The time since Rey has left Jakku has been marked mostly by discomfort. Of course, Jakku had not been particularly kind to her -- or anyone, for that matter -- but it was, at least, familiar. She had established a routine that could be relied upon. Up until her last days there, when Unkar Plutt had begun manipulating the market and robbing her of food, her only uncertainty lay in when her family would realize their mistake and return to fetch her. Because, surely, they would return. Every so often, fear creeps into her chest and grips her heart in its iron claws as she wonders whether her parents had gone to Jakku in her absence, wondering where she had gone, if she had missed her only chance to reunite with the parents that she has never known. It is highly unlikely, but longstanding hopes are hard to kill. That very fear increases her distrust of the people here as she convinces herself that she is an inconvenience and is better off returning to a desert that she never should have left. Even in the face of a woman whose expression seems kind, she automatically backpedals, searching for an easy exit. “Sorry, I, uh, I should go.”
