto the foot, Angelo pads barefoot down the hall and into the living room. "Yah home early. What's –"

Angelo stops when he sees how the man's face planted into the couch. A bad day, then. Without another word, Angelo clicks his tongue, calling Titan to his bed, before moving to the kitchen.

He's there for five minutes, or so, before he returns, setting a mug on the side table. Then, Angelo crouches down beside the couch, gently nudging an arm as he looks him over, reading glasses still perched on his nose.

"Drink for yah on th' table. Sit up or arms up, but we're gonna take that jacket off, maybe th' shoes. Yah gonna be pissed if yah wrinkle it."

Maybe he would have, but he'd gone to extensive therapy for his issues, and it definitely showed in times like these. "No problem. Didn't him anythin' so I ain't gonna up on yah."

Stopping as the other man comes rolling over and adjusting his bag on his shoulder, Angelo cocks his head to the side to take in the board when he pops it up to show off, an appreciative hum escaping.

"Used tah a long time ago. Stopped when I fell an' nearly bust open my head." Amidst other, more Magick related reasons - like the people around the park being assholes, though he'd never had problems when he was skating or watching any friends he had there who did - that Ange didn't really feel the need to get into. "Kinda hard when yah as tall as I am sometimes. Feel like 'm gonna brain myself on some o' th' concrete."

"Oh man, that blows, dude." Nate shook his head, "One bad fall can really get ya." He crossed his arms over his board, "Well, you know, if you ever want to hop back on, I'll cheer you on for sure. Sometimes it just takes one good ride to get you back into things."

He laughed at the tall comment, "Fair, fair, a valid point. Not often I get to look up at someone though. A nice change." He teased with a grin, giving the man who was only a few inches taller than him a little once over. "The limbs don't always work in your favor, but you know, they've got their advantages."

Going to one side of the circle, Hercules eyed the array of training shots that he had been using, and nudged a couple with his toe as he tried to guess what was a sensible weight for Angelo. Not so light as to be pointless, but not so heavy that he couldn't get a good flight by going through the motions. Once he had settled on one, he picked it up.

"Ok, so you're gonna want to dust your hands a little," he explained, pointing at the little bag of chalk dust. "Just to help you get your grip." You obviously didn't want to hold onto the ball for ever, but you also didn't want it slipping out of your grip and landing on your toes - he'd done it before.

"And then come over to the circle. Which is your dominant arm?" Hercules asked, standing to the side with the weight in his hands and head tilted slightly.

Hercules' lop-sided grin made him feel better. If only a little bit. And, hell, maybe it was going to be fine, even if his fascination, wanting to learn about it, now suddenly made him want to backpedal.

It was fine.

Angelo watches as the other man moves to the side of the circle and looks over the different types of shot ( he thinks that's what they're called? ) before he finally picks one of the ones he'd nudged with a foot earlier and carries it over.

When he's pointed toward the chalk bag, Ange nods and does as he's told, furrowing his brow a bit at the feeling of it on his skin. It was a little weird, actually, but it wasn't unpleasant. There was just a coat of...something on his hands.

Then, he walks to the circle, waving the hand on his left arm. "This one, most o' th' time, but 'm pretty ambidextrous." He'd learned to be when he'd broken his arm as a kid, but that was neither here nor there. Herc didn't need to know that, nor the reason why it'd happened.

"Oh man, sorry!" Nate apologized with a laugh, "Sometimes the board just has a mind of her own and I gotta keep myself from falling off."

He turned around, rolling towards the dude. "Yeah man. I've got a whole collection." A collection his parents weren't entirely thrilled with him displaying in the garage next to their fancy cars but you know, his shit cost a good amount of money too.

Popping the board up into his hands he showed it off to the stranger, "You 'board at all or are you more of a general knowledge kind of guy?"

He backslid off the nearest bench, managing to land without too much of a problem, ramping up speed to take on the nearest raised cement platform.

He kicked off and jumped, landing and teetering on his board as he fought to keep his balance and not fall onto any passersby before he landed and cheered loudly, "Fuck yeah! Let's goooo."

He laughed, turning to the nearest person, "You see that shit?"

Angelo was just walking on campus, minding his own business. He had an introductory agricultural sciences class at 3 o'clock so he was trying to hoof it - no pun intended - across the quad.

He doesn't expect there to be a skateboard whizzing by.

The blond kicks the board off the ground and over a bench, grinding along the backaide before coming down onto cement. He perches on his next go, then lands with solid contact and a whoop.

Despite himself, Ange finds himself grinning, shaking his head in amusement. "Sure did, man. Almost took me out. 'S a longboard, yeah?"

Despite the chuckling, Angelo grins at the other man, almost sheepish, and gives a shrug. "Hey 'm always worryin' 'bout hurtin' people, man. Isn't exactly somethin' I turn off."

And it wasn't. He was large, "unnatural" because of his magick. People didn't always trust him, and others were wary of him. But still – he stands there and listens, nodding as Hercules explains.

When he demonstrates, and then actually demonstrates, Angelo's eyes widen and he whistles.

"Damn. Can see why yah gotta practice that shit. Pretty throw," he mutters, craning his head to see where it lands and guesstimating the distance.

Hercules felt a twinge of guilt for a moment. He had always worried about hurting people. Still did, in a way, but not here. Here, on the track, on the field, he knew what he was doing. He could trust himself, trust his limits.

The throw steadied him. Hercules breathed out slowly through his nose, his heart skipping a little as the sudden explosion of energy took its moments to disperse again, before he turned around and shrugged.

Honestly? It wasn't perfect. He had felt the slip a little in his hand, he had felt it come out a little too high and waste some of the energy, but... it was alright. That was why you trained.

"It's decent," he shrugged, tipping his head from side to side. "You want a go? I've got some lighter ones that are good to practice with first, to get the movement right?"

Angelo knows from experience that the breaths Hercules is taking might be for himself as much as they are the throw. He doesn't comment. Hell, he doesn't say a goddamn word. He just lets the man throw and gives it the compliment it's due.

And when Hercules says it's not amazing, that it's alright, Ange believes him. He's the one that trains for this stuff, after all.

Then, though, he's offered a chance to throw. Told he could have a lighter one, and that he could use that to get the feeling. Suddenly, he feels a lot like Danny fuckin' Zuko trying out for track.

Ange heaitates, considers it. Thinks about it.

Then, he nods, rolls his shoulders in a shrug, says, "Sure, why fuckin' not," and hopes the grin doesn't give off that he feels about as steady as a teeter-totter with that decision.

The big guy looks uncomfortable but, quite honestly?, Angelo knew the run of it. The way stuff like this worked. Mundus eithet didn't know or care and Magicks who were closeted or could hide their presentation were guilty.

It was how things worked out, in his experience at least. Angelo had stopped being upset about it a long time ago. He just keeps his chin up and smirk on.

"Uh maybe as a kid? Never done it, though, so. If yah wanna demonstrate –"

Ange waves his hand toward the man and his field, or area he was aiming, he guesses, as though to give permission.

"Hate yah hurt myself or someone else not doin' it right."

"I wouldn't worry too much about hurting anyone else," Herc chuckled. Unless Angelo managed to throw it in the complete wrong direction, they were safe. The in-field was deserted apart from the pair of them. "So you want to get a bit of chalk on your hand like this-" he demonstrated dipping his hand into the bag of chalk, and then dusting some off.

"Pick up the shot, and you want it nestled in here-" he demonstrated settling the heavy little ball in against his neck and approached the throwing circle.

"Then you want your weight over your dominant leg," he demonstrated, setting himself up in what looked like the wrong direction, "And you're going to bend yourself over like this, get your balance, and when you feel ready, you're going to spring back off that leg, onto the other, and pivot. Then the arm comes through and pushes the ball out."

Herc demonstrated it first in slow motion, before looking at Angelo with a smile and resettling himself. Then he threw for real; a coiled spring unloading in one sudden explosion of movement that took him across the circle and sent the shot flying out into the dark field some 15 metres.

Despite the chuckling, Angelo grins at the other man, almost sheepish, and gives a shrug. "Hey 'm always worryin' 'bout hurtin' people, man. Isn't exactly somethin' I turn off."

And it wasn't. He was large, "unnatural" because of his magick. People didn't always trust him, and others were wary of him. But still – he stands there and listens, nodding as Hercules explains.

When he demonstrates, and then actually demonstrates, Angelo's eyes widen and he whistles.

"Damn. Can see why yah gotta practice that shit. Pretty throw," he mutters, craning his head to see where it lands and guesstimating the distance.

I Need Them To Be My Guide ❂ Open

Rapunzel was out of paint.

Not all of it! Well… a lot of it. She’d been working on a landscape of the view out of the suite she shared with Mother and she was out of almost all of her greens! And most of her pinks. And her oranges. She had been doing okay mixing other colors to get what she needed, but now she was running low on those too! 

Rapunzel had asked Mother for more paints, but she was so busy helping out around the inn that she hadn’t had time to go get any yet! And usually Rapunzel would wait patiently, but Jack had warned her that the snow would start to melt soon, so she only had so long to finish her painting. 

She hadn’t ventured out into the nearby town yet. Usually, she waited for Mother’s all-clear and even then, only went out with her the first few times so she wouldn’t get lost. The idea of going out on her own was terrifying…

(But also a little exhilarating.)

… Just to the store to get the paint she needed, then she would be right back! 

Or so she had thought!!! She’d gotten so distracted by actually walking through Swynlake for the first time that she’d gotten completely turned around and was hopelessly lost. Pascal was no help either; he had gotten just as distracted as she had! She shrunk further into her oversized hoodie, tugging on the cuffs nervously as she looked around for anything familiar. She couldn’t be out too long, Mother would be so disappointed!

She would have to ask for help.

Taking a deep breath, Rapunzel approached the first person who didn’t look too dangerous and gave them a shaky smile. “Excuse me,” she said, her voice cracking. “C-could you point me towards an art store?”

Angelo had work, but he also had to study, so he'd left the flat – later than normal, mind, because he'd snagged Titan for a run and his dinner, knowing Johnny would be home later, after Ange was gone for his shift – to find a place to study.

The weather was decent, so he thinks magbe the park. The forest would be too busy, and Angelo too inclined to wander instead of actually doing what he was there for.

He's stopped, however, by a mousy, little grey thing on the street. Huddled up in her hoodie, Angelo almost doesn't see she's, well, a she ( pronouns pending ) until he snatches his headphone from his ear.

His brow furrows at the question, though he pastes on a smile and slouches, as to not look iintimidating. He got that a lot, after all, and women like her ( pending, again ) were more inclined to feel safe when he kept his distance.

"Ah, well shi – sorry, no. Um, maybe the university? 'M headin' that way ‐" He was, but not right away, though he might have to change that, how little and...almost scared she looked. "- if yah want me to show yah?"

Tilting his head down to look more fully under her hood, Angelo offers what he hopes is a reassuring, friendly smile, and waits.

"Maybe if yah stretch to your tip-toes," he snarks, snorting a laugh at the older man's indignation. He dodges the swatting easily, used to it with his niece anf nephew. "Can't help th' fact I've got a better rack, man, sorry."

And, yes, he did think he was hilarious. And, yes, he did wink while he said it thankyouverymuch. Who else was going to make these kinds of jokes at his expense? Ian? He thinks not.

The look on Barley's face was all he needed to see, even as he slipped an arm around the man's shoulders, casual, and tugs him into his side for another squeeze. "Sometimes I wish they could. Be a whole lot easier on 'em."

Eleni already looked a bit like him at that age. He knew what that was like; Dimitris had gotten his sister's goat legs, so he used the canes polio patients had, like she did, but he didn't care if he ran around in his goatskin. Not yet. Angelo didn't want that to change.

"Me? Behave?" Angelo's smile grows wide, almost sly. "Damn, B, 's lik you're askin' me not to. But fine. S'pose I can."

"Oh shut up. I was the tallest one of us until very recently. I still remember when you and Ian were pipsqueaks." Barley rolled his eyes. He wasn't as tall as Ian was now, an inch shorter in height than his baby brother, but that didn't mean that Barley was going to bow down and accept being short as his reality. It just wasn't true. "And I'm sure I could still kick your butt if I needed to."

Barley's expression softened, though, as they talked about Eleni and Dimitri. "I swear, one of these days I'm gonna convince your sister to come here and show her how we party in Swynlake." Barley loved kids and honestly thought of those two as his own niece and nephew by this point. He might not have lived in New Mushroomton for many many years but he still kept those connections alive happily.

"Hey, I'm a responsible adult now. I can't have you causing a scene and taking away my credibility so fast, okay?" Barley didn't really mean it, there was no bite to his words, but there was a hint of truth underlying it all.

"Yeah, 'm sure yah do, an' fondly, 'cause yah could boss us around," Angelo quips, chuckling quietly. But he probably could, if he caught Ange in the right mood. He doesn't say that, of course, but he thinks it. So that counts, right?

"Been tryin'," he admits, tone softening. "But she's stubborn. Yah knew that, though." And he did, was the thing. Barley had been around Lyra long enough to know that his sister was as stubborn as a mule. "They'd love tah see yah if they come down, though. Know they would."

At the comment, Angelo snorts and shakes his head. "Relax, B. 'M on th' up. Ain't gotten intah no fights, doin' good. Got two damn jobs an' goin' tah school. Ain't gonna ruin yah credibility."

The Horai were the goddesses of seasons and natural portions of time.

Chose to portray them as triplets this time. Of course, It would be fun to depict them as more "elemental", but I went with simple human designs for this. I plan to have them printed on my new thank-you cards soon. ✨

Hercules open his mouth the closes it. He goes to say something, clearly, but his eyes stray to Angelo's horns and the other man realizes what he was going to ask.

Angelo gives a self-deprecating smile and a little shrug.

He nods at the explanation, head cocking to the side as he watches the other man stare at his shoes like that have all the answers. "Don't worry 'bout it, man. Ain't like yah were th' one that told me no." But it was an explanation, all the same, and one he was able to accept easily enough.

"Well, dunno how. But if yah wanna show me, be happy tah try one."

Hercules only felt more uncomfortable as Angelo acknowledged it all, some tiny part of him feeling like it had to cringe away from the light as he so easily said it wasn't Hercules' fault. He had no way to know that Hercules had hidden for so long from the same glare, but still, he felt the shame of it.

"Ok, so uh, have you ever seen any shot put?" Herc asked, figuring that was the best place to start. "If not, I can just demonstrate?"

That might be safer, but he didn't want to come across like a total jerk.

The big guy looks uncomfortable but, quite honestly?, Angelo knew the run of it. The way stuff like this worked. Mundus eithet didn't know or care and Magicks who were closeted or could hide their presentation were guilty.

It was how things worked out, in his experience at least. Angelo had stopped being upset about it a long time ago. He just keeps his chin up and smirk on.

"Uh maybe as a kid? Never done it, though, so. If yah wanna demonstrate –"

Ange waves his hand toward the man and his field, or area he was aiming, he guesses, as though to give permission.

"Hate yah hurt myself or someone else not doin' it right."
