Puffin on westray, Orkney islands
Fratercula arctica
The Westray Wife (also known as the Orkney Venus) is a small Neolithic figurine, 4 centimetres (1.6 in) in height, carved from sandstone. It was discovered during an Historic Scotland dig at the Links of Noltland, on Westray, Orkney, Scotland, in the summer of 2009. It was the first Neolithic carving of a human form to have been found in Scotland, and to date it is the earliest depiction of a face found in the United Kingdom.

Plant of the Day
Sunday 11 July 2021
Growing in well-drained, sunny grassland with low nitrogen levels was the vibrant Lotus corniculatus (bird's foot trefoil, eggs and bacon, granny's toenails) on the island of Westray, Orkney. Here the perennial is nature’s decoration for this ‘noust’, a place where a boat can be hauled up and kept ashore. The flowers provide nectar for bees and the foliage a larval food for some butterflies and moths.

Great story! Original caption:
Got a tight 80 seconds to spare? It’s all the time you need to fly commercial across the Orkney Islands. The word’s shortest nonstop flight is a tiny hop between the islands of Westray and Papa Westray in the United Kingdom, a mere 1.7 miles (2.7 km) apart. For the past 50 years, Scottish airline Loganair has been transporting islanders between the two archipelagos, becoming an integral part of many passengers daily commute. Clocking in at under two minutes, this might be the swiftest and sweetest way to get to work.
