three meanings of the backseat girl chorus
these lyrics remind me of someone who uses guilt against you. or to maybe, get something out of you. after so many times of someone saying "i've had such a bad day... come over." you see their sadness as something evil.
they also describe the feeling of seeing someone's true self. when they cry, you see the real them, you see the gross and uncensored part of them. you see someone's true ugliness, you see them.
the song also talks about *not* seeing someone's true self, a shallow relationship. neither party truly cares for the other, both in a deeply unhappy time in their lives and just having a consistent sexual relationship with one person, that is not deep or meaningful. something to fill the void. when she says "you're so ugly when you cry" she is explaining her discomfort in actually seeing the emotions and feelings of someone in which the relationship was previously shallow.
i let you drive, 'cause im a backseat girl.
you're in control, you run the game. i will sit in the back seat and watch the back of your skull, to avoid having to look you in the face.
personally, i find the first meaning to be what resounds with me. when i am sing crying pacing in my bedroom, i am filled with the rage of someone using their sadness as a weapon.
