A bit of a rant

So tonight I went to see a production of Much Ado that my department just opened. The woman sitting next to my girlfriend opened her playbill, glanced at the page with the names of everyone in the production and design department, and said “Oh I bet these are the people that didn’t make it into the play.”

Can we PLEASE destroy the stereotype that all designers and technicians are failed actors? Can people consider that we do this because we love it and not as a consolation prize? I am very proud of the work I do and I respect actors for the work that they do.

All I ask is that we appreciate everyone for their hard work.

I think the thing that strikes me most about working in technical theatre is that the show always happens. No matter how bad things seem in the weeks, days, even hours before opening, the show will still open. Issues are usually solved just in time and that satisfaction is really addicting.
