Barbados is investing in the next generation of reparations work by establishing three postgraduate scholarships for Barbadians to study Black Studies and related disciplines, with a strong focus on reparatory justice.
The scholarships are part of the country’s wider push to address the lasting impact of slavery and colonialism, not only through calls for compensation, but by building knowledge, research and policy expertise around reparations.
Through links with The University of the West Indies and the University of Glasgow, the initiative is designed to help develop people who can contribute to future research, government policy and international discussions on reparatory justice.
It may be a small first cohort, but the message is significant: Barbados is treating reparations as something that requires long-term investment, education and expertise, not just political speeches.
