Abditibacteriota
Group: Terrabacteria
Gram-stain: Negative
Etymology: For Abditibacterium utsteinense. From the Latin "abditus", meaning "hidden", and the neo-Latin "bacterium".
About: First cultivated in 2018, Abditibacteriota is one of the most recently discovered phyla of bacteria. Some are quite extremophilic, with cold or dry habitats such as deserts and polar regions. They are oligotrophic, meaning that they are optimized for life in a low-nutrient environment, and remarkably resistant against various antibiotics and toxins. Tough little guys!
The first species to be cultivated, Abditibacterium utsteinense, was discovered in the mountain soil of Antarctica. They are psychrophilic, and grow best around a temperature of 20° C, which is relatively cold for bacteria. Other Abditibacteriota are mesophiles or simple thermophiles, and live in places such as deserts, temperate forests, and the digestive tracts of yaks, water buffalo, and goats. Their closest relative as a phylum is Armatimonadota.
