Language and the way we think
I learnt last week that the English language brings ideas in the following way:
from A - to B, from B - to C. The links bring you and makes the unknown become known along the way as you read.
Whereas Mandarin (and Latin American languages, apparently), is the following:
A - B - C - D. It is on the responsibility of the reader to figure out the unknown, rather than the author to introduce the unknown to you.
Made me realise the logic of language, and how I think in a certain language. Also made me re-think my strategy for learning Mandarin - which I have never really pondered upon before.

Just came out of the lift at my block. Caucasian parents (though the mother looks like she’s of mixed blood but she has green eyes) speaking to their blonde daughter in Mandarin. Perfect accent and grammatically correct. So ashamed.
刚才我从电梯出来有一家外国人。爸妈跟孩子说正确的汉语。我感觉得真丢脸。世界各地的人都学汉语。我当华人得还有面子吗?
And so I posted what I wrote below on lang-8.com and the responses have been pretty amazing and overwhelming:
So.. which correction is the right one?
刚才我从电梯出来时遇到一家子外国人。
遇到 Yù dào bump into
白人爸妈 (尽管母亲看起来像混血但有着绿色的眼睛) 正跟金发女儿说汉语。发音完美,语法正。
尽管 Jǐnguǎn Although
混血 Hùnxiě Mixed blood
发音 Fāyīn Pronunciation
语法正 Yǔfǎ zhèng (Google translates it as syntax positive but I think 正 indicates something that is closer to the meaning of perfect).
我感觉很惭愧.
惭愧 Cánkuì Ashamed
世界各地的人都在学汉语. 我作为一个华人颜面何在?
颜面何在 Yánmiàn hézài I guess it literally means, where do I put my face
"ZAI"
再 Zài Again/ Once more vs.在 Zài At/ In/ Be

Ellen tries to speak Mandarin to the adorable Zony and Yony.
lang-8.com is well known amongst intermediate/advanced language learners who are self-taught, but I thought I’d explain it for beginners. It is an amazingly useful site where you can blog or upload any text you’ve written in the language you’re learning. Many people use it as a diary, though I’ve seen people check essays and business emails there too.
Once the text is uploaded native speakers of the language will check it for you. You return the favour by checking pieces of work written in your native language and correcting them. In this way everyone gets their work marked by a native speaker (often more than one person contributes so you can get several opinions too).
It is massively helpful in improving all aspects of writing, but natural usage in particular (notoriously difficult for self learners to pick up when they are not in a native environment).
Oh wow!
Which "DE" article?
<Sorry this is such a late post! Wanted to do this last week. But I settled a time table to study for Mandarin this summer at least and pretty much decided on my HSK date.>
I always get confused by the use of 的,得 and 地 and so decided to recap about it by doing a little Google search. Found some useful websites that explain when to use which "DE".
Beginning with 的,
我的书, 你的猫, 他的包
的 acts almost like the equivalent of the possessive apostrophe S in the English language by indicating who possesses what. At the same time, it is not only indicative of someone owning or having something, but something having certain descriptive properties.
红色的笔, 浅蓝色的云, 他的女儿是个很漂亮的女孩子
得
The website that I found describes it as a direction, potential, degree and result complement. To be honest, I still don't really understand what exactly is a complement linguistically, but 得 is always used after a verb.
买了怎么多地菜,吃得完吗?
怎么晚了,票还买得到吗?
地
I personally find this the most confusing because I would read it as "DI" if I come across this character because that I was what I learnt it as, to mean land (地方 place,地板 floorboard,地球 globe/ earth).
However, it is usually used after an adjective. Differing from 的, which allocates an attribute to an item or a person (and hence may come after an adjective), it does not describe a person or item per se, but more like the attribute. Easiest way is to regard it as a character to transform descriptive words into adverbs.
他慢慢地吃,他很无奈地等,我们的国家队轻松地赢了金牌
Having said that, I am not wondering which of the following is correct. For me I always assumed it was a matter of which we want to emphasise on in a sentence but now I am not too sure any more...
他很快地吃 vs 他吃得很快

Lake District
This morning, I struggled quite badly in trying to explain to my mother where exactly I will be heading to this week. Lake District - how do you say it in Mandarin? At the same time I refused to mix Mandarin with English - I cringe every time I hear that. I admit I still have a bad habit of littering my Mandarin with “and then” because in Mandarin it somehow sounds weird to continue your sentences with 和 and 也是.
And so,
Lake District - 大湖区 da4 hu1 qü2 Nature reserve - 自然保护区 zi4 ran1 bao3 hu4 qü2
我这个新期会去大湖区。大湖区是个自然保护区。希望太阳公公把山上和湖晒得亮起来! 让我拍漂漂亮亮的照片。
I probably should revise the differences between 的, 得, and 地 tomorrow. And I guess this week’s vocabulary theme shall be nature.
