WASHINGTON BRUISES EASILY THIS TIME OF NIGHT. Cloaks and daggers deepening dusk with purples and blues like a swelled, weeping hematoma. A slow-drip feed of livor mortis against the hood—rain tapping to the hum of an idle engine; a simmering conversation.
A MOMENT... THEN HE SPEAKS.
PHILIP:
“ Everybody thinks they're screwed up. That’s what I’ve learned. ” He’s soft spoken, made gentle by painful understanding. “ You’re not screwed up, Sofie. ”
GUILT IS BLOOD SPILLED FOR A CAUSE TOO RIPELY JOINED. THE COMMENDATION OF A HAND ON YOUR SHOULDER IN THE MORGUE. KNOWING THERE IS NO WAY OUT BUT INTO THE LONG, DARK COLD.

DISSOLVE TO: PHILIP HAS BOTH HANDS FIRMLY ON THE WHEEL, GRIPPING TEN AND TWO O'CLOCK. MIRRORS CHECKED, THE ROAD AND THE BACKSEAT ARE BOTH EMPTY. EXPERIENCE CONFIRMS A TAIL WOULD HAVE SHOWN ITSELF BY NOW, AND HIS PASSENGER SITS BESIDE HIM, NOT BEHIND. PHILIP ISN'T USED TO IT.
THEY DRIVE UNDERNEATH A COVER OF DARKNESS. Lonely, desolate roads less traveled. The headlights peel long white and double-yellows, cracked like broken blood vessels of cases gone cold, and only Philip knows where their trail leads. He keeps his head on straight, eyes ahead and alert as the hours stretch into the dead of night.
There’s camaraderie in after-hours radio and the open road: driving with nothing to risk except conversation.

OUTSIDE THE WINDOW, summer’s night descends. Thick like a mourning veil. In the breeze, through the trees, a low sibilance breathes and whispers. Ash shakes his head, forgetting he heard anything at all, “ you think I'm crazy, huh? ”
