The right candidate will always refuse to take a job this scummy. For 100 x 100 pixels and pixel art you should be $60 + licencing at the absolute minimum since we’re looking at cel shading. As this is meant to be ongoing work, they should be paying at least $100 per image + licencing.

Also, when you deal with people like this who want default “ownership” on your copyright? Run.

Even for a more cartoony looking card game illustration (think Magic: The Gathering) they should still be looking at $300 per image since we’d be looking at about two cards a week and probably eight a month. Since they’re making money off this project, they also need to pay for a commercial use licence on top.

Regardless, it’s worth far more than $30.

Why: Filing false charge backs on Paypal for “unauthorized payment”

I had finished her commission on September 7th, she had sent full payment on September 2nd.

The dispute was opened on September 20th. I had messaged her on DA about the dispute, she claims it was a mistake and she was going to try to stop it.

I messaged her 2-3 times after that but have received no replies. There are now 2 other’s on her page who are asking about getting disputes as well.

She is currently using the art from her commission, that I drew, as her icon.

I had tried to look up previous bewares on this person but found none. I really hope this is just an issue with her bank, but it’s starting to look like it’s not.

She is now blacklisted from my commisions.

Update!

Paypal has turned to her favor, they also took out an extra $20 for the charge back. She has not replied back, she has not given any updates, she will now be submitted to every website I’m active on. I gave her the alternative to donate the $45 back to me if she truly is “trying” to fix this issue, but I don’t see that happening.

I will be using Invoices from now on.

Not only did this person receive their commissioned piece for free, they also added insult to injury by taking another $20 from my wife after locking her account.

Let’s make sure she never does it to anyone else. Some of us live off of commissions, and this is absolutely unacceptable.

How much for pencil commissions?

It depends - quick sketches for private commissions start at 30$, a drawing goes to 50-60$. More detailed drawings start at 200$ and when it is about more than hanging the drawing at the wall (when it is about licencing for usage) there are licence fees added on top. Not counting eventual polishes and further demands a client might have. So a pencilled work goes basically from 30$ - 900$ (as an example)  + depending on what is needed.

Per example - an indie author has paid 200$ for each B/W drawing used in his own book. If he was a publisher, it would have been about 500-600$ which includes the licence fees according to his position and the usage he is aiming for. So there are many possibilities when it comes to commissions and the prices adjust depending on the client and usage.

So, for anyone else reading this keep in mind: This is what negotiation is for. If the artist is a professional (as much as the client where the overall behaviour and approach counts) he will be willing to discuss everything in detail. Keep in mind - if the client stops responding or doesn’t want to negotiate then the commission might not have been a serious request and artists haven’t a lot of time. So one should decide quick, because if a client needs too long another client who had a serious request will take the place.

Since the sketcher and inker is acting as a concept artist we’re looking at $500 total for work, but the rights for transformation (i.e. someone else painting it) we’re looking at $1000 for them to have the right to colour it.

Buying the paintings alone is $2000+ per original painting, not including the insurance or shipping costs. Let’s say material costs of $600 minimum per painting for material costs for decent quality paint and paper. The bigger the painting the higher the prices. Also, buying a physical artwork does not give you the right to display or use the artwork so we’ll be looking at another $4000 for that too.

Too little money for too much effort. Illustrations for covers themselves start at $300USD and that’s for a straight up commission. For speculative work and a screening process beyond simply showing a portfolio, they should be paying for each artwork they request to see in addition to the cover prices. We’re looking at $600 for the two covers with an additional $300 per piece of spec work desired.

Our prospective client here struggles with comprehending that intellectual property is actually worth money despite his username belonging to one of the most valuable gaming IPs currently around.

Of all things this is serious wage dumping... One illustration alone (lineart and simple colour) should at least cost 50-70$ if it is a private commission. But trying to pay that low for commercial purposes? That should be 600$ per set plus licencing on top. Even if someone is just starting out they have to be paid properly.
