Round 1 is Complete!
In the second part of the first round, Actinomycetota, Rhodothermota, Spirochaetota, Planctomycetota, Myxococcota, Verrucomicrobiota, Bdellovibrionota and Chloroflexota were victorious! We will be saying goodbye to Thermomicrobiota, Campylobacterota, Abditibacterota, Bacteroidota, Synergistota, Chlamydiota, and Chlorobiota.
The list of bacteria that will proceed to Round 2 will be determined after Round 1.5, which will consist of the following 10 battles!

I have a lot of propaganda left to write for the new bacteria in this round, so I expect it to be about a week before that round is ready.

I myself have learned SO MUCH about bacteria through this project and hope to learn more about the field afterwards... honestly this whole tumblr taxonomy community has been really inspiring!

They proof-read basically ALL of the propaganda that hits your dash (with the exception of some early examples), and were generally super helpful as a source of quality-control and peer-review, from someone who has a much better knowledge of biology than I. Yep! Well, in the sense that it's teeming with life, yes. I think it's pretty amazing. If you grab a glass of it, the pink color remains, meaning it's not an effect of a color at the bottom of the lake or anything: there are just a lot of red bacteria in there!

Despite the tuberculosis of it all (write faster, John Green, I really want to read your TB book), Actinomycetota absolutely deserves this one. Not for all of the antibiotic production, which is indeed next level (thanks for curing sooooooo many infections, when all you're trying to do is kill off your neighbours so you can steal their stuff); and also not for the nutrient cycling, even thought that's damned important. No, I turn your attention to geosmin and that lovely turned-earth smell as well as the smell of rain. That's the good shit right there. <3

Oh man, this was a tough one!! On the one hand you have the rhodopsins — related to the molecules that make your eyes able to detect light, and also helpful for proving that proton gradients can power ATP production:
Illustration from Garret & Grisham Biochemistry, showing the experiment done by Racker & Stoeckenius (1974) -- they created artificial vesicles that contained both bacteriorhodopsin and mitochondrial ATP synthase. When they shone light on them, they generated ATP.
But then you have H. pylori, and the story of Barry Marshall's frustration with his inability to definitively prove that the bacteria caused ulcers in his patients. Because even though all his ulcer patients had H. pylori in their stomachs, correlation doesn’t mean causation. So he gave up and drank one of his cultures. (Without, we should mention, running this idea by an IRB first.) He got super sick, but cured himself with antibiotics…and won a Nobel Prize for linking bacteria with gastric ulcers.
Still, as I tell my students, this was a terrible idea, and they should never ever drink anything in the lab, not even to get a Nobel Prize. (Also, similarly, stay away from TikTok dares.)
(I have had an ulcer, which was not fun, but once they figured it out and gave me antibiotics for it, poof!)
