< "I like feeling responsible for you, making sure your needs are met and that you're happy," Shane smiled warmly as he looked at Ilya with affection. "I like being able to support you and be your rock, because Ilya... I think you forget that you've helped me go through so much, and now I get to do that for you." 

"It's not the same," Ilya mumbled.

"Yes, it is. Why are you saying that?" 

"Well, that's my job."

Shane looked at him with a frown, as if Ilya were being an idiot. Well, maybe Ilya wasn't wrong about feeling stupid after all. "What are you talking about?" 

"It's what I'm good at, making sure everyone around me is happy. It makes me feel useful," Ilya shrugged his shoulders. "And helping you was the easiest thing in the world."

"Yeah, Ilya, that's part of the problem. You think it's your responsibility to provide for everyone, and then you think that you aren't deserving of the same treatment... and I get it, I get why it's hard for you to receive or to admit that you need help, and, especially, how to accept help from others..." Shane took Ilya's hand into his and held it tightly as he spoke. "You've got to understand that I want to be that for you, I want to be useful, I want to be the one to help you... I want to be everything for you. Whatever you fucking need. Like when you say I'm your hero, that's like-" Shane suddenly went silent as emotion caught in his throat. "That's what I want. That's what I really want; I want to be your man. It makes me feel fucking empowered, ok?" 

Ilya nodded as the left corner of his mouth lifted in a loopsided grin. "You are." 

"I'm what? Say it." 

"You're my man." 

"Yes, so please tell your brain to stop being a fucking asshole." >
