Cash-strapped Virgin Australia collapsed Tuesday, making it the largest carrier yet to buckle under the strain of the coronavirus pandemic, which has ravaged the global airline industry. In an announcement to the Australian Stock Exchange, Virgin said it planned to keep operating flights despite handing the keys to administrators. The loss of Virgin would be a blow for Australians, who depend on air travel to get around the vast nation, and for the future of a tourist industry already reeling from months-long bushfire and COVID crises.

Australia has just two full-service airlines, Virgin and flag-carrier Qantas, which are complemented by their budget offshoots, Tigerair and Jetstar.

Emirates new connection between Barcelona and Mexico City is being sold to passengers as a fifth freedom flight. While not based in either Spain or Mexico, Emirates has secured permission to sell tickets between the two. Emirates has been eying flights to Mexico for quite some time. In fact, the whole process of securing flying rights has been fairly drawn out after a court attempted to block permission to the airline. Emirates has chosen Barcelona as the perfect route to tag the flight to Mexico City on to.

As a result, the carrier is now serving three routes with the launch of one flight. Emirates flight EK255, departed at full capacity with over 300 passengers, led a group of VIP guests and media on board, at 0330hrs local time on Monday morning.

The aircraft utilized for this morning’s inaugural flight was Emirates’ newly refurbished two-class Boeing 777-200LR which offers 38 Business Class seats in a 2-2-2 layout, and 264 seats in Economy Class. The flight will stop in Barcelona before continuing on its journey to Mexico City.

The Loganair Westray to Papa Westray route is the shortest scheduled passenger flight in the world. Flights on this route are scheduled for one and a half minutes, and actual flying time is closer to one minute. The record for the fastest flight is 53 seconds. The route is flown by Loganair, a Scottish regional airline that serves Scotland's Highlands and islands. The route between the Orkney Islands of Westray and Papa Westray in northern United Kingdom is a subsidized public service obligation.

The Orkney Islands Council awards the route, along with several other routes throughout the islands, through a tendering process. The flights began in 1967, establishing the record for the world's shortest scheduled flights, and they have been continuously operated by Loganair.

The flight is listed in the Book of Records as the world's shortest. It is a popular tourist route for many visitors to Scotland but it is also a vital link for people who live in Orkney. "It will make all the difference in ensuring the children from Papa Westray can continue their schooling throughout the winter."

The latest aircraft from the Brazilian manufacturer, the E190-E2 has the lowest noise levels among all new generation single aisle aircraft.

The E190-E2 is the same size as its predecessor the E190 with up to 114 seats.
