Castle Market in Sheffield was a brilliant structure that housed everything from offices and shops to multiple floors of market stalls and cafes. Designed by Andrew Darbyshire, it was built in stages between 1959 and 1965.

You could get anything you needed there and it was a popular meeting place for working class people. Musician Jarvis Cooker had his first job there, working at a fish stall.

Change in people’s shopping habits and city's push for redevelopment of the area led to closure of the building in 2013. A listing application was refused and the whole structure was demolished two years later. The site is still empty, waiting to be turned into a park next year.

I based my illustration on a plethora of historical photographs, to get the original details right. Some of the initial tenants were National Provincial Bank, Sheffield Corporation Waterworks, Tylers, Bunneys..
