“You do?” She turned to face him at the sound of Paco’s voice. She grinned, happy that the other was thinking about her. “What is it?”

Julchen grinned as she nuzzled and snuggled the kitten who was playfully batting at her face. “A very cute name for a very cute kitten~” She cooed at it, most of her attention now on the kitten. A small yellow bird, who was usually seen around Julchen, was watching jealously, ruffling up it’s feathers and fidgeting. 

Paco only smiled and nodded, watching contentedly as Julchen bonded with her new friend. Glancing at the rather ruffled bird though, he couldn’t help but laugh. “Ay, but I think your other little friend is starting to get jealous, amiga! Look how he puffs up!”

“I know I brought home six kittens but listen”

“Woah woah- I’m not judging here.” Abel began, hands up in the air halfheartedly in defense, “I just want three of them, they’re adorable.”

What? The Demon had a soft spot for cute fluffy things. Kittens were cute and so they made it onto his list of “things to protect because they’re too damn adorable”. In fact, that list was mostly comprised of animals, with only a few exceptions that had been humans.

A pause, “where did you find them anyway?”

Abel nodded, huffing lightly, “yup, just tell me what you need, and I’ll be alright with getting it for you.”

Seeing the other act a little brighter cause something to stir in Abel, and he found himself feeling a little elated at the sight. Shoulders were a little less heavy for a second, and he added, “I mean…if it’ll make you happy, I guess I really don’t mind.”

Paco paused, placing a hand on his chin as he hummed in thought to remember the recipe. “Well, I need some white rice, and... milk, of course! Ah, and vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar. That is it!” He smiled widely up at Abel. “Muchas gracias, señor, muchas gracias. It has been very long since I was able to last have horchata, so sharing it with you will make me very happy!”

“You’re positive….? Really, it’s alright if you don’t. I’m fine on my own,” Ludwig frowned, brows drawing together. In all honesty, he was craving human contact since for the short time he’d been here he’d felt nothing but loneliness, but he didn’t wish to bother the other circus members. Perhaps, this was what happened when you left everything you’d ever known. Still. There was no point in moping. He’d made his bed, and now he’d have to lie in it.

Ludwig paused as he considered this response. He had assumed because of their powers it would’ve made survival easier, but this made more sense. Difference was always frowned upon by society. That much was for certain.

“That’s a shame that this is the only place, but at least…. at least there’s somewhere?”

Paco nodded with a bit of a melancholic smile. “Sí... at least they have a place to go. Though if only it were a kinder place. But, that is why I try to be friends with them all! Everyone here deserves a bit of kindness, sí? Especially the ones who have been here many years. I can tell-- they hurt inside.”

Abel blinked, then simply let out a sharp, “oh.” Well, at least Paco hadn’t named his pussy after a whore. That would have been quite a story Abel would have needed explaining - after he recovered from shock, of course, as Abel was more than certain something as dirty as that probably wouldn’t cross Paco’s mind at all. His soul, it was too pure. Pure enough to almost wound the demon.

“I can…get you the stuff to make it…if you wanted…” he offered, slowly, hoping to appear helpful, but not too helpful.

Paco with his pure soul was much too busy thinking about how delicious his mother’s homemade horchata is, and how he probably could get the recipe right if he tried enough, to even realize what Abel had been confused about in the beginning.

But the offer had him perking up slightly. “Oh? You could? If you could, that would be amazing! And I would happily make some for you as well!”

Ludwig, who had always been one for taking things apart and picking through the pieces in an attempt to understand, could sympathize with Paco, but personally he would be continuing to wonder. Perhaps if he could find a way to tactfully ask how and why he would.

“That’s reasonable. It does make me wonder why they joined the circus of all things.”

“Perhaps it is because there is no where else for them to go.” Paco’s expression softened slightly. “They are not like the rest of us-- I cannot begin to imagine how hard it must be to live like that, in a world that is already so judgmental. This might be the only place they can exist as they are and not fear being turned away.”

“Oh– Of course,” Ludwig didn’t think he really doubted that Paco wasn’t telling the truth, but it was a little alarming to hear things like this spoken of so casually. He’d expected oddities when joining something like the circus, but demons? Tiger boys? Well, this was slightly more than he’d expected.

“That’s interesting,” Very intelligent response, Beilschmidt. He cleared his throat, attempting a second go, “Er, so, how did that come to be? As in– How did they become like that? Or are they just… born?”

Paco gave a little shrug. “I do not know, really! I have never thought to ask. It is simply who they are! And well...” He laughed softly and rubbed the back of his neck. “Even if they did explain, I do not think I would be able to completely understand. It is easier for me to just accept that that is how it is instead of trying to understand why it is.”

“Whore what?” Abel asked, looking a little dumbfounded for but a mere second, before allowing his features to slacken into a frown. His usual look, of course.

“I have no idea what you’re on about, Paco…” he raised an eyebrow, keeping a chuckle to himself.

“No, no! Horchata!” Paco repeated with a laugh. “It is a type of sweet drink with milk and cinnamon, and my little Horchata is white but has a few brown speckles on her fur, so I thought he looked like horchata!” He chuckled again, smiling. “It is a very good drink, if I had what I needed to make it, I would.”

Oliver’s head whipped around to peer up at the other, smile brightening his features, “Paco! Hello~”

At the mention of a surprise, he grew giddy, clapping his hands together, “a surprise? Ooh ooh! Should I close my eyes?” He let a giggle pass his lips.

There was a slight pause from Oliver, before a calm look settled on his features, “I think I should go get this little one settled in her new home, and I don’t want to keep you for too long- I know I can chat on for far too long-” he gave a nervous laugh.

Smiling, Paco patted Oliver’s shoulder again. “Ay, no need to worry, I am always happy to chat with you! But sí, you ought to take the little one back to your tent. She will need time to get used to it all, I think. But I think you will also do just fine!”

Ludwig seemed a bit apprehensive after hearing Francisco’s response. A man who punished unfairly was one matter. One who appeared to possess magical abilities was another. There had to be a plausible explanation for this. Magic was not… real. Mostly. Probably.

“…Not the only one?”

Paco nodded, seeming to grow quite fascinated as he spoke. “Sí! There are many here who possess abilities that are hard to understand! My good friend, Julchen-- she can talk to spirits and summon creatures! And one of our fire dancers creates fire from thin air. At least two performers I have met transform into some demonic form, and I even saw a little boy turn into a tiger!” He chuckled slightly. “It is all a bit of a shock at first, but they are all very wonderful people. Do not be afraid of their differences. They are some of the strongest minded here.”

“Oh, Paco, you’re so sweet!” She came closer to give him a hug, though careful not to squish the kitten between them. “Then she looked back at the kitten, holding it close to her face. “Süßes Kätzchen, what should I call you?” She thought about it for a few moments. “Blühen?” She said out loud and paused again in thought “Yeah, I like that. I’ll call him Blü for short.”

Francisco returned the hug, being sure to mind the kitten. “Ay, it is only because you are such a good friend, and I knew you could look after el pequiñito.” He pulled away with a smile. “Bluhen? Blühen? Ay, that is a very cute name.” He laughed at his own stumbled attempts to pronounce the kitty’s new name.

Cutely? Pffft… okay, Abel could live with that. He wasn’t exactly donning the whole evil demon from Hell look right then.

“Say, I haven’t a clue what to name him…” Abel murmured, “I never had a pet before.” His first thought was to call him Sardine, simply for comedic value; he was a cat, sardine was a fish? No? Abel thought it would have been funny, but then again, this little kitty deserved a good, strong name.

“Want to help me?”

Leave it to Paco to describe an actual demon from Hell as cute. But it was the truth at the moment. Seeing the usually gruff and grumpy Abel coddling and cooing at a kitten was just about as cute as it could get, and it filled Paco with endless amusement.

“Ah, yes he does need a name! Hm...” He paused in thought. “Well, I am not so good at names. I named my kitten Horchata because he looks like horchata!” he laughed, not even stopping to think that the other might not know what he’s talking about at all.
