reading a pdf that compiled a couple essays (with intro) about the bioethics of human cloning written by bioethicists who were, admittedly, conservatives associated with the Bush administration (afaict). definitely a mixed bag there, obviously.
at one point one of the authors was thinking through different applications of human cloning, specifically around, like, we can't grow these children in a lab, they would need a womb, and of course they would be bound by time to grow, develop, etc., and even then we don't know what sorts of diseases or illnesses they'd be more prone to given that tampering with dna always comes with a cost. anyway.
at one point he was like (paraphrased), i do wonder what sort of person would feel compelled to take genetic material of his lover (it would always be a clone of the mother; you cannot make a perfect clone of the father, as there wouldn't be one) and raise that child as his own, knowing the intimate details that he does. and of course how would this child come to understand her place in the world, how would she view her father and mother, what could we reasonably expect from a perfect clone. all sorts of questions.
it shook me to my core so bad because gendo really was an entire fucking freak. ritsuko was a freak. everyone was freaky for that. shinji had the only reasonable reaction to rei immediately after that discovery -- tragic for rei, tragic for shinji, horrifying and morally bankrupt for everyone involved. SHOOK! imagine sitting the entire american bioethics commission post-Dolly and being like, 'i have to show you something right now.'
