Coworkers
There were a lot of jobs in which a person could quit at any time, find a new job, and move along with life.
Unfortunately for Martin, being an enforcer for a drug cartel was not one of those jobs. He collected money, kept an eye on the people that his boss told him to keep an eye on, and tied up loose ends the moment they posed a threat to the organization.
He wasn’t happy, but he was getting paid, and he wasn’t dead.
His least favorite stop of the week, of course, was collecting the boss’ cut from Bailey. She was a pain in his ass, but it was part of the job, so as he banged on her door, he took a deep breath and waited.
“Come on, let me in so that we can get on with this already.” he finally called out. “Your car’s out front, so I know you’re in there.”

Bailey was a runner, plain and simple. She moved drugs for a cartel and knew in her heart the dangers of it, but it was her life now and it kept away those that would love to finish what they started. Hearing the bang of her door made her eyes roll and she inhaled on her cigarette, taking her sweet time to get up and answer the door. Martin coming for her cut was one of her least favorite activities, but she made it a point to ease her unhappiness by making him suffer.
“Yeah, yeah,” she mumbled as she headed to the door, propping it open and giving him an insincere smile. “Oh Martin, I didn’t hear you the first five times you knocked.” Grinning she walked away, heading into the kitchen where she had the money for him, but stopping to grab her drink on the way. Once again making him wait as she opened the drawer and pulled out the stash, “I’d offer you a drink but why be hospitable?” Tossing the bag at him she leaned her hip into the counter taking a drag off her sip. “You gonna count it?”
