The secret behind Beyonce's Formation
Before offering her bittersweet concoction Lemonade, Beyonce proposed her explosive appetizer “Formation”. While being critically acclaimed, the surprise single was riddled on controversy for its racial content. But before the stir, before the Black Panthers outfits at the Super Bowl performance, Formation was just a rhyme created by one of Queen Bey’s acolytes… It takes some bravados, an avant-garde spirit and a sort of feminist mindset to speak Beyonce’s language. For her latest album which initiated her current tour, the Queen of pop required the creme de la creme for her list of composers. They had be on her wavelength, sing her mantras in their own realm and the composer Michael Len Williams was one of the first appointed. Williams II, professionally known as Mike WiLL Made it, was the ignition behind Beyonce’s single “Formation”. In a recent interview with the New Yorker, the producer who has signed his name on major hits such as “We can’t stop” by Miley Cyrus or “Pour it up” by Rihanna, has revealed the Genesis of the surprised single. It’s in the middle of the desert between sand dunes and rusty lizards that Williams and his cohort started freestyling. “I’m like dog, we got O.K ladies, now let’s get in formation”. After recording his draft, he realized that his little prose could become a new woman empowerment anthem. That could be a hard song for the ladies. Like, ‘Ladies, let’s not just fall for anything.”On his way to Coachella, he eventually submitted the Idea to Miss Carter who operated her magic by turning the simple improvisation into a major hit. More than entertainer, the former Destiny Child’s is brilliantly building her era but she always does it with her own twist.

The Beauty and the Beholder
Beauty is a hackneyed concept nowadays. Physical appearance is a must. Botox, hair extensions, breast implants, drastic diets -- there are no holds barred when it comes to fitting in with the society’s demand. But is the 21st century misrepresenting the idea of being a beautiful woman ? It’s a shiny June morning at the Tiffany Salon in Jamaica, Queens. Hairdryers rings out as a perpetual background sound, echoing a bacchata rhythm played on the radio. Ashley, in her late twenties, comes to style her brown curly hair twice a month. « i’m not getting any younger, staying in shape is my number one priority » she says. According to her being a beautiful woman is a full package : an ounce of spirituality, a dash of natural beauty and splash of upkeep. Happily married, she deplores those women who abandon their feminity in the name of their household tedium and boring routine. She considers eventually having plastic surgery to get a thinner waist and a bigger chest; in fact the songstress Beyonce epitomizes this beauty she’s seeking. Juanita, 55 years old, interrupts the conversation. She denouces the tragedy of the 21st Century where women are being pushed to comform to « Western Standars of Beauty ». Long legs, full upper lips, a straight nose and voluminous boobs. Mixed dominican and Afro-american, she claims with pride that she never fell for weaves, permanent cream or any other artifices in the market. « A beautiful silhouette might get you there but it will not keep you ». She remembers Jacqueline Kennedy and describes the quintessence of class, beauty and womanhood. Walter, 45 years old and originally from Hawaï, puts a new spin on the topic. Every woman is beautiful and should embrace her intrinsic values instead of giving credit to this so called « Beauty Image » spread by the media. His ideal woman is nice and soft spoken with brown eyes and a chunky body type. Suddenly at loss of words, he pauses then evokes Salma Hayeck and this je ne sais quoi that makes her so charming. Defining beauty means arguing and questionning a trend set by our society. Poets and philosophers describes it as a moral equation. Every woman possess their beauty arsenal though most of them tend to hide it with fleeting tricks. « Beauty is not caused, it is » wrote Emily Dickinson. An utopic quote as we leave the threshold.
